What a great game! I'm proud of our boys. They played their hearts out. It took OT for a AAA school to beat us! Let's shake it off, learn from it, and get ready for next week.

Wow, shocked by this one. I guess Ashland rebounded fairly well from a loss to Raceland. Sounds like a great game though, wish I could've been there.

Man was I close,
I picked Ashland 21-20 on the previous thread.

Same AAA team loss to a single A team last week.

Wow...I sure didn't expect this. I thought that Belfry would have their way with the Tomcats but a great win for Ashland. How good must Raceland be?
Congrats Ashland
Congrats Ashland

First off, I tip my hat to Belfry, you all have one outstanding football team that played a heck of a game! I have no doubt that this Belfry team will be playing deep into the playoffs once again. Good luck to the Pirates on the rest of the year, I'll be rooting for you all!
Second, I really like the way we stepped it up tonight. A lot of people (even our own) did not think that we could win this game. The O-line played much better than last week, and we had good balance on offense. Our offense played well, but there were still a couple of times we had the ball in Belfry's territory and didn't convert, but I credit the defense as they stepped up and made some great plays to stop us. We'll have to work on converting our drives when we're in the opposition's territory, because that hurt us badly against Raceland and it nearly cost us this week.
Also, our defense stepped up and made some big plays at times, and recovered 4 or 5 fumbles throughout the game, including one recovery that won the game for us in OT. Fumbles and penalities are one thing that really hurt Belfry tonight.
Third- I must say, this is one of the BEST football games I have EVER seen!! Hopefully play Belfry again in the future and have more breath taking games like this one.
And finally, I think this is a big step for us, and I look for us to take another big step next week when we play Russell.

Good game ...I would have went for the win also!!!!!

Sounds like a great game any stats?
08-26-2006, 02:11 AM
Here is a stat.....2 defintiely, maybe 3 Pirate TDs called back.
I'm pretty sure I heard Joe Kinzer say 3, but he is an idiot and I know of 2 for sure.

Maydo ran for 3 TDs but had 2 called back for penalties which didn't even have flags, one of which was a dead ball false start which wasn't blown dead, and which left the clock running at the end of the 1st half.
A great game, yes, but the officiating in it was terrible. I'm not saying it cost us the game, because Ashland was putting together a drive in the 3rd and some penalties I didn't see stopped their drive as well, I'm just saying that all the officials in tonight's game need a new prescription for their glasses.
Some highlights were Ashland's #3 catching a tremendous pass late to set up their last TD. Ashland's QB #7 is an amazing football player. Not only is he fast and has a great arm, but he runs hard and is difficult to bring down. The blitz on the last PAT had been a long time coming, as we'd run the same play 5 times in a row. Ashland kicked on their last regulation PAT when a 2 pointer would have locked a win for them.
Belfry had a flubbed snap on a PAT which might have won the game for us. Belfry ran the same 5 plays all night long. Maydo I believe carried the ball on over half of our plays. We played solid D but didn't respect their QB enough. For the most part our line blocked great, the only times we had problems up front were when Ashland blitzed. A lot of people are going to give Ryan crap for his fumbles tonight, but he can't help getting hit in the middle of a handoff. We need to work on how to block 6 men with 5 this week.
Sorry for being so pessimistic, but I saw a lot of mistakes from involved adults tonight. It was a very even matchup, a great game was played by the kids on BOTH teams, and all those boys deserve a pat on the back.
TBH though, come December, who won or lost this game won't matter one bit. We've found some chinks in our armor that we need to work on (as did Ashland, I'm sure), and I'm sure the coaches will live up to their "keep improving" philosophy this week as we gear up for Lawrence. I'd like to wish good luck to Ashland on the rest of the season, you boys played a great game, even though I was cheering against you 8 ) I've already chatted with our kids. If any of our boys see this, I love you all like my lil bros, and I'm proud as heck of how you played tonight!

Congrats to both teams OT losses are hard to take but I think both of these teams could go deep into the Playoffs so hats off to both !

