Clay County vs Wayne County updates???
#1
Anyone have updates on this game???
#2
Clay got destroyed. Wayne came ready and Clay looked pathetic be nice about it. I think the final was 80-53 or something like that. Wayne has less talent but they played well as a team. Clay
County seems to have hit a low point. We'll see if Marcum can bring it out of them.

Wayne has some good talent just young talent. I think the freshman Stearnes is averging close to 17ppg and 10reb, soph. Woods close to same numbers. Wayne is overshadowed by Southwestern and pulaski,in the 12th although they have beat sw by double didgets on the road. But i did think this would be a war between to good teams.

After coming from the dead against Jackson County, the Tigers weren't ready for this one even before warm-ups. You could just tell by the body language. Wayne has to be well coached because they played extremely well as a team. Looking at the starting line-ups, you would have thought Clay County by 15. No chance, got to give it to the Wayne County kids.

Rodney Woods the man is a Hall of Fame coach in the state of Kentucky.

Wayne County may not pass the look test but they can flat play. People who know basketball thought Wayne would have a real chance to win at Clay but not by that margin.

Wayne County has impressed me since 2011 when I first watched them play the Tigers. At the time it was a big time game with Clay County and their WYMT championship squad against a top 10 team. They came and smacked the boys then. Two victories also last season. They definitely have the Tiger's number. They play team ball and are offensively strong.

Shocked me when I heard this margin

The margin surpised me, but I went expecting a loss for Clay. Marcum has not beaten Wayne in his 3 years. Rodney Woods teams are disciplined and play a team game, much like the old Clay County teams. They control the tempo and do not turn the ball over. This allows you to beat teams with better talent that choose to play a more one on one style and/or run and gun style.
Clay is at a critical point. Let's face it, Jackson outplayed them badly for 3 1/2 quarters on Friday, then a few things happened. Jackson tried to hold the ball and lost momentum. Mcdaniel caught fire and could not miss, and the refs also got caught up in the excitement and all the calls late went for Clay. Marcum is very close to losing this team as he did with the 10-11 team. Players even starters are threatening to quit, some players that should be playing are in the dog house and no longer getting any minutes. It is a battle every day to keep them playing. There was a blowup in the locker room last night at half time and after the game between the coach and a few players. So if he does not act fast and in the right manner, he will lose one of the better teams Clay has had in a while.

I may be mistaken but I heard several players say Coach cried in the locker room asking why they didn't want to play for him. Take that for what it's worth. Would've liked to of seen a better effort last night, painful to watch.

Wayne County is pretty good this year
#12
Jed: you are exactly right. Marcum is at the breaking point of this season and possibly his coaching career at Clay. He lost the 2011 team and the next 2 weeks will determine this years fate.

I should come back and coach...then again, I wouldn't want to make everyone look stupid like I used to do back in my prime baby.
#14
It's very disappointing a team that has shown a lot of potential falling apart and may struggle to get out of district.
#15
As tough as the 49th district is this year not to mention the upcoming schedule of Perry Central and other possible opponents in WYMT classic, Harlan, and at North Laurel now is a very bad time for this team to start falling apart.
#16
Heard this was one of the worst losses ever for the Tigers. Very talented team, just too much locker room turmoil.
#17
Anyone have stats for this game?
#18
With some tough games coming up in the WYMT classic, it doesn't get any easier for Clay. As they say, winning cures everything...

This does not sound like a Hall of Fame coach to me but rather some kid using his name thats been watching too much Dick Vital. Best wishes to the tigers I know you guys have talent over there. I think you all already know what the problem is.

Because of Bobby Keith, no coach outside of a Billy Hicks could walk in that gym and have respect. It starts with the parents who dislike anyone who is somewhat popular from the town. Robert may not be a Hall of Fame coach, but it's not like he can't win. He just can't beat Wayne or close out the region. The kids are 11-4 and honestly, are doing a lot better than I would've thought. A better opening record than the 2011 squad (barring the same competition). I will agree, that if he doesn't somehow find a way to win the region this year, he will be almost chased out of town (not literally). Jackson County out played Clay County like someone said earlier for 3 1/2 quarters and I have to believe that at least had SOME affect on the game. In one of the greatest finishes you will ever see and playing a solid team less than 24 hours later (I don't want to hear Holiday tournament talk with back-to-back days), that's a rivalry game. Minimal fans, no cheerleaders, no band, second best scorer out of the game. Not trying to make excuses but the proof is in the pudding. WYMT will say a lot.

Marcum's teams have beat most of the teams they should have beaten, but name me one game that he has won as a coach against a better team. From BubbaWatson's comments that may have been Pebblebrook, but see if you can name an in state school. His teams beat teams that they are more athletic than, but because of his style struggle badly against more athletic or well coached teams.

jed - This season, as you said, the Tigers have really just beaten who they should have. 3 close losses outside of Wayne County. Last season they beat Eastern who spent time in the polls and Harlan County was a slight favorite in that 13th region tournament game. As for 2011, that team won the WYMT but would turn around and lose to lesser competition so I definitely see where you're coming from. However, it's not like he has had top notch talent the last two seasons. Other than McDaniel, they really don't have a killer threat. Just 2 or 3 more role players, Bowling has played above and beyond what he should at 6'3". Reed hasn't shown up all season and I personally was hoping for at least 14 ppg from him instead of 9.
#23
What exactly is Marcum's style? Also, unless these kids are playing ALL year round, they won't be that competitive outside of the 13th region. 25 years ago, kids in Clay Co. played year round. It makes a huge difference.
#24
Considering Bubba Watson liked my post, and the fact that him and UKCC are obviously on a McDaniel love-fest, i'd be more than happy to set you up a date with the kid and maybe you two could rub his feet for him as well. I'm the legendary Bobby Keith, and me and my posse challenge you to a game on the Baptist courts ANYTIME. B.I.G. Larry can drill the 3's, while Donnie Hacker pumps your gas baby.
#25
^ You seriously have issues.
#26
jed: you are exactly right. Marcum's teams struggle more with the teams that are well disciplined and organized more than they do the athleticism. If his teams are more athletic than the other team he will usually pull off the win. But I'm not looking forward to the rest of this season for Clay. Unless the attitudes turn around and the players understand their roles and play with the intensity they did for a couple games in Florida, then things are going to go south for the Tigers.

The Tigers just played a district rival in a game that will determine seeding in a district that has three very good teams 24 hours before, the next game is against Perry Central in the WYMT and someone is surprised they came out flat?
-
These kids are not going to get fired up to play Wayne County. Why should they? How many of them could name one player on the Cardinals? Rodney Woods means nothing to them.
-
Jackson County has two kids that played with them at Clay County and Perry Central has developed into a great rival. So they bombed in a sandwich game. It happens. Get over it...

catscards - OMG!! THANK YOU!!! Somebody else gets it. How does an entire program fall apart after one loss? Just absolutely blows my mind. A loss that means absolutely nothing in district or regional play.
#29
The loss to Wayne was only a small part of why I and most of the others say they are falling apart. It is the morale of the players. There is a lot of turmoil and friction between the players and Coach right now. It started before the Wayne game.
#30
I thought Robert was doing pretty good. When I saw them play they didn't exactly look like there were bunches of players out there that stood out above everyone else. They still have one of the better programs in the mountains year in and year out. I believe Robert is as good a coach as any and The days of dominating a region every year is gone. Great players will make a great coach, having several good players can make a good team but one that cannot win every game. Just an opinion from the outside with an observation that doesn't probably count for much.
