Who wins? For me It's a toss up. But if Birds play some kids both ways. I'll lean a little towards Highlands

It is a human trait to not like those who usually excel. Both gave Class 4A in the eastern half of the Commonwealth credibility. With both gone, there is little or no credibility in that area. Maybe Johnson Central can step up. We'll see. Obviously, it won't be Rowan County, Boyd County, or Ashland.

It's going to be Highlands, again. Their comeback will come to a screeching halt next week, but not before they dispatch their rival.

It's Highlands!
They simply find a way to beat covcath on a regular basis more times than not. Tip of the cap to their youth football league, coaches, and kids.
Don't get too comfortable though bird fans. Coach Eviston will adapt and tip the scales more than his predecessors. He's a proven winner...expect less time between covcath victories down the road! Folks have been used to long stretches between colonel wins.
The birds win this one 34-28!

Bo, I agree with your thoughts. After watching the first game, I thought CovCath was a little better than the Birds. Turnovers (particularly the interceptions by CovCath in the 4th quarter) really helped the Birds. Frankly, I thought CovCath went away from the run when it wasn't necessary.
Having the game at David Cecil Memorial will help the Birds a little. Even if you've played there before, it's a difficult place for visitors to play. Has Eviston ever coached a game at Highlands before? If not, it will be something he has to adjust to.
I have been pleasantly surprised by the Birds improvement running the ball as of late. Course we don't know if we've really improved that much or if the recent opponents' run defense hasn't been as stout as what we faced early in the season.
If we can run the ball with some success so Hergott doesn't have to pass the ball 20+ times, I think we should be okay.

Despite the exaggerations of Highlands' demise here they are one win away from the State Semi's once more

I am going with Covington Catholic because they have nothing to lose, they are the underdog, and they are probably more talented. Covington Catholic will win another game in this series, and this game will be the best shot the Colonels have had in a long time. Hopefully, the Colonels' coaching staff knows how to play the Rodney Dangerfield card effectively.

Cov Cath outplayed HHS first go around but mistakes allowed the Birds to pull off the win. HHS is playing better now than early in the year but I am sure Cov Cath is too. HHS home field advantage will be big. On Def. the Birds are playing better, tackling better and DB's are playing better. Off. is running better but still not much of a passing game (poor throws by QB and lots of drops by WR's as well as they are not aggressive going after the ball). I think the game comes down to which team can slow up the running game since both show little of a passing game. I think this will be a close game that comes down to plays made in the 4th. I take HHS in a battle.

It would not surprise me a bit to see Highlands win another state championship. Highlands 27 Covington Catholic 13.

PC better not right off HHS/CCH winner as an easy game to get to the championship!

Hilarious that they even need to considering they have, what, over 100 kids?
It's looking more and more like it was just all Dale bringing them success.

I know they have numbers. Numbers aren't athletes. I can have 100 in a marching band. But if 80% can't play an instrument. Oh well.

But it's much more likely to have athletes if you have over a hundred to choose from, especially when they have such a large feeder program.
You can say what you did about any school, and schools with a lot less numbers on the team still have success.

CovCath outplayed Highlands the first time? What the heck? CovCath brings their home field with them? What the heck? Who in the heck has 100 kids on their roster? I am betting that CovCath's roster is just as big as the roster of HHS. 50 kids, 70 kids, 100 kids does not mean you have enough athletes to 2-platoon. Heck CovCath has several kids playing on both sides of the ball do they not?
Pretty sure this game will be just like the last how many years in that it will be a close hard fought game that is won by the team that makes the fewest mistakes.

Pretty sure Highlands has about 97 players(?), and CovCath has something like 74(?), and simple logic tells you that having more players gives you a better chance to have enough quality to two-platoon, which we're not even talking about two-platooning, but rather just enough players to have quality units so players don't have to play both ways.
If you're saying that it's ok for Highlands to play kids both ways because CovCath does, then you're already admitting that they're not as dominant as they used to be.
This game wasn't traditionally won by the team that made the fewest mistakes because Highlands had enough players to play uptempo the entire game and the opposing team couldn't keep up with them, even if they did make mistakes.

These two comments shows me you really do not follow or know much about HHS football. Cov Cath has not been bringing much of a student section to the Highlands games and even if they do the tight atmosphere at HHS field is different than any other HS field in KY.
Have you watched any HHS games over the last 5 years and this year. To make a comment like it is coaching that is the reason they are struggling this year shows you know nothing about this team. The talent is way down (like everyone close to program knew it was going to be for several years) and while this coach may be slight bit below Dale's talent, he is still a very good coach and can only do so much with the talent that is there. QB play is down, WR play is way down, and RB play is down. You have a big drop in talent at all skilled positions yet you want to blame the coach. This team has a chance to get by Cov Cath to make it to the semi final game; if they do they would be underdogs but could very well win the game on their home field and advance to championship game. This team making in to the quarter finals or farther is a sign of a good coach with the talent that this team has, and it also shows how weak 5A and the watered down 6 class system in KY is. The talent level on this HHS team is way below any team at HHS in a long, long time whether you want to admit it or not!.

Just read in another thread that you are a Cov Cath alumni, that helps explain a lot of your negative comments aimed at HHS program and their fans.

Or it's just reading the writing on the wall and laughing at how their fans base their entire lives on Highlands football and use that as a big measure in their own lives for success.
As far as the posts about the talent level being down, like I said, they have way more to choose from and have been prepping these kids since grade school so there is never a drop-off in talent, which is something their fans have always prided themselves on.

Drop off on talent is the excuse that will be used every time they don't win state. They are the Gods of Ky football. I know. I played there. Everyone hated us. And was very excited when we happen to have a bad game and get beat. We only had a few exceptional athletes on the teams I played on. But we still won. Our coaching staff made them believe they were actually better than they were. Now that's coaching. And the playoffs weren't a CAKE walk. Only 3 games to win state. We might play a team like Simon Kenton. Then a team like Pulaski Co. And then Bowling Green.