Wow what a game! Playing against Prestonsburg in '03 was the last time I'd seen such an exciting football game. I still can't believe May wasn't given the ball on the last 2 point conversion. Ashland knew he was going to get the ball most of the night and very rarely stopped him before he gained 4-5 yards.
I agree that the officiating was spotty at best. The great run by May down the home sideline was called back correctly. There was a clear clip about 5 yards behind him that didn't effect the play at all but someone made a poor decision. As for the QB keep on the option and May's punt return on the visitor's sideline, they were both called back, but I didn't notice any glaring penalities.
Ashland's offense was much improved this week with the conversion of McDavid back to receiver and bringing Mahan in at QB. Most fans had been expecting Mahan to start this season and were surprised to see McDavid get the start in the opener this year with Mahan seeing very limited playing time. This change became absolutely neccesary after the injury to Luke Bonner last week (who is rumored to be able to return in 3-4 weeks from a knee injury).
Belfry's offense dominated Ashland's defense most of the night. The only things that stopped Belfry, were Belfry's mistakes, primarily fumbles. May was a man among mostly boys tonight and it showed as he was nearly unstoppable. I was also very impressed by Belfry's QB. This QB looked much, much better than the Belfry QB I saw play last season against Russell.

Congrats Ashland, and good game Pirates, just need to work on those fumbles.

Darn, I turned this game off with 6 minutes to go and the score was 14-13 and Ashalnd was on the Belfry 9 yd line so I gave up. Looks like I missed a good game. Belfry needs to take care of that football and they'll be just fine. To come back on the road in a hostile environment and play that well shows me alot....
We're still proud of ya boys, you could have just given up but you didn't. Let's get out there in practice and focus on keeping ahold of the ball and beat those Dawgs !!!
Go Pirates !!!

Sounds like this was a great game,Congats to Asland and g/l next week to both teams

It was the best game I have seen in a while besides all of Belfrys mistakes. I think Belfry proved how good they were last night. They shouldn't have even been in the game, with all the fumbles, penalties, touchdowns called back, it shouldn't have even came down to OT. It just shows belfry has heart and is ready to play. Dustin May did an excellent job. I just hope Corey and Phillip come to play a little bit better next week but still good job boys. The Ashland team is very good and I look to see them going far in the playoffs but still it shouldn't have been a game, I'm very proud of the Pirates for sticking it out and giving it all whenever it could've eaisly been over with.

This is really a shocker to me. I guess I am just use to seeing Be;fry win about every time they play. I think this loss will only fuel their fire. I look forward to the Belfry and Sheldon Clark Game.

I think you are absolutely correct. Sometimes, it takes a loss to bring a team together and get them back on track and I think that was the case for Belfry. They will be ready to play every Friday, I don't see them loosing again and I hope I am right.
08-26-2006, 01:02 PM
Yeah, this may be the last Belfry loss this season. I think this game will serve a greater purpose.

Yes, mistakes killed Belfry last night. If Phillip and Corey would've been on top of their game it would've been a different game I believe but everyone has their nights and this is something to gain off of and learn from. Come December it won't even matter anymore, hopefully we will be back on that magic carpet.

I totally agree. Allthough SOME of our members on here could be a little biased about D. :thatsfunn But anyway i agree. By the way he's good 4 more than 3 yards every time.

Why would anyone be biased about D? Everyone knows he was the one who needed the ball on the last play, everyone knows he is what carries belfry most of the time and other times it's Corey.

I actually think that the officiating last night was totally in the home teams favor, but hey you have to be prepared for that when you're on the road.
Yes, we did make some mistakes, but I think Belfry got some bad calls. Nothing against the Ashland kids, it's just too bad that the bumbling refs decided the game.

You are right. We had some mistakes but who doesn't make mistakes during a game? It was half that and half refs. The last touchdown called back on Dustin May was a killer and could have been avioded there was no reason for it. Chapman wasn't doing anything the other team wasn't doing. I think we proved we were the better team though, what team do you know that is a class under the team they are playing have that many penalties, touchdowns called back (one that needed to be called back) but the other one should've been 6 points, fumble after fumble and still go into OT? It shouldn't have been a game but the Pirates are a very tough team. I keep thinking maybe if we would've just went for the extra point and got the ball back again but you never know, if the ball would've been given to Dustin they couldn't have stopped him but things happen and we will never know what would've .... its over Belfry will be prepared this Friday! KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON PIRATES!!
