What are the best defenses in Eastern Kentucky this upcoming season???
05-21-2006, 12:48 PM
More than likely Rockcastle County

Johnson Central Returns 9 starters from last years defense.

Bell, Belfry, Breathitt occasionally(under-sized), Prestonsburg.....the most consistant contenders most always have a good defense.

Watch out for Pikevilles D this year, IMO one of the best linebacking corps wve had in years here.

i thought pikeville had a good defense last year

Our entire team has gotten alot stronger since thanks to Coach J and Coach Copelys meat grinder of an off season workout program. We have gotten faster as well which is what got us beat at Hazard. With Mayo and the Honaker twins at LBs IMO theyre gonna cracks some heads this year. Im excited about this year and Im sure Im not the only person in Pikeville who is.

Breathitt has no consistancy on defense at all. 95-96 had good defenses,
won it in 2002 but D gave up 27 to Russell in Semis. Middlesboro runs a much better defense.Breathitt tries to copy Male's version of that crazy pressure D .

Breathitt was 11-0 , played P-burg gave up 42 in the first half 2 years ago and all P-burg did was run the sweep.

I believe JCHS will have one of the better D's in the area this season. They return 9 starters and have a young Dillion that will have an impact in the secondary.

Pikeville will have a solid front 7, but again, like last year, I worry about their secondary. They return a few starters from the secondary but still their ability to stop the pass is questionable. I believe they still will have trouble with teams like NCC that can air it out but wont hurt them much throughout the season as most teams around here run primarily or, if they pass, they are extremely weak at it.

IMO....Belfry and Pikeville should have good defenses. Just as good or better than last year.

As a former Pirate, I gotta go with the boys in red. Belfry always turns out tough, disciplined defenses who aren't shy around the ballcarrier. I just wish I could get back out in the trenches for 'em.
Pikeville should be tough next year, too. Despite getting blown out when we played them last year, they showed flashes of being very good. If they can just stop giving up the big play, I think they'll be tough...especially with that linebacking corps they have.

Ashland has some playmakers on D but they also need a solid supporting cast. They lost a lot along the line and return 1 of 4 LB's. Almost the whole secondary returns, but upfront they may be hurting a little, unless a few players step up big.

I watched the NCC and Belfry game and they just simply ran into better team both nights. NCC speed killed Pikeville more than anything. They were some quick cats. But Pikeville is older now and should be better and have a solid defense. Also Belfry will be tuff on defense. This meeting at Pikeville between Belfry and Pikeville will be one of the better games we seen in a while. Coach J is doing a good job for Pikeville. The only complaint I had was he tried to much trickory. A well disiplined team like Belfry dont by that garbage and it costed them alot that game. They would have gave a much better game if they would have lined up and simply mixed it up and not do all the tricks.

It defintley isnt bad news but Im sure Ashland will be tuff as always. Belfry will have one of the better Defenses this year. This (like the Pikeville game) should be another classic game between two great rivarlies. All of Belfry has alot of respect for the Ashland program.

If Coach Matney is smart, he will leave Welch at Safety:thumpsup:

All of Ashland respects Belfrys team as well. It should be a classic matchup of EKY powers. I am looking forward to it!

Pikeville will have one of the best linebacker corps they have had in a long time this year with Mayo and the Honaker twins...their secondary has to improve though.

He would be on the bench by the way some of these people think Dillon will come in and be a God in the secondary!

I think Jim Matney knows what he's doing don't you? Both Dillon and Welch will contribute this year but both needs to work harder in the off season. No one is portraying Dillon as a " God in the secondary" on here although I do think if he works hard he will be a dandy. I think the same about Ian Welch. I think highly of both these boys as I do the whole team. You need to let coach Matney do the decision making and you stick to the cheering. Our football team doesn't need the type of negativity that your trying to stir up with your posts on this topic.

I'm not trying to stir up any negativity. I'm just saying, by the way Welch played as a Freshmen, he will be one helluva safety this year.

Yes, I am back. and i can assure you that the front seven from pikeville will have no problem stopping the run.....and dont worry about teh secondary....the WR's cant catch it if the QB cant throw it......thats exactly whut pikeville D-line has been working on this whole offseason. Dont even get me started on the strength jumps.....with all four of the D-line squating over 400 and the two interior Linemen: Bryant & Rowe squating well over 500+..........all im saying is look out for some more goose eggs this season

ashlands 4 d-linemen and 1 linebacker squat 500 pounds

That may work against some teams but take a Henry Clay team for example, not going to work. They will have a bunch of goose eggs because they play in a mediocre (sp.) at best district. It's great they are trying to improve the pass rush, but you wont be able to get the sack everytime and relying on that isnt the best idea. I, STILL, see Pikeville having some balls fly over their heads.
