South Oldham 85 Collins 82 (OT)
#1
Final from the 8th. What an incredible 4th quarter comeback by the Titans, including a put back basket off of a missed free throw as the horn sounded at the end of regulation. They trailed 57-39 entering the 4th, and got it to 21 early in the 4th. Kudos to South for gathering themselves in OT and pulling it out.

Hopefully one of our board's 8th region fans were there and can tell us more.

Doesn't get much better than that! Collins didn't play very well the first 3 quarters but they sure did in the 4th, outscoring South 31-13. South shot the lights out like they usually do but got a little tired at the end when Collins made their run. Collins had the ball down 3 with 29 seconds left and missed a 3 with 2 seconds left. South Oldham got the rebound but traveled with 0.5 seconds left giving Collins the ball back. South fouled Ralphie Stone before the ball was inbounded and his first shot hit every part of the rim and bounced in. The second shot bounced around and out and Buddy Johnson got the rebound and put it in right before the buzzer. In OT South scored the first points and held the lead the entire way. Buddy Johnson's 9th 3 cut the lead to 83-82 with 5 seconds left. South hit 2 free throws and Collins wasn't able to get a shot off at the end. Collins made one heck of a comeback and both teams played a fantastic game. There is no tournament that is more exciting than the 8th region!

Saw where he was 9/15 from three. Wow.

Buddy Johnson had a game of a lifetime. South had a big lead (20) most of the game, but Collins fought back.
With .5 left how can a missed FT, be tipped and then put back in?

The clock operator does not start the clock until the referee signals the clock operator to start the clock. It was an exciting finish.

NEW CASTLE, Ky. —

Matthew Haysley started the game red hot and finished it the same way in overtime as South Oldham held on to beat a rallying Collins basketball team 85-82 Tuesday night in the first round of the Eighth Region Tournament at Henry County.

Haysley scored 12 points in the first quarter and his team's first 13 points in the four-minute overtime to wind up with 27 points. The senior guard made 9 of 12 shots, including three of five 3-pointers as South Oldham (22-7) claimed a hard-earned victory in an incredible finish.

South Oldham, seeking its first regional title, will play Simon Kenton (19-10) in Friday's 8:30 p.m. semifinal after two-time defending champion Oldham County tests Anderson County at 6:30. Simon Kenton ruined Eminence's first regional game since 2000 in a 64-33 romp in the second contest Tuesday night.

Collins, ranked 19th statewide in The Courier-Journal's Litkenhous Ratings, rallied from a 21-point deficit (60-39) early in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime on a last-season putback by the Titans' Buddy Johnson.

Johnson was simply amazing, scoring 34 points by hitting 11 of 19 shots, including 9 of 15 threes in his final game for Collins.

"I'd never played in a regional game before because I sprained my ankle last year and didn't get to play," Haysley said. "I wanted to do all I could to keep us alive (in the tournament) and give us a chance to go to Rupp Arena (where the Sweet 16 tournament will be played March 6-10 in Lexington."

Haysley breathed a sigh of relief after South Oldham avenged a 75-73 overtime loss to Collins on Dec. 7.

"We did everything possible we could to lose this game and we still won," he said.

Collins (21-7) caught fire after Mitch Catinna, who tallied 18 points, hit a three to put South Oldham up 60-39. Johnson scored 13 points in the last period, including two free throws that made it 68-64 with 53.7 seconds left.

Michael Haysley, Matthew's twin, sank two free throws for a 70-64 lead, but Brent Kidwell pulled Collins within 70-67 by making a three at the 0:29 mark. When Catinna dribbled the ball off his foot and out of bounds, Collins got its big chance, but South Oldham chose to foul Ralphael Stone inside the 3-point line with 0:00.5 left.

Stone made his first free throw, then missed his second. Johnson quickly grabbed the rebound under the basket and made a back-over-the-head putback to tie it 70 at the horn.

"We fought hard and played with passion, which shows the character of this team," Collins coach Chris Gaither said.

South Oldham's Matthew Haysley sank four straight foul shots in overtime to make it 82-76. Johnson then hit his eighth three, but Haysley made another free throw for an 83-79 margin. Johnson then banked in a three to make it 83-82. Catinna closed the door by canning two foul shots with 0:04.8 left.

Dez Marshall had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Collins. Kidwell got nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter.
