The closest school in distance that your team doesn't play
#1
Not that it matters..... But JC has teams in our basketball district (57th) and region (15th) that we have never played or haven't played in years.

57th District
Magoffin County - 2002
Paintsville - 2008 (closest to JC)
Sheldon Clark - 2010

15th Region
Allen Central - Never Played
South Floyd - Never Played
Phelps - Never Played
East Ridge - Never Played
Pikeville - 1977
Betsy Layne - 1989
Prestonsburg - 1992
Shelby Valley - 1996
Pike County Central - 1998
Lawrence County - 2006
Belfry - In a current contract, 2014.

The only other County that borders Johnson is Morgan.
JC last played Morgan County in 1998.

Yes.... I KNOW THIS IS NOT THE BASKETBALL FORUM. But for the purpose of this thread, basketball District and Regions are being used to prove my point.

Some of these schools have not had the best football programs and are lucky to field a team some seasons. And I don't want to travel to Phelps or South Floyd to watch JC play a football game either.
I'm sure other schools across the Commonwealth have a similar issue.... just something to think about.

I know we don't play them in football, but we do in basketball and other sports don't we Granny? I never follow anything else so I'm not sure.

Lee county is more like 30-40 miles, could make the case for Claiborne county but I wouldn't throw lee county in there

For some reason I was thinking they were closer must have them confused with Thomas Walker Va. as far as distance goes

I LOVED playing Lee High!! Their band is award winning, and playing over there was a lot like going through a time warp for me. It reminded me of what football used to be, in a way. Their concession stand was chocked full of homemade goodies, and the entire field was decorated with crepe paper. It was my favorite place to visit!!

We only play them in basketball, I believe.

I enjoyed Lee Co as well..

McCracken doesn't play Murray High, Marshall Co. , Graves Co, Calloway Co. Graves Co. and /or Murray High would be good gate games as they have good fan bases, but our district schedule hurts us as we are a 5 team district. We also have ambitions of playing on the big 6A stage as times goes by.

FWIW.... The furthest school by actual geographical location.

West: Fulton County
East: Phelps
North: Highlands
South: Fort Campbell (the HS is actually in Tennessee)

According to GoogleMaps..... the distance between Fulton County HS & Phelps HS is 471 miles.

And if I'm wrong, please help me out to get it right.

Yeah Thomas walker is quite a bit closer

Perry Central

Hazard - 2 miles away, not played since 2008, hopefully it stays that way.

Leslie County - ~18 miles away, last played in 2010, would like to see this one restarted, LC has a good program right now.

Knott Central - ~22 miles away, last played in 2010, sure. Put them back on the schedule too.

Clay County - 40 miles away, last played in 2014, i'd like to see this series restarted as well.

Pulaski and Somerset don't play in football anymore. They are 1 mile apart.
#14
Bath County hasn't played Montgomery County in varsity since the 70's and they are 15 miles apart but they did play in freshman this year this season (Bath Co won). Maybe that is the start of something to come as contracts expire. Rowan County is finally back on the schedule (less than 20 miles apart) after only playing them twice over the past 20 years and the crowd was the largest in several seasons.
#15
you got Whitley Co., that hasn't played Williamsburg since like 1987 or something and was beaten by the Jackets I might add.... ahahah, but they are like less than 5 miles from each other. they play every other sport against each other but not in football... Corbin is appr. 15 miles away, last time they played Williamsburg, Jewel almost lost his job in 04, not played against each other since??? Corbin and Williamsburg do play jv games against one another though.. Whitley Middle plays against Williamsburg Middle of recent years.??

I'll play along for my school:

We're in the 59th, so we'll start here....
Shelby Valley - District/Annual Rival
Pikeville - N/A

57th
Paintsville - N/A
Johnson Central - N/A
Sheldon Clark - (Scrimmage in 2015) 2012

58th
Allen Central - 2015
Betsy Layne - 2015
Prestonsburg - 2015
South Floyd - 2015

60th
Pike County Central - 2013
Belfry - 2013
Phelps - 2015
Lawrence County - 2013

Now when I was at Elkhorn City there isn't a team on the list we didn't play or beat.

I've seen those on here post time and time again how JC has a cupcake schedule. IMO, JC shouldn't play any teams listed other than Belfry (cause they can compete) and Paintsville (because the gate sales are huge). JC is a huge school in a small school region.

I know a Sheldon Clark fan will dispute this and rightfully so due to 2009 and 2010 but those are times of old and SC will not see those type teams for many years to come.

Central needs to do 2 year contracts with Northern/Central Ky teams as long as the competition in Eastern Ky remains as is.

Besides Harlan city which is about 3 miles away, we also have Pineville, and middlesboro that we don't play, then on down the road we have corbin. i understand not playing Harlan, Pineville, and maybe even middlesboro although some years middlesboro would be a good game, but i think we should be playing Corbin just because i think people would come out to see that game, then there are schools across the mountain in VA that are close.

Can't remember the last time Russell played Fairview. They are only a few miles apart.

This isn't meant towards one team... I used JC as an example because I know our history.

Raceland and Russell didn't play from 1974-2007 and the districts are so close that kids living on either side of the boundary line can ride the other schools bus. The series restarted from 2007-2012 and will resume this year after a couple of years off.
#22
Russell hasn't played Wheelersburg or Portsmouth in forever either.
#23
Pikeville, well it was until this year. We are playing them for the first time since PCC's inaugural season in 1993.
#24
Russell does not play Fairview. We are about a mile apart as a crow flies.
#25
Would love to see Somerset schedule any of the below/nearby teams in the near future (in order of proximity):

Wayne County (26 miles)
Russell County (31 miles)
Lincoln County (33 miles)
McCreary Central (33 miles)
North Laurel (33 miles)
Casey County (35 miles)
Garrard County (40 miles)
Madison Southern (42 miles)
Corbin (48 miles)
Adair County (50 miles)

Whats that all about? I would love to see them start playing again.

Hazard
Perry Central - 2 miles
Leslie County - 20 miles
Knott County - 25 miles

It would be hard to get all 3 on the schedule at the same time but I'd really like to see them play each other. Hazard plays Breathitt and Letcher just about every year tho. Maybe drop Breathitt for awhile and add Perry Central and drop Somerset every year and add Leslie.
