Shelby Valley 61 - Bell County 58 (OT)
#1
I heard the score from a pretty reliable source..I do know Valley won for sure though..Way to go Wildcats!!
#2
So does this make Valley #2 in the WYMT Mountain top 10 behind South Laurel???
#3
I'm very proud of the Cats! This should earn them the respect they have been looking for!

Can't wait to see the outcome of the WYMT tournament coming up next week. Should be interesting-- let's bring home another 1st place trophy..
Congrats boys!!!

Shelby Valley goes to 11-0 and this should silence some of the non-believers. This team is the real deal.
#5
I've said it all year and will say it again right after Alfus, Shelby Valley is the real deal folks, believe it or not, they are now the #2 team in the mountains, and the next team they play is Hazard, who is possibly, after their loss, dropping to #5 in the mountains.

Do they play East Ridge at home sometime this week before heading to the WYMT?
#7
Well, now that I think about it, they do, and unless they get the big head, it will be an easy win.

January 5th at 7:30. Shelby Valley vs. East Ridge, game is at Valley.
#9
Way to go CATS!

Congrats to Shelby Valley on the big win. Now you start to get some respect from playing good teams instead of cupcakes.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It is the size of the fight in the dog.

The big kid from Bell is the best athlete in the mountains. He had a nasty one step reverse two handed sland. In warmups he did a smoothe 360 and the Harold Minor special. He dunks like it is simple. He has signed to play footballfor Auburn, so that should give an idea what kind of athlete this kid is. Valley was down 34-21 at the half and could have quit. Bell County is a very very good basketball team. Early in the 3rd quarter Jake Bryant and Ashley Hatfield picked up their 4th fouls, but somehow SV cut deep into the lead. Elisha Justice was absolutely huge with 13 points, and two clutch free throws in OT to give Valley the final 3 point lead with 20 seconds remaining. I am more and more impressed with this young team. Believe me Bell County is the real deal.

This was an exciting game to watch with a regional tournament atmosphere. The fans for both sides were absolutely wild. I think everyone for Valley, especially the coaches, are proud of the fight the boys put up tonight. It would have been easy for a young team like this one to fold the tent when everything was going badly. Down 13 at the half, and in foul trouble they clawed their way back into the game. As Larry Legend said, Hatfield and Jacob Bryant each picked up their 4th foul early in the 3rd, but the bench got them back into the game. The steady play of Elisha Justice and the inside passing game of Taylor Newsome to Kyle Goodson turned this game around. This game was definitely the tale of two halves. Valley outscored Bell 40-24 in the 2nd half and overtime. Jeremy Jackson hit a huge baseline jumper with around 10 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime, and Elisha Justice sealed the win in OT with 2 HUGE free throws with 24 seconds left. Great job boys. You showed the whole community a lot tonight. You have tons of heart and it is a joy to watch you boys play.

Taylor Newsome, Jacob Bryant, Kyle Goodson, and Jeremy Jackson made the All Tournament team, along with MVP Elisha Justice.

The Slusher kid for Bell County is a beast inside. Very strong kid and a great leaper.

The scoring for Valley was as follows:

Elisha Justice 13
Jacob Bryant 12
Ashley Hatfield 9
Kyle Goodson 9
Jeremy Jackson 7
Logan Bryant 6
Taylor Newsome 3
Jonah Justice 2

WOW..congrats to the Wildcats, now people will give them the respect that they deserve. So Valley won the tournament
#14
Whose talking now about Valley..NOBODY! This team has great guard play and players are stepping up when they need it! Skies the Limit for this Valley team! AND THEY ARE YOUNG!!!!
#15
After thinking about Shelby Valley's schedule I've come to this conclusion. They have a young team which needs confidence and the schedule has give them that confidence. I've been outspoken about the weak schedule but with a young team they need confidence more than tough competition. Look out for the Wildcats!!! Please get in the Paintsville Hoops classic next season!!!

This game proves two things IMO: First it shows that SV is not 4th in the state because Bell Co. isn't a top team in the state and they clearly played ahead of SV with SV coming from behind and finding a way to win (which shows SV has determination). Second it shows that SV CAN play against the so called "non-cupcake" teams. But getting by Corbin and beating Bell Co. in OT doesn't make SV world beaters by any means.

