Just curious.... Who were some good teams in the past or present in which all 5 starters actually came from a feeder system to the school they represented in the tournament?

Scott County's 2007 state championship team had no transfers. All the kids played in the Scott Co feeder system. This is the only team in KY to go undefeated against KY high schools since 1949.

Can you name the 5 starters from that 2007 team?

I would say the Shelby Valley team.

I dont want to get in an argument with SV posters but one of the players was brought in as a grade schooler. I know all legal but he was a good player on the Phelps grade team as a 5th and 6th? grader aqnd he was asked to move to SV where he had relatives living. Before there is a flood of denials I know his Dad personally and was told by him Yes they asked him to come to play ball.

I was under the impression, a kid could pick what ever high school he wanted to, but ever which one he chose was his home school from then on, thats the way it is in Letcher County, Im pretty sure.......someone correct me if I am wrong!

You missed my point Someone said SV all homegrown I didnt say anything was fishy I guess its your definition of homegrown. 5 or 6 years at phelps and move to sv is not my definition of homegrown. It may be yours So be it

LOL, I think all this has been funny following this sites infatuation and issues with transfers. Give me a state champion and I don't care if all five members came from Afghanistan, Iran and South Korea! Who cares if they are home grown or not! Sour grapes!

I can't. I know that Jimmy Warren, Bud Mackey, and Matt Walls started. They had a 6'7" kid that started. I remember he outplayed Patrick Patterson when they went head to head.

Did the Shelby Valley team have a big kid transfer from Pikeville or was that the year after?

A kid that moves in before high school is not considered a transfer.

I kind of agree. If you build a good enough program, kids will find you. You wont need to recruit.

I guess if you are on the receiving end of all the transfers then it's all good... IMO the whole transfer thing has gotten out of hand. All I have heard as of late is how someone heard this kid is transferring here and this kid is transferring there.
03-18-2012, 10:41 PM
I never had a problem with transfers..A kid can go anywhere they want..The only thing thats ever bothered me was when players for instance lived in Elkhorn city but drove to school in another county just to play ball..I never thought that was right..
If a school gets a good transfer and its legit then good for them..

This is not about recruiting, but your thoughts are still dead-on. If you build a good enough program, then everyone will find you! Let's be real, families uproot and move, whether it is for education or other, they do it! It's not against the rules. If you are a school that graduates 98% of your students, 80% of those students go on to college, and 70% of those students qualify for some level of academic gifts, would anyone cry like they do over the stupid whining we have seen on this message board about students transferring to other schools????

I do coach. I have not been on the "transferred to" side yet. Have I coached against schools that do? Yes! Do I care? NO!!!!!!!!!!!:Shaking:

^ I wasn't saying that as in YOU, but just as a general statement that the folks that have received the transfers feel it is all good, but those who don't are up in arms about it.
I think it is all fine and dandy if you transfer, but feel you truly should transfer and not just establish an address in the school district you wish to play.

Some schools would shit their pants if it was mandatory that your high school players be part of your school system since grade school or theyd be ineligble.
Half the state championship teams of the past wouldnt have won :hilarious:

The big kid was Devan Adams and he transferred there the year before as a Senior so he wasn't on the team when they won the championship.

None were transfers. Some moved there while in elementary or middle school.

Moved/Transferred, same thing. Trent Gilbert started for Wolfe County as an 8th Grader. He was the 2nd leading scorer on Wolfe County behind Sawyer Denniston that year and many thought that he would be better than Sawyer as he progressed which I believe he is. They also beat Breathitt for the District title that year as well. Point is, Gilbert is not a product of Scott County's feeder schools.

Knott County is definitely the best homegrown team.
I'm assuming all players came from their feeder system since they trash everyone else with transfers
Can someone please confirm that?
I would hate to be wrong

I could care less where the kids come from as long as they are academically eligible and can play, nothing else matters. Who cares where they grew up or where they went to grade school, it's no big deal. If a 6'9" kid moves in and is not from around here, do you think that Mr. Smith's 5'9" little johnny power forward is going to start over the new kid just because he grew up around here? heck no and why should he? Just play the best you got and see what happens, the only people who care are the parents whose kids aren't good enough to play and gets a couple of their minutes taken anyways. That is all this is about anyways. If little johnny is not good enough to play, just hope he can fill up the water bottles or he can start cheerleading.

Did he better himself by moving? Did his team make it to the state championship game? did wolfe county? nuff Said! I have no problem with a kid or their parents trying to better their situation if it's in their best interest. That is all that matters anyways. :Cheerlead

The KHSAA doesn't consider an elementary or middle school kid a transfer, even if he played a high school sport.

Whether the kid has to be ruled eligible, whether he does it in 8th grade, or whether he sits out a year and has to wait it out.
But the bottom line is....
you still gotta scout em...
and you still gotta play em.
If this topic never came up on this board again all of our lives would be better.
What happens if a guy moves from a few states over and takes the promotion that you were looking to get. He's got more experience, done your job on a greater scale, and he's overall more qualified for the position....
Does that mean he's less of an employee because he isn't "homegrown"?
