Junior catcher Kevin Hoffstedder’s single drove in the winning run in the eighth inning as Newport Central Catholic edged Lloyd, 4-3 in the first round of the Region 9 All ‘A’ Tournament on Wednesday.

With no outs in the bottom of the eighth, Hoffstedder’s base hit up the middle scored junior pitcher Josh Cain.

Thoroughbreds senior center fielder Nick Woltermann belted a single down the left field line that scored two runs in the bottom of the third to give NewCath a 2-1 lead.

Lloyd erased a two-run deficit in the top of the seventh, and the Juggernauts had runners at second and third with no outs. But NewCath recorded a strikeout, Lloyd failed on a suicide squeeze and a ground out ended the inning.

The Juggernauts threatened again in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with one out, but Cain struck out the last two hitters.
