Ok My Brothers and Sisters in Maroon....This kindve a controversial issue amongst the faithful. The 1955 Panther Football team went undefeated. I've heard varying stories oh how they were crowned. There were no playoffs then. I've heard it was based on votes from media and I've also heard it was based on the Lit ratings. Maybe it was a combination of the 2. On that I'm not sure. What I do know is they beat everyone put in front of them. There are some even in the alumni who don't want to count this as a State Title in our teams history because it was annointed on them rather than won in post season. While I see some validity in that. My argument is this. The players and coaches on that team did everything they were supposed to do. Is it their fault there was no postseason? Also, if places like Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Penn State recognize NATIONAL TITLES awarded to them by sports writers.....What makes us any better that we can't? Thoughts?

The only thing I have seen from 1955 is that Corbin was at the top spot for the entire state in 1955 (Same poll had St. X in one of the years right around that, so it was a state wide poll). Pikeville did go 11-0 and win their conference, but I have yet to see any type of poll where they were either listed ahead of Corbin or would be in a different classification than Corbin. I am sure there is some sort of merit out there, because it didn't just come out of thin air, but I would like to see confirmation.

Prior to the 1959 playoffs I don't believe there were Classes in the State. Since there was no playoff, why would there be?
I too had seen the Corbin teamed crowned as such. I would dig in newspaper archives to get confirmation before "claiming" it as a title.

We talked about this back in the summer during the Belfry/Corbin talk EKU and I were having.
Corbin claims the 1955 State championship. Its even on the wall of there stadiums. Don't know how much water it holds as the KHSAA wasn't formed until 1959 or so.

23 state titles; St. X claims 13, including the 1955 and â56 poll crowns before the Kentucky High School Athletic Association implemented playoffs. Trinity leads the series 38-37-2.

The Louisville Catholic School rivalry game between the nationally ranked Trinity Shamrocks (#51 in Dallas Jacksonâs HSFB100 and 2011 National Champions) and the St. Xavier Tigers will be presented by the United States Marine Corps and played on Friday, October 2 at the University of Louisvilleâs Papa Johnâs Stadium. This annual rivalry game typically draws the biggest crowds of any high school event in the country. This rivalry got its start in 1956 and the game is so ingrained in the cityâs Catholic culture that families schedule events to not conflict with the game. This game is promoted by the schools as the most-attended annual regular-season high school football game in the country, typically drawing over 35,000 fans. The two all-male schools of about 1,400 students each dominate state football. Trinity has won 23 state titles; St. X claims 13, including the 1955 and â56 poll crowns before the Kentucky High School Athletic Association implemented playoffs. Trinity leads the series 38-37-2. Going into the 2014 game, Trinity had won 7 times in a row, but the Tigers downed them 35-21 to break that streak.

Very possible there was a split between sports writers and Lit rankings. Happened quite a bit in college ball between the AP and Coaches Poll back in the day.
1990-Colorado/ Georgia Tech
1991-Washington/Miami
1997-Nebraska/ Michigan
Heck even LSU/USC split during the BCS era. All those teams hang banners for those titles. Again I will agree the system was flawed, but why punish the team for that?

Seems that several teams each year claimed state titles before 1959, I would say it's due differant sport writers in the differant regions of the state

Check the AP Polls if you can get them.

Should've asked PHSForever. He was there.

Fans from Pikeville, I would not want to join the Ashland Tomcats as they lay claim to titles from the infancy of the 20th century. I would stick with 4 and an asterisk for '55:1::1:

But if the shoe was on the other foot Belfry would have been screaming bloody murder, claimed the '55 title and hung banners in a heartbeat.:truestory:

Let be ultra clear when I say this lol. If I want accurate facts about HS Football, Kentucky Sports Radio is not going to be my source.
No one is being done unfairly. I would rather be on the side of not claiming something that may be ours than on the side of claiming something that may not be ours. Obviously it is not outright if we have at least THREE claiming the same one.
The 1955 team was an undefeated team, won their conference, and all true Panthers fans know that it is one of the school's best. Anything other than that is great, but I just want to be accurate rather than prideful.
BUT, this is all just MY opinion. I do not speak for the school and if it is claimed, it is claimed. Just stating my viewpoint.

Yea I was talking solely about the playoffs that wasnt around.
This is why the need for playoffs became abundantly clear. It's the only way to get a true champion.
