Warren East 43 - Franklin-Simpson 0
#1
The Warren East football team matched a school record for the most wins in a row with a 43-0 trouncing of Franklin-Simpson on Friday at Warren East High School.
Warren East racked up 448 yards of offense, including 320 in the air, and held the Wildcats to 66 total yards to improve to 7-0 for the first time since 2007. The seven-game winning streak equals the school record.
“Any time you beat Franklin-Simpson, that is a great win for your program,” WE coach Ben Bruni said. “They are a storied, traditional program. They have as much success as anyone in southcentral Kentucky. They play hard. They have great kids. I was happy to get out of here with a win.”

In the district opener for both schools, Warren East came out firing.

The Raiders fumbled near midfield on the first possession, but quarterback Jimmy Burns quickly got the offense in gear with 238 yards and four touchdown passes in the first half.

Burns found Timmy Stockton for a 22-yard strike to start the scoring midway through the first quarter and added a 29-yard pass down the seam to Khyree Boards to make it 15-0 late in the first quarter.

Burns threw second-quarter touchdowns of 41 yards to Christian Flores and 59 yards to Boards, helping Warren East build a 29-0 lead.

“People have been talking about our defense lately,” Burns said. “Our offense wanted to step up and have a big game this week. We scored 43. The defense had a great game. You can’t ask for anything else.”

Warren East added a pair of touchdown runs in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

Burns finished the night 16-for-23 for 320 yards, completing passes to six receivers.

“Sometimes you are a running team and sometimes you are a passing team,” Bruni said. “I felt like our quarterback was in a groove, so we were going to let him run with it. There towards the end of the game he was pretty much calling plays on his own. Sometimes we just step back and let good players be good.”

That was more than enough offense for the WE defense. The Raiders held Franklin (1-6, 0-1) to six first downs and allowed the Wildcats into Warren East territory four times in 13 drives.

Warren East forced two turnovers and recorded its sixth safety in the last three weeks. It was the second shutout of the season for the Raiders, and fifth time they’ve held an opponent to seven points or fewer.

“Coach (Steve) Long does such a great job with our defense,” Bruni said. “I keep repeating his name every week because he has done so much for our program. All that you have to do is look at seven games, 48 points given up. He’s a pretty special coach.”

Boards added 66 yards rushing for the Raiders, while Chris Holman had 59 yards on 17 carries to lead the Wildcats.

Both teams will take the week off before returning to action Oct. 12. Franklin-Simpson will host Breckinridge County, while Warren East will travel to Allen County-Scottsville.
