Eastern 35 Male 21
#1
Final
#2
It didn’t take long for the visiting Eastern Eagles to proclaim themselves ready to end their four-game losing streak to Male.

Shane Fields fielded the opening pooch kick on one bounce at the 15-yard line and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown to lead a 35-point first-half onslaught that was all Eastern needed in a 35-21 victory Friday night.

The Eagles (5-1) limited the Bulldogs (4-2) to 10 rushing yards on 27 carries and outgained them 303-173 overall. They also were able to overcome 120 yards of penalties and two fumbles.

Male tried to counter after Fields’ electrifying play. The Bulldogs returned the ensuing kickoff to the Eastern 30, but five plays later Fields recovered a fumble at the 1 to thwart the drive.

Male’s special teams then made amends for the opening kickoff when Breshawn Phillips recovered a mishandled snap by Eastern punter Michael Bryar at the 2. Four plays later Marque Northington tied it with a 2-yard touchdown run up the middle with 6:13 remaining in the first quarter.

Things seemed to settle down as Eastern went three-and-out and Male missed a 25-yard field-goal try, but the teams then combined for 28 points in the next 14 minutes.

On the first play following the missed field-goal attempt, Eastern scored on an 80-yard pass from Cody Wolfe to Tre Harrison. Three plays later Harrison struck again, intercepting Male quarterback Tyler Erny’s pass — it was tipped by wide receiver Nathan Case — and returning it 4 yards to the Bulldogs’ 30.

Eastern soon extended its lead to 21-7 on a 4-yard run by Aaron Nix. The Eagles then recovered a fumbled snap at the Male 45, but they went three-and-out and Phillips blocked the punt at the 35 and returned it for a touchdown to cut the lead to 21-14.

Eastern scored two more second-quarter touchdowns, the first on Wolfe’s 1-yard keeper with 5:25 left and the second on Nix’s 27-yard run with 2:20 to go in the half.

Male’s Jeromy Williams returned the second-half kickoff 92 yards for a TD, but penalties prevented both teams from scoring the rest of the third quarter.

Male threatened late in the game, but Harrison picked off Erny’s pass with 16 seconds left to seal it.
