Something I don't know, but curious to know, is how they use to decide the sites used for the region tourney in the 13th back then.

The school with the newest gym tended to get the tournament. It was at Knox Central for a while, then Bell County, then Clay County, then it started alternating districts in the 1990s, which is how we finally got it back in Harlan County at Cawood.

My first regional was the 1976 one at Union College. I missed a couple after that in high school, but I think I've been to every one since 1981.

I thought I had heard at one time, it was the newer gyms just as you stated, but I had also heard, it was the school willing to offer the most money in return at some point. Either way, you had to have a school that could hold the capacity.

The bolded are schools that haven't hosted a 15th region tourney... and Yes, I did make the notation about Paintsville.... the statue of limitation has expired on their last hosting in 1957.
