Hughes over Mayo
Greenup County eighth-grader Gage Hughes is ahead of a Milwaukee Buck in one category.
With his 22 points against Rowan County, Hughes ranks above former Rose Hill star O.J. Mayo for most scored in a region tournament game by an eighth-grader. Mayo had 19 against Morgan County in 2003.
All-Tournament Team
Hunter Holbrook (Elliott County), Grayson Griffith (Boyd County), Ryne Callahan (Rowan County), Connor Greene (East Carter), Brett Ruckel (Lewis County), Wade Adams (Lewis County), Gage Hughes (Greenup County), Jair Jackson (Greenup County), Nick Miller (Ashland), Tyler Stewart (Ashland), Steven Friley (Ashland), Wilder Williams (Fleming County), Austin Crisp (Fleming County), Darion Burns (Fleming County), Brady Saunders (Fleming County). Stop it!! It's hard not to laugh at this one! OJ was honorable mention all-state his 7th grade year and first team his 8th grade year! This is laughable....

Amusing. ESPN, USA Today, and a number of other national media types followed Mayo around during his eighth grade year. People came from literally hundreds of miles away to see him play. Even a goodly number of lifelong Ashland fans were commonly seen wearing blue Rose Hill sweatshirts and tee shirts. Autograph seekers wore Mayo out.
Did Hughes enjoy such fame during his eighth grade year? Of course, you really aren't comparing the two, are you? That would be foolhardy.

Not sure why the overreaction to what the guy posted. He just said that he ranks ahead in one category. Impressive for any 8th grader in my opinion. He also posted the rest of the tournament team.
I don't think he was comparing at all.

I was just quoting the ADI, and I think its great he now holds the distinction of the most regional tourney game points as an 8th grader.

I'm sure Braxton Beverly at perry central scored more than 22 in a regional tournament game when he was in eighth grade. He was MVP of the 14th regional tournament when he was in 7th grade.

If he wasn't comparing, then why did his (or the ADI) "headline" say: HUGHES OVER MAYO ?? That was a poor headline to set up a non-comparison statement...

I guess because Hughes IS over Mayo.............in that one category mentioned.
Poor headline maybe, but nothing to get torn up about. I think we all know that Mayo was/is better.

Beverly did more than that, in the state tournament his 7th grade year, he scored an impressive 23 points against Wayne County in the first round of the Sweet 16. Beverly's 23 points is only second to OJ Mayo's 25 points and 10 rebounds against ballard his 8th grade year.

I'm almost positive that Mayo had 29 against Morgan County.
