Sophomore shortstop Jared Williams tied the score with a triple in the bottom of the sixth and scored the eventual winning run on junior third baseman Blake Mainesâ sacrifice fly in Connerâs 6-5 win against Newport Central Catholic on Monday in Hebron.
The Thoroughbreds had taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the inning on three singles by Colin Dupont, Dominic Pangallo, and Josh Cain.
Junior centerfielder Cameron Fogle doubled in the bottom of the sixth and scored on Williamsâ line drive triple to right-center field. Maines followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Cougars ahead.
Maines also earned a save, coming in with one out in the top of the seventh and runners on first and second to end the game with a strikeout and a fly out.
Maines was the Cougars third pitcher of the game, following junior lefty Brady Smiley, who struck out six in fourth innings, and winning pitcher Austin Price.
Conner had led 2-0 early with the help of an RBI double Maines in the first inning, but a solo home run by Andy Miller in the fourth helped NewCath tie the score in the fourth, and the Thoroughbreds were able to move ahead in the fifth.