I don't mean to take anything away from SV (and while IMO they aren't the best in the 15th they could still win it), but they have not played anyone that is great, and the two only competitively decent teams they have played in KY they barely won.

So keeping it in perspective, I congratulate SV on their great season so far, but they won't get the respect they need until they keep winning against the more competitive teams. They could be the Harlem Globetrotters, BUT they haven't proven themselves yet.

I'm in no way bashing SV, but just putting a reality check on some of the SV posters who suddenly think that being 11-0 and beating Bell Co. in OT makes SV the top team in the Mountains or in the State! SV is a long way from having proven that at this point.

Congrats Valley

i saw valley play against powell in the preseason, they beat powell, and in easy fashion, but they will loose to bell county again, they will loose to them in the region. it will be exciting but i dont see valley makin all that noise, remember its a marathon, not a sprint.
#20
Valley may not be #4 in the state but at this point I would put them in the top 20 somewhere probabily between 17-20. I know they haven't played anyone besides Bell but they have beaten some teams with descent players BAD, example PBurg by 66, and PBurg has some player who can play...JMO

Valley is not a top 10 team in the state. But most definately should be in the top 20 like Moe said, in the range of 15-20...They have proven themselves against decent teams, and blew them out of the water, they deserve some respect, I mean heck, they're starting 3 Freshmen. They have 5 players that all see LOTS of playing time that will eb returning next year, be ready 15th region, Valley is a powerhouse again.

congrats Valley..way to get some respect

I would just like to know how you can say that they arent the best team in the region at this point? What has Paintsville do that is so great, I mean they played some good teams tough, but they lost. Bell County is 15-20 points better than the Paintsville team I saw at Pikeville... If SV beat UK you would say that all it proves is that UK isn't very good and SV hasn't proved anything. Bell was 2 in the mountains. Am I saying SV should be ranked above South Laurel, no way, should they be #4 in the state, no way. Should they be top 20 most definitely. I would just love to know who in this region has proved more than SV?
Paintsville has wins over Magoffin, Pikeville, and Lawrence. These are good wins but they are not Bell County.

Very true, Valley could beat Huntington and USC would probably turn down OJ's scholarship cause it shows he is no good, Valley never will get respect, even if they win state, and it's a shame to see because our boys play good competition and they are the top team in the 15th region right now, and in my opinion, will be in the next ranking of the top 20 in the state.

WOW! Good job Valley!! Came in and won my teams tourney! Good, scrappy team you got there!

Maybe next year, but no way this year is SV a top 20 team. Who are the decent teams that they have played??? Name one!!

They may very well win the 15th even though I don't personally think that they will, but even that accomplishment wouldn't make them a top 20 team in the state. There are at least 5-6 teams in the 15th that could knock them off on a given night and we have one of the weakest regions in the state. Wishful thinking. And this is not meant to be taken as putting down SV which has loads of talent, it is just reality!

Congrats Valley. Good to see you get a win over a good team.

However, I'm holding out on 15th region rankings for now. This is a long season, and there is much that will take place between now and March.

Pulling for my Tigers! I would LOVE a rematch. PHS lacks some of the pettiness that upset them last year. Not that Kevin Williams was a "disrupter" or troublemaker - he was nothing of the sort - but I think having Van has mellowed everyone out and let them develop some chemistry. They have evened out their scoring when Slone has an off night and they are deep on the bench. Van is well liked by all his team mates and unlike Pugh or Williams, he brings something to the team that "gels" them. Glad to see it and hope to see SV in the 15th finals. It's been a long time since I went to Rupp!

That post is rediculous!! No way is Bell Co. 15-20 points better than Paintsville. Just tell us what Bell County has done this year??? They have played a very weak schedule. Who have they beat that is considered a good team and who have they played tough that is considered a good team (SV excluded)? No one! Paintsville may lose to SV (anything can happen in a game) but Paintsville has played several teams close that are a lot better than SV or Bell County. That doesn't mean that Paintsville will win the region, it doesn't mean that SV won't, and it doesn't mean that Paintsville would even beat SV if they played right now. But it is fact at this point! WHEN SV beats a top quality team, I will be the first to give them credit. But I give no credit when credit is not due. If you look at SV results this year, the games are starting to get closer as the competition gets better, and Corbin and Bell County are not by any means top teams. Bell Co. wouldn't be the clear favorite in the 15th Region if they were in it and we are a weak region.

musr have been a great game
