Spring Break Baseball
#1
Some of you baseball guys fill me in, why do teams travel to FL and SC and not play teams away from KY. I have been watching scores to see how Kentucky stacks up against other teams from other states. Most have travel 9-12 hours to play a team that is located an hour from them in Kentucky. I was surprised that very few play more than 1 team that is not from KY. Why spend that kind of money and not play someone else. To me doesn't make sense. Fill me in why?

If you get a good answer on that one, let me know. Lol. I've wondered the same thing. If I'm driving 8-12 hours to play out of state, I would want to play really good out of state teams. Wins and losses mean nothing on those trips, so why not play the best teams you can, and the best pitching you can see, that way it makes coming back and playing local teams seem a lot easier. It's not like KY can't compete with other states. There are a lot of kids get drafted from the state of KY every year. I remember researching it a few years back, and KY was only behind California, Florida, Texas, and one other state. (can't remember.) in terms of players in the majors.

I agree! Never did understand going to these places to play and not face teams from other states. I like the idea of playing in these places for the facilities but it would be more beneficial to actually play out of state competition.

It all depends on the teams that show up to play in that area. Not all school districts have spring break at the same time, last year LC played no teams from ky, this year 4 out 5 are from ky.

I know that this takes preparation to go, so why not schedule local teams there when you make the schedule.

Well if you look at LC's spring schedule, you'll notice these KY teams:

Murray: 6 hours from Louisa
Paducah Tilghman: 6 hours from Louisa
Marshall County: 6.5 hours from Louisa
Russell County: 3.5 hours from Louisa
Monticello (VA): 5 hours from Louisa

So, yes we are traveling to Myrtle Beach and playing KY schools. But the time it takes to get to Myrtle Beach is just about 1-2 hours longer than what it would take to get to FOUR of the five teams LC is playing. So why not go to the beach and get away and have some fun? It's not like LC is playing teams in their own backyard down there.

Amen , I've said it for years it's nothing but a waste of money. For the reason they don't play Florida, and South Carolina schools are in a different league than most Kentucky schools.

You guys could have saved all the money, you could have stayed home and they could have stopped on the way there.

First off, do you even know where Louisa, KY is located?

Secondly, I highly doubt that the route these teams take would be along US 23 from Ashland....Confusednicker:

Thirdly, be kind of hard to play ALL these teams in ONE time slot. Since they all leave and arrive around the same time in Myrtle.

Football and basketball teams travel and spend $$$ in the summer to go to their "camp", and nothing is said. Baseball does it to play teams that they wouldn't normally play and people are up in arms about it......:HitWall: Very frustrating.

I have no problem traveling and playing at all. To me makes little sense traveling that far and playing KY teams, I don't care how far they are from you. JMO, if I were to go, I would schedule teams that were not from KY. maybe local teams or tell the Cal facilities to schedule other teams. Just an opinion, no need to get defensive.

It's a big investment, but in my opinion, the competition you play is not the most important thing to consider.
1. Weather / Temperatures are more than likely going to be better for baseball whether you go to FL, SC, or GA
2. Unlimited time with your players for individual practices, meetings, personal evaluation
3. Unlimited jv/freshman games
4. Chemistry. Kids jelling together and becoming a "team". Getting to see each other outside of the classroom, bus, or ball field.
5. Responsibility. Kids have to keep up with and wear the correct jersey, caps, belt, cleats, socks, etc. Be on time to meetings, practices, games, etc. Possibly for the first time without assistance from a relative.

Great points, I agree 100%, now just top it off with games from teams with other states?

Florida- 25 game limit. 4/16 last regular season contest
South Carolina - 16 game limit*, 4/28 playoffs start
*+ two tournaments that can combine for a maximum of 10 games
or 18 games + 1 tournament

Florida and S. Carolina's regular season is winding down. I'm sure they are making up missed conference games in early April. Also, they are not allowed to play in as many games as Kentucky (36).

I hear Johnson Central played a local team and the score was 19 - 1. This may be a fluke but I think those that travel from Kentucky can play with just about any team in the US!!!! But baseball is a funny game, one game doesn't make a definitive decision on how good or bad a team really is. That's why they play "series" I guess!!!!!

My kid has been going since he was in 7th grade, and he looks forward to it every year, if a team is fortunate enough to win a region it is s great preparer for the state tournament as far as staying in team hotels, team meals, and multiple games in a row. LC will play 5 games in 5 days a couple of times a year, and 3 games in 2 days 2 or 3 times a year. Just to get ready for district and regional tournament play.

LC seems to be playing very well at this time.
