The Titans looked better than they did last week but still have plenty of room for improvement. They have a tough one next week as they host Ballard.

Visiting Collins took advantage of three turnovers and a 2-1 ratio in time of possession to handle host South Oldham 41-14 Friday night in a game that left both teams 1-1.

Collins scored the first 17 points with a balanced effort. Blanton Creque kicked a 34-yard field goal, Masai Whyte rushed for a 1-yard touchdown and then defensive back Elijah Jones intercepted a Chase Lightfoot pass and returned it 35 yards for a score.

"I thought our defense really stepped up," said Collins head coach Jerry Lucas. "Offensively we're still sputtering at times, but we do a lot of different things so it takes us some time to get going. I thought our kicking game was outstanding, and both lines did a good job of controlling the line of scrimmage. We just had a lot of kids who played really well.

"The main thing is for the third week in a row our kids played hard. That's the thing we talked about all week. We have to get better every week. I thought our kids did a good job of executing today and we made some big plays. That South Oldham team is very well coached."

South Oldham head coach Jamie Reed was disappointed in the way his team responded to Collins' early momentum.

"They're a great team, but I told our boys that we didn't hold up our end of the bargain tonight," said Reed. "I told them we left some opportunities on the field."

Such as the game's opening drive. The Dragons put together a 12-play drive thanks to a fake punt conversion on fourth down and two at their own 28-yard line. But the drive stalled when Lightfoot was stopped inches short of a first down on fourth-and-four at the Collins 30.

Collins went to work. The Titans marched to the South Oldham 15 before settling on Creque's field goal. Their defense held the Dragons to a three-and-out, and South Oldham's punt went 15 yards and then bounced backward for a net loss of 11. Collins took over on the Dragons' 17, and three plays later Masai Whyte pounded it in from the 1 for a 10-0 lead with 12.5 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

The Collins defense got in on the act on the ensuing drive with Jones' score just one minute into the second quarter.

South Oldham finally responded when Lightfoot hit wide receiver Starr Thompson in stride behind the secondary for a 63-yard touchdown with 8:35 left. The kick failed so the score remained 17-6.

With the half coming to a close, Collins marched 64 yards on nine plays and Lawson Page hit Nathan Sames from 10 yards out for a 24-6 lead at intermission.

The Titans did just what they wanted to coming out of halftime, with a 10-play drive ending in a 43-yard field goal by Creque that took almost four minutes off the clock.

South Oldham's offense was ready. The Dragons marched 80 yards on 10 plays, culminating in a 16-yard touchdown run by Kevin Kuriger and a two-point conversion on a pass from Lightfoot to Thompson to cut the deficit to 27-14 with 4:50 left in the third quarter.

Page led the Titans downfield for the answering score. Ryan Watkins finished off a 10-play, 57-yard drive with a 13-yard run up the middle for a touchdown with 1:08 left in the third. On their next drive the Titans scored again, this time on a 1-yard run by DeAndre Farris to make it 41-14 with 11:46 left in the game.
