March Madness is almost upon us. And there's nothing bigger in high school sports in the bluegrass than the KHSAA Boys Sweet 16.... "The Greatest Show in Hoops"
But there are some schools across the state that have never made an apperance in the Sweet 16.
Since my home region is the 15th, I'll start. But let's keep in mind ACTIVE schools. If you want to list schools that have been closed down or consolidated, that is good to. But please label them accordingly.
15th Region (ACTIVE)
Pike County Central
Lawrence County
Magoffin County
Piarist School
Current 15th Region schools with one apperance in the Sweet 16.
Sheldon Clark - 1983
Phelps - 1988
Prestonsburg - 1989
Allen Central - 1994
South Floyd - 2001
East Ridge - 2004
15th Region (DEFUNCT)
- Louisa (Lawrence)
- Blaine (Lawrence)
- Salyersville (Magoffin)

On a side note....
IMO, if a school has been consolidated.... they should have banners representing each school that was closed to form the newer school (such as the East Ky Expo Center) does during the 15th region tourney.
The banners should be the school's colors and have the the Name and Macot of the school that was closed as well. If any of the teams won a regional or state championship, they should be on the banner as well.

Just from memory, the 13th Region schools that have never been to the Sweet 16 would include:
Jackson County
Red Bird
Harlan County
Oneida Baptist
Lynn Camp
Whitley County
Barbourville
Pineville
Current 13th Region schools that have won the Sweet 16 include:
South Laurel
Clay County
Corbin
Harlan
In history, the school with the best and most chances of going to the Sweet 16 but never went was Cawood. Neither Phil Cox nor Nick Sanford could get the Trojans over the hump. The most heartbreaking story has to be the Benham High School team in 1936. The undefeated Tigers could not go the state tournament due to a quarantine. There was a flu epidemic in Harlan County and no one was allowed to leave the county. None of the Benham team had flu symptoms but they still were not allowed to leave. Corbin, the 2nd best team in the region, ended up winning the state tournament. Benham had beaten Corbin earlier in the year.

What a way to end a season.....
Looking back on it...the coach from Benham should have challenged the Corbin team to a game after the state tourney. Play for the state trophy that they won.

What year did the Pineville Mountain Lions upset Cawood. If I recall Pineville had Gary Ferguson on that team. That was one of the greatest upsets in 13th region history.

Raceland has never been to the Sweet 16 from the 16th. I am sure there is more, I'm too lazy to look it up.

Hard to believe Sheldon Clark and Prestonsburg only have one appearance in the sweet 16.

From the 8th, I know that Collins, North Oldham, and Spencer County have never been to the Sweet 16. I'm sure there are others, can anyone help me out?

I'm surprised that Pike County Central has never been either. They have been active since the early/mid 90's.

It's a good idea in theory. Realistically though when you become a new school you seek an identity, not the same ole ones. I'm sure the kids of Mullins would be so happy to see the Johns Creek banners hanging in Pike Central or Millard happy about all the Elkhorn City banners hanging in East Ridge or Dorton happy about Virgie banners in Shelby Valley. It doesn't bold well for community spirit.

Last time I was in Shelby Valley's gym... they had a banner titled "Our History" with the Virgie's & Dorton's regional championship seasons on it.

Must have missed that one. Then again I don't concern myself with matters of such. I was just making a useful observation.

That was a huge upset. However, I think the biggest upset was when lowly ranked Jackson Co upset Corbin, who had been ranked #1 in KY much of the year in 1994. If I remember correctly Jackson Co shot 38 free throws to Corbin's 1 free throw in regulation. The game went to two overtimes. Jackson Co couldn't miss from the three point line.

1978
I think that's the biggest upset in 13th Region history, and Bobby Keith agreed with me once when we discussed it. Cawood ended the year 24-2. I think Pineville had a losing record.
Jackson County had some real good teams in the 1990s. That was a tournament for upsets. I think Harlan had the best team in the region that year (Thomas, Jones, Cox, Lester) and lost in the semifinals to Clay County.
Now that I think about it, the 94 Harlan team and 78 Cawood team may be the two best I've seen in Harlan County.

I believe that Harlan and Corbin were both ranked really high in the state that year and that the region was held at Clay County. Did Charlie Kirk officiate that game?
Did Harlan end up winning the region?

You forgot Meade Memorial in the "defunct" category Pulp....I think they had 3 or 4 regional championships as well.
I can also think of Inez, Garrett, Maytown, McDowell, Wayland, and Martin, and Wheelwright that could be added to the defunct list too. I'm pretty sure some of those schools have been to the Sweet 16 as well.

Girl's parent, I don't follow the boys that close but I'll take a shot, somebody correct me if I'm wrong:
I don't think Lewis Co., West Carter, Menifee Co or Bath Co have been to the Sweet 16 either.
Help??
help??

Bath county went twice as a member of the 10th region .. 1975 and 1977.. The Bruce Jones era.. But never as a member of the 16th

5TH REGION (18 CURRENT SCHOOLS)
SCHOOL: LAST APPEARANCE
Adair County (2009)
Bardstown (2011)
Bardstown Bethlehem (NEVER, although Bardstown St. Joseph won the 6th Region in 1940 and I THINK St. Joe merged into BB)
Campbellsville (1973)
Caverna (2004)
Central Hardin (NEVER, been open since 90-91 season)
Elizabethtown (2005)
Fort Knox (1948, but came as a member of 6th Region)

Hart County (1989)
John Hardin (2013)
LaRue County (1988)
Marion County (1997)
Nelson County (NEVER, although I think some schools which merged into Nelson won some in the 6th Region)
North Hardin (2010)
Taylor County (1983)
Thomas Nelson (NEVER, but school is only two years old after splitting from Nelson)

Look at the post above yours. Harlan lost to Clay County on a controversial foul call at the end.
That was Harlan's most talented team though. It shouldn't have been that close. Bobby Keith had announced his retirement earlier. He announced it again when Clay beat Harlan in the 1999 finals.

Most of these schools have been in the 4th Region since 1966 after moving over from the 5th Region. So in the case of Clinton County and one of the schools that consolidated into Monroe County, they did win the region these other teams were in, it just wasn't officially the 4th Region.
4TH REGION (17 CURRENT SCHOOLS)
SCHOOL: LAST APPEARANCE
Allen County-Scottsville (1996)
Barren County (1999)
Bowling Green (2012)
Clinton County (1960, but came as a member of 5th Region)
Cumberland County (NEVER, but Marrowbone, one of two schools to consolidate into Cumberland County, advanced to State Tournament as 3rd Region Class B champion in 1927)
Franklin-Simpson (1992)
Glasgow (1977)
Greenwood (2008)
Logan County (1984)
Metcalfe County (1985)
Monroe County (NEVER, but Tompkinsville, one of two schools to consolidate into Monroe County, won six titles, last in 1957 as a member of 5th Region)
Russell County (1957, but came as a member of 12th Region)
Russellville (2001)
South Warren (NEVER, but school is only in its 4th season after split from Greenwood)
Todd County Central (1981, but came as a member of 2nd Region)
Warren Central (2013)
Warren East (1997)
Also notable, it's been 34 years since Cumberland County has even played for a chance to go, and it's been 54 years since Clinton County has made a region final, the only one they've made in 74 years as a program. Good thing Clinton County won that one - they've won 6 region tournament games since.
