Good choice if that's the decision.

Has South hired someone?
02-18-2014, 10:25 AM
Surely not. 3 epic fails in a row is enough.

As of 10:30 NO!! They interviewed all day yesterday should be a decision made today!

I was told that Coach Shearer has been contacted, but to me it is not that attractive of a job. It is one of the few 6 teams districts and you can bet that Pulaski Co. will win it followed by (in no order) Madison Southern, North Laurel, South Laurel, SW Pulaski, and Lincoln fighting for the next 3 spots. Its a solid district but you have to earn your spot, when in reality most teams don't have to earn it...so maybe that is a positive as well. I was told that a coach in the Southeast part of the state who parted ways with another school was interested as well.

Apparently they interviewed 9 ! I know Donahue from Harlan interviewed, that's the only one I know, I like they missed out on the best candidate!

Interviews were conducted yesterday. I think there were four interviews.

That is just for 1 season. That district will change. I will be suprised if you have any 6 team districts in the future drawings.

How many teams in the district you think? Will Madison Southern be the first team out based on location?

I understand that, but the thing that irks me is that some of these 4 team districts are TERRIBLE and then you have 5 or 6 team districts where all the teams are average but one or two get left out. Anyhow...good luck to whomever gets this job!

Who were the 4 interviews? Was Coach Shearer one? Seems a lot of schools are all hiring at the same time.

I only know one person that interviewed for sure. I can't disclose it right now, though, per his request.

I think it will be the Laurels. They will have to go into a district with Harlan and Whitley with perry and letcher playing in 4a. Leaving PC, SW, LC, and MS.

Are you guessing, or do you know that Russell interviewed. I can't see Russell moving from Knox Central, after he has established that program.

He interviewed. He has for quiet a few this off-season. That would be a good hire for SL!!

That wouldn't be a good hire - that would be a great hire!
I've covered Knox Central for about five years now for the Times Tribune. Coach Russell is one of the best around!

What a steal that would be for the program although I disagree that he established the Knox program, Mills did that.

Mills got it started, I agree. But, you could argue that Russell took it to the next level.

I disagree! Russell has done well but Wayne did take KC to the Region finals. His teams were pretty darn good.
But at any rate SL would be getting a steal with Russell.

I know! I'm not saying Russell is even better than Mills. When I covered Mills, he is by far my favorite coach to cover, and he is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet!
I just said it's arguable. I think some people have treated Russell like UK fans treated Tubby the year after Pitino left. Russell has earned the right to be called a good coach, even if Mills built the program.

Mills leaving sent a shock wave through the school as well as the entire community; it was just so unexpected. I have a friend that went to church with Mills, and he told me that there was no way that Mills would be leaving; he was gone within a week.
Anyway, I said ^that to say this; I think Russell did an outstanding job just to keep the football team as focused as it was. Then with all the injuries that plagued that team this past season, he still moved them forward. I think he did a great job at KC, and would do a great job anywhere he lands.

I couldn't argue that Russel took it to the next level because literally the next level is winning the region and that has not happened. Russell would be the best coach at South since Jep left.
