Thoughts to all the folks in Johnson and surrounding counties!
#1
Terrible flooding up in that neck of the woods. I hope everyone is safe and sound and pray for the ones that have been effected.

We all give each other grief but that has been some terrible weather. I have a lot of good friends up that way.

I've seen some pics on Twitter particular in the Flat Gap area. One pic showed cars that were absolutely destroyed and a house half way submerged in water. I also read 1 person was dead and several more missing. I thoughts are with these people. May they find relief in someway from this tragedy.

The flooding and destruction is INSANE!!!!

1 confirmed dead, 5-12 people reported missing, Coroner J.R. Frisby said cadaver dogs are arriving to assist with recovery efforts ..... only time will tell the number of houses, buildings, cars, roads & churches that have been destroyed. The Red Cross has a disaster shelter set up at the Paintsville Rec. Center. Johnson Central HS and several elementary schools are also set up as shelters.

The Paintsville Utilities department issued a Memo saying they have several lines and transmission stations that have been destroyed. They said that all the reserved water has been released. Several thousand people without power and water.

If I start naming off Fire Departments and Rescue Squads, I'll miss somebody.....
But I do know Floyd, Pike and Morgan county sent Swift Water rescue teams and equipment to help in the rescue efforts.

Every Johnson County Fire-Rescue department was out from about 4pm yesterday and are still out in some form today. With more heavy storms and rain coming later on today, it could be just as bad later on through the night.

The Flat Gap, Red Bush, Keaton areas of Northern Johnson County are the worst hit.
If you are familiar with Johnson County.... that are Routes 172, 201, 1559, 1092, 689.

I've lived in Johnson County all 30 years of my life..... The January 2009 ice storm, the March 2012 tornado and the July 2015 flood are by far the worst natural disasters this county has seen in my life time.

Here is a map of Johnson County.

I've tried to label the surrounding counties and the area that has the RED paint line is the worst hit

Prayers for Johnson and Paintsville area and family.

I'm sure by now most everyone has seen the vid of the house floating down the river, and getting stopped briefly by a bridge, in Johnson County. This is terrible for those folks.

I'm like TopCat....after we nit pick and aggravate each other over sports and the like, the bottom line is we are all in this together and should pray and support these people.

Several of the JC posters on here live in the areas that were hit by the flooding.

A few of them have posted on Facebook they are ok, some have not.

According to the 10am press conference.......

State Police and Johnson County/Paintsville Emergency Management are saying 7 people are 'unaccounted for". But they are stressing that the number is changing by the minute.

All power, internet, land lines and cell towers are down in that area.

1 adult male is confirmed dead. He was not identified in the press conference.

An estimate of 50 rescues were completed yesterday and today.

The incident command post is at the State Highway garage on Rt. 172.

Red Cross has a shelter set up at the Paintsville Rec. Center on Preston Street.

Early rough estimate is that 150+ homes/churches have been destroyed.... not flooded.

3,164 Big Sandy RECC customers are without power. The Volga substation in Flat Gap was destroyed. That substation services 2,200 members.
Paintsville Utilities are still working on restoring their lines and transmission stations. They are expecting that all reserve and reservoirs will be depleted today.

There could be some high water out that way, but nothing like in the Flat Gap area.

Van Lear and Flat Gap are on opposite ends of the county.

THE BOOGIE WOOGIE MAN is sending prayers up from RAMLAND as well. It's always fun to give each other a hard time as we root for our teams but seeing the devastation in Johnson County is heart wrenching. Hope that things get better soon, after something like this, things will never be normal. May God bless all of you! ! ! ! !

Well, I believe the worst of it is over. It's odd how different areas are effected in different ways. The storm that washed Johnson County away, didn't bother Harlan County so much. It was 90 seconds of intense and that was it. Last night; however, was different. The wind and lightening was intense, but the rain was incredible. I'm not sure how much we received, but at least one of our roads is under water. I always judge the condition by how deep 413 is covered. Early this morning, that would've been about 2 feet, receding quickly.

Prayers for everyone effected by this tragedy!!

Here is an update from the 10am press conference from Post 9 State Police and Johnson County/Paintsville Emergency Management......

State Police said have 2 active Missing Persons cases that have been assigned to investigators. But there are 4 people that are still listed as "Unaccounted for." All operations are still called Active Search & Rescue.

There are only 2 deaths from the flooding so far.

Utilities are still in the process of being repaired. Not 'solid' timetable on when they will be restored.

There are supposed to be several amount of State and Federal level officials in Johnson County today.

Only on Rt. 172... no side roads or other routes, 60 homes have been destroyed.
They didn't say when the other routes would be assessed.

No media will be allowed in the area at this time.... Due to the search & rescue missions, utility repairs and heavy equipment in area.

Johnson Central HS is open for dropping off donations/supplies. Anything you can spare or bring, they need it.

The address is 257 North Mayo Trail Paintsville, KY. 41240
606-789-2500 is the number to the school if you have any questions.

They are posting on Facebook 8am-8pm as Hours of Operations. But I would say they will stay as long as needed to make sure everybody is took care of.

The lunch room is being used as the distribution center.

Last night was my first trip in to the Flat Gap/Red Bush area since the flooding.....

Let me say, all the videos and pictures DO NOT DO THE DAMAGE JUSTICE. It has an eerie feeling. It was quite, but the sound of generators and heavy equipment could be heard off in the distance. Seeing people standing around where their homes used to be picking up pieces up what they could find. As the sun began to set, the darkness was amplified because no street lights or residential lighting.

I wanted to cry.... I wanted to cuss.... I wanted to hug somebody.... I wanted to break something. The further we went on 172, the worse I felt. Physical illness set in when I saw the Ramey Branch area.

But thank God everybody we saw and talked to wasn't sitting around waiting for somebody else to do the work for them. They were out trying to salvage everything they could of their own or their family/friends.

Utility crews are there in great numbers. Setting poles, running lines, working on the substation.... they mean business.

Surrounding counties sent Fire Dept.'s, Rescue Squads, Police, EMT's... you name it, and it's there.

If you know somebody on any of the Fire Departments or Rescue Squads from Johnson County or the surrounding counties that were out Monday evening.... buy them dinner. Their actions saved the lives of at least 10-15 people, probably more. And that is actual swift water rescues that were performed Monday evening.

Thank God this flood didn't hit in the morning hours.... the death toll would be in the hundreds, if not more. Also, thank God this didn't happen in the cold weather months.
