I have heard some rumors about changes coming at Pike Central. Can anyone who is in the know shed some light on this?

This is talked every year but nothing happens.

I heard this might be coming after they lost to p-burg in region.

If this is true what is best for the program. Go after a young coach eager to build or a seasoned coach looking to win immediately?

I'm pretty sure that all coaches, young or old, are eager to build and want to win immediately.

Why would they get rid of Carwile? Has done more than any other coach, outside Coach Rowe, for PCC than the other 3 COMBINED.

Well is the Pike Central job open or not?

It hasn't been posted by the school or KHSAA.

I would recommend a young coach. I have seen a lot of older coaches who have the experience but lack the drive or the time to put into a rebuild. And a lot of those old coaches still think old school, the game has changed and its not like it was in the 80's or even 90's and some of the old guys styles have become extinct. They tried Johnny Martin, who was an Allen central legend, and he was a great old school coach and it was ineffective there. Now if Principal Rowe wanted to come back I'd def give him a nod, he was a few years ahead of his time but other than that I would go young and give the young coach a couple years.

It doesn't matter how old you are. Especially if you are a teacher and raised kids of your own. You grow with their changes and trends because you see it everyday. I'm "old" 55 years young. I've run all my life. Might be in better shape than a lot of kids. Experience and lots of it can be very beneficial. But I will say...kids aren't what they used to be. Way to soft.

Just being an observer, looks like Coach Carwile ran off a lot of talent. Not sure what the reason was for these kids leaving, but they did leave. Now mind you I'm not saying he ran off D1 recruits. But he did run off some boys that either have shown or will show they were good 15th Region players. There is talent still there and some on the way, just not sure how good the talent is below the Freshmen level though. I hope that the kids who want to improve, work hard and get better, get a coach that will help them do that.

BOBBY VARNEY JR WILL be the next head coach at Pike Central.....remember where you heard it first!!!!!

Would be a good hire if true!

I watched them play two or three times last year. I thought coach Carwile did a good job.

I agree, but most, not all Old School coaches arent willing to grow or change with the kids. They want the kids to change to them. I also agree kids are way to soft, but nevertheless they are, and that's another coaching challenge older coaches are willing to accept, that's why I am liking some of these younger guys like coach Cook at LC, the smaller age gap seems to keep the connection and the energy and free time they have to put the work in makes a difference. But you will have to agree MOST 55 year youngs aren't in that good of shape, lol.

Personally, I believe that coach Carwile is good at what he does and puts in a lot more time than many other coaches do. From the outside looking in, I believe the reason kids are being "ran off" is because he has high expectations for the student/athletes that he coaches and attempts to motivate them in a non-conducive method aka by yelling. Which goes back to kids being soft, I guarantee that Cameron Justice and Shane Hall have to get "jumped on to" at times but they are probably more mentally tough than most of the other kids. Also, the kids AND parents buy in to those programs and SUPPORT the coaches and players there instead of tearing them down when they lose a game, remember you can't when them all and the world is not perfect. Like I said though I am on the outside looking in so I don't know what has been said coach-coach, coach-player, or coach-parent so personal differences could be reasons that kids are running off. I guess that's the thing to do now though, when things get tough (not hazardous or harmful), run away from it, we will see how far that gets you in life. I hope coach Carwile finds a school that will support him and I hope my Hawks find a coach that will keep the boys around instead of them transferring like I have heard they are going to do (which I have heard multiple names).

Bobby Varney will be a mistake. Why go after a coach that was. 5-23? If Carwile was pushed out for Varney that's just crazy.

I think before you judge a coach by his record, you should consider what they're working with first.
Just my opinion.

I'm sure Phelps will be glad to get rid of him.

Good for him!!!
Coach Carwile is/was a good coach and was a victim of budget cuts more than a victim of coaching performance.

Coach May! Remember that. Frankie can visit and talk that's all it will amount to.
05-15-2014, 07:07 AM
I am also hearing Keith May's name mentioned a lot. It could very well happen. Does anyone know if all the players are coming back or are they moving somewhere else? Not trying to start anything, just asking if anyone knows. Thanks in advance. :thanks:

Keith May
Brandon Kidd
Derrick Newsome
Frankie Smith
Kevin Spurlock
Bobby Varney
Donovan Little
Brian Hundley
Brody justice
Just a few of the names thrown out in and around the county.
Is this a good job?
Will they give someone time to build/fix problems?
Who will make the hire?
Will they allow them to bring in a staff?
This will be the 4th coach in 7 years on Buckley's Creek.
They are 79-108 since Mr. Rowe left the position, only 2 winning season with 3 regional appearances and a semi-final regional appearance according to the KHSAA.

The bold are the only serious contenders from what I've heard. May is in the conversation only because it would keep PC from having to hire another teacher. Frankie Smith is an excellent coach, but seems to be looking to bolt for a better job at every school he's been to since returning to the HS ranks. Spurlock obviously can get good jobs, but you have to begin to wonder why he can't keep them. Varney has been at Phelps for a couple years and has a good group of young talent there, but thats always the problem at Phelps. Once that young talent is developed the players always leave for greener pastures.
The other candidates mentioned are all good coaches too IMO, but high school experience must factor in somewhat when selecting a coach. Pike Central is as good a bball coaching job as you can find in Pike county, all they need is to have a coach in position who knows how to keep his team together, and more importantly, provide the administration assurance that they're in it for the long haul.

Mark Thompson or Bobby Varney will be the next coach..don't b surprised if it's Thompson.
05-16-2014, 10:02 PM
Heard Donavan Little is being considered, behind May though. Thompson 3rd.

Hope Keith May gets a chance. We had a difference or two in the past, but Keith is a super helpful great guy who has done nothing but win. Deserves an HC gig somewhere in basketball OR football.

Talk around Pikeville last night was that Mr. Rowe made a decision and told the main people in power who he wanted to hire last week and wanted them in place by yesterday.
He was told no hiring until after the election.
Between Spurlock, Smith, and Varney. Keith May gets the job only if they do not allow them to create a teaching job.
Little and Thompson are working the Pike County political machine to get the job.
Was Thompson not fired from the job before?
