While Ron Dawnâs girlsâ basketball teams at Newport Central Catholic didnât do much losing over his four seasons as coach, the effect those losses began taking on Dawn led him to announce his retirement at the teamâs banquet last night.
Dawn, 56, compiled a 91-24 record in his four seasons as girlsâ coach and led the Thoroughbreds to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Ninth Region championship in 2011 and to a runner-up finish in 2009. He also led them to the Touchstone Energy All âAâ Classic state championship in 2010 and a runner-up finish this past season, when they finished with a 19-11 record and lost in the first round of the KHSAA Ninth Region Tournament.
He also had successful stints as a boysâ coach at St. Henry and then NewCath, where he guided the 1999-2000 team to the KHSAA Ninth Region championship and to the All âAâ Classic state championship.
He is the only coach in state history to guide teams to both the boysâ and girlsâ KHSAA state tournaments and to championships in both the boysâ and girlsâ All âAâ Classic state tournaments.
Dawn, who resigned as NewCathâs boysâ coach after the 2000-01 season so he could watch his son Ronny play college basketball and didnât coach again until being hired as the schoolâs girlsâ coach before the 2008-09 season, earned his 400th career win on Feb. 3 and finished the season with 403 career victories.
Despite all of his success Dawn said it was in early January where he came to realize how hard it was becoming to put losses behind him.
âI just have a hard time letting them go,â he said. âIt eats away at you, at least it does to me. The kids were great, but it just got frustrating to me.â
NewCath athletic director Rob Detzel, who succeeded Dawn as NewCathâs boysâ coach before he stepped aside following the 2005-06 season, said he admires what Dawn has accomplished.
âTo do it successfully is one thing, but to do it ultra-successfully as both a boysâ coach and then a girlsâ coach is simply amazing,â said Detzel. âIt just goes to show how great a coach he is.â
Dawn is not retiring as a teacher at NewCath and said he will be around to offer any help his replacement may need. George Stoll has been named the new coach. Stoll, 24, is a 2006 NewCath graduate and has been an assistant girlsâ coach for the past four years.
Dawn said he will use his time to watch his three grandchildren, who are in the fifth, third and first grade, play sports and to, âget back in shape.â
He said he hasnât completely ruled out returning to coaching and may even coach an AAU team.

Stoll has big shoes to fill at Newport Central Catholic
It’s not entirely akin to Joe B. Hall replacing Adolph Rupp or Gene Bartow replacing John Wooden or even Mike Davis replacing Bob Knight, but on the local high school basketball level, George Stoll knows he’s stepping into some big shoes when he replaces Ron Dawn as Newport Central Catholic girls’ basketball coach.
Dawn announced his retirement at the team’s banquet Sunday and the 24-year-old Stoll was named as his replacement.
Stoll is a 2006 NewCath graduate and coached with Dawn for four years.
“I know I have big shoes to fill, but I’m more excited than anything else,” said Stoll, who played at NewCath for current athletic director Rob Detzel. “It doesn’t scare me, because I know with the administration everyone’s in my corner with it. Mr. Dawn and Mr. Detzel really pulled for me.”
Stoll began his coaching career his first year in college at Northern Kentucky University as eighth-grade coach at St. Joseph’s Cold Spring.
“I fell in love with it,” he said. “That’s when I knew I wanted to keep on going in this direction, and didn’t know if it would take me in the direction of girls or boys.”
Stoll is finishing his teaching certification, which he expects to do before next school year and will allow him to teach at the middle school levelhttp://nky.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AB/20120312/SPT0302/303120165/
