Frank Wright, the girlsâ basketball coach at South Oldham High School the past eight seasons, has accepted the same position at Ballard.
Wright replaces Steve Kaufman, who stepped down after five seasons with the Lady Bruins.
âItâs a great challenge,â the 56-year-old Wright said of moving from the Eighth Region to the Seventh Region. âYou need something to keep you fresh when youâre an old guy like me, and Iâm looking forward to that. Iâve been here eight years now, and Iâve never been anywhere that long.â
Wright posted a 159-75 record at South Oldham, where he was the regional runner-up twice (2007 and 2012). His 2011-12 squad finished 27-5 after falling to Walton-Verona in the regional final.
Before taking the South Oldham job, Wright coached mostly in Indiana but also was the boysâ coach at Mercer County for five seasons.
Heâll inherit a Ballard team that finished 22-10 last season after falling to Sacred Heart in the first round of the Seventh Region Tournament.
Ballard should return two of the regionâs top players in Javonna Layfield and Alex Martin, and Tearra Banks is expected to be eligible after transferring from Shawnee.
âTheyâll have to share the ball and learn a new system,â Wright said. âIt will be a learning experience for coaches and players alike, but it should be a good one.â
South Oldham athletic director Mitchell Irvin said the school is accepting applications for Wrightâs replacement. The applicant must be a certified teacher. For more information contact Irvin at (502) 241-6035 or mitchell.irvin@oldham.kyschools.us.

Yes they are. They should be pretty good next year with all of the talent they have coming back.
