Pike Central vs Belfry, District Championship
#1
Any chance Pike Central pulls off a sweep on Wednesday night? I think the girls are probably favored, i'm sure the boys are not. Boys split during the regular season, each won on their home floor. Playing at Belfry might make a difference. Central needs a big bame from someone besides Ethan Blackburn, how about Gage Ray or Tyler Burnett? Should be an entertaining game.

The key to this game for Belfry ... Sean Hurley. The Pirates have shown time and time again they're a MUCH better team when he chips in 10-20 points.

Belfry and Coach Casey have to be really worried that for the THIRD YEAR IN A ROW they are favored to win the title but may panic and lose it again. A LOT of pressure on Belfry to win tonight. A LOT ! Did I say A LOT !!!!!!!!!

63-53 Pirates
Tony Messer is now the BHS all time leading rebounder.

Wow. Messer has had one heck of an athletic career at Belfry.

Congrats young man.

He could be the best all round athlete to ever grace the halls of Belfry High School.

No disrespect to Messer, because he is a phenom, but thats a pretty bold statement considering you've had a guy who's name is still on Commonwealth Stadium and had 10+ years in the NFL wear the red and white. I would probably put Messer in the conversation though with some of the all time best athletes at Belfry just not sure I would call him the best. Would be a good debate though. Good luck basketball Bucs in the region!!!

NFL or Kentucky or what ever. I said could be. I said all round Athlete. Not just football not just B Ball. Name players who exceled and done as well at more than one sport.. "All round athlete" something more than football B- Ball or baseball or other sports. "I SAID COULD BE" prove me wrong.:devilflam

I don't know what Rick Kestner or anyone from belfry done in more than one sport. But what they done at Belfry may not compare to messer in all sports.

Great player, but you're reaching.

Jimmy Bevins, Dr. Gary Smith, Dustin May...Messer and others I am sure...David Jones and Doug Howard...all could be in the conversation for multi-sports greats at BHS.
#18
They all have their arguments for sure. Tony is definitely an all-time great and one of the biggest fearsome athletes at Belfry due to his size. Couldn't pick one over the other.
#19
well congrats to them all, and i guess david jones is the only one still doing anything in sports, hopefully Tony works even harder in college, and gets a chance in the NFL or Canadian league because he has the size and hands...

Rick Kestner – Kestner was a three-sport star at Belfry High School, showcasing his talents for the
Pirates in football, baseball and basketball. On the basketball hardwood, Kestner scored over 1,500
points and on the baseball diamond he helped Belfry earn the school’s first trip to the State Baseball
Tournament.
The above quote was posted when he was elected into the KHSAA Hall of Fame in 2005. He had a career .385 batting average. Lettered all 4 years in track. Had a season of 16 Td receptions. Scored 242 career pts in football. In 1964 against the Ole Miss Rebels, which at the time was the #1 team in the country had 9 receptions for 185 yds and 3 TD's. I'd say he was more than a 2 sport standout, but that would be my argument. Listen I'm by no means bashing your quote, I truly enjoy good debates. Like I said Messer is an absolute stud no doubt, but probably not to this level. If I have some more free time today I may look up a few more guys I could put in this list. I know Messer has been a statistical beast in basketball but what are his football stats?

in football, his number wont be good, but thats not his fault, you know coach haywood dont throw the ball alot,so you really cant compare the 2 there..
#22
^ yes I totally understand that but stats such as rebounds and blocked shots weren't kept then and there wasn't a three pt shot (Not to say he shot long outside shots) but I could make arguments for Kestners stats as well. The fact is if you're comparing players from 2 totally different eras.....Stats are all you have...By the reference to Coach Haywoods style then maybe Howard and Jones offensive stats would then be inflated compared to the Jimmy Bevins' and Cap Woods players due to having more balanced type offenses. I hope Messer goes onto having a great collegiate career and the hopes of an NFL career, but most importantly I hope he makes the most of a free education and doesn't end up home in a year like I see many of our local athletes do. I don't know him personally but he seems like a great kid and he is a flat out beast. A combination of size and athleticism not often seen in these parts.
