Early 80's ICW Wrestling
#1
Does anyone remember the days of ICW Wrestling. They would run shows in Ky, Wv. Il. etc. Used to run Marlows Country Palace in Pikeville, Pburg National Guard Armory and so on. They had talent like Randy Savage, Leaping Lanny Poffo, Ronnie Garvin, Bob Orton Jr. and Bob Roop. Owned and operate by Angelo Poffo who wrestled as the Miser. Also the father of Randy Savage and Leaping Lanny. I even remember, shortly before they closed up shop, they ran a show in Betsy Layne, Ky at the DW Howard Memorial Gym, and selling tickets was none other than Miss Elizabeth! Actually she was known as Liz Hulette at the time and was dating "Macho Man" Randy Savage.

Yeah, I was at the Betsy Layne show. Liz also did the introductions that night. Ron Sexton, Macho Man's opponent that night, got into a fight with someone at ring side and the match had to be stopped temporarily. After the match Macho Man was mad as hell and got on the microphone and bad mouthed the Betsy Layne Football team who was sponsoring the event. It was a great show. BTW, the Spruce Pine Tigers were awesome back in the day.

Your memory is great, I had forgotten about the other stuff. Spruce Pine maybe wasn't awesome, but everyone should get to experience something like that. It was a very unique experience.

Hey, I thought Spruce Pine was great. I wasn't being a jerk. I was being sincere. My mom went to school there. We had our cub scout meeting there years ago when I was young lol! I never went there but live very close to it.

Check this ICW page out if you have not already.

Never thought for a second that you were trying to be a jerk. I have been to the website you listed many times. A lot of great memories from back in the day. I have on tape and dvd some old stuff you might enjoy. It's early 80's SouthEastern Championship Wrestling with The Matador (Jerry Stubs), Troy T. Tyler, The Manchurians managed by the Great Mephisto, etc. It also has some ICW stuff on it. Good chatting with you, sure liked the old 'rasslin better than this sports entertainment stuff. I did attend Spruce Pine, and it was something that kids today can't relate too, well, mine can't anyway...lol

I loved ICW. Macho Man was, is, and always will be my favorite wrestler. And yes, you're right. Today's "wrestling" can't hold the light to the old wrestling.

ICW didn't really close up shop, they merged with CWA and Memphis Wrestling. Jerry Jarrett bought IWC from Randy (who actually owned IWC, not his dad). Angelo promoted the East and Jarrett promoted the West, and after a few months, they would trade talent.

I loved ICW. Garvin, Savage, Orton, Roop, Leaping Lanny, Pez Whatley and the forever under rated "Hustler" Rip Rogers. I watched them at AB Combs elementary every month. Still to this day, the most fun I have ever had at a wrestling event.

Does anyone remember when the Ultimate Warrior and Sting debuted on the Memphis wrestling show? They didn't stay a long time and it may have been their first appearance in a major promotion.

I remember and independent show being run at the DW Howard Fieldhouse sometime in 1987 or 1988. Main event was Wahoo McDaniel and Tommy Rich vs The Original Midnight Express with Paul E. Dangerously. The show was pretty good as I recall and there was a tag team who worked the undercard who might have been called the US Express or something to that nature. Can't remember who the wrestled but they performed very well. Does anybody have any idea who that may have been? This was the same night that some kid got pushed or allegedly got pushed at ringside by Paul E. and most of the ringside fans tried to get into or around the ring. Also, the tail was for years that the Express had to have a police escort to leave. May have been one of the last wrestling events held there.
