LATEST FATALITY TIES STATE TOTALS FOR '04, '05

By Lee Mueller

EASTERN KENTUCKY BUREAU

A Harlan County man yesterday became the second Kentucky coal miner in two days to be killed in an underground accident, tying the state's total for mine fatalities for each of the last two years.

After a record low of 22 coal-mining fatalities in the United States last year, there already have been 26 mining deaths during the first four months of 2006, said Amy Louviere, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration.

"And we're not even halfway through the year yet," she said.

Rick McKnight, 45, of Cumberland was crushed to death between mining equipment deep inside Lone Mountain Processing Inc.'s Huff Creek No. 1 mine at Holmes Mill, Louviere said.

McKnight was killed about 14 hours after David Chad Bolen, 28, of Harold was killed in Pike County.
