HENDERSON, Ky. — Ellie Fruit scored a career-high 29 points to help Henderson County cruise to a 73-55 victory Saturday afternoon over defending First Region champion Calloway County in a preview of a possible first-round state tournament matchup.

Fruit, whose game has developed beyond being just a long-range shooter, racked up her points despite making just three 3-point shots.

"It has been a focus this year on driving to the basket. I need to work on other ways to score. My 3-pointers will always be there," said Fruit, who scored 17 points in the first half to help the Lady Colonels open up a 39-25 halftime lead.

"She's continued to diversify her game," Henderson County coach Jeff Haile said. "To play at the next level, she had to be able to do more than just be a shooter."

Fruit's previous career-high was 23, scored against Clarksville Northwest, Tenn., during her freshman season at Calloway County's holiday tournament.

"Ellie probably had one of the better games of her career. She was able to beat her defender and get to the hole," Haile said. "(Breya) Cooper was the same way."

Cooper added 18 points, including 12 in the first half, as she, too, repeatedly attacked the basket.

"We really thought she had an advantage on her defender," Haile said.

The Lady Colonels' overall quickness advantage was evident on both ends of the floor. "When we pressure them all game like this, it really gets in their heads," Fruit said.

"We tried to get them out of their comfort zone. We couldn't let their post player (Alyssa Cunningham) get the ball on the block," Haile said.

Henderson County blitzed the Lady Lakers with a 17-6 run to start the game, and Calloway County was never closer than seven points the rest of the way.

The Lady Lakers committed 13 turnovers in the first half and trailed 39-25 at the break.

They had 23 turnovers for the game.

After trailing by 19, Calloway did close the margin to 54-41 late in the third quarter before Fruit ended the period with a 3-pointer and a 15-foot jumper to end the period.

Summer Simmons led Calloway County (17-8) with 14 points. Karlee Wilson scored 13 and Taylor Futrell added 12.

Brooke Tapp added 13 points for Henderson County, which won its 12th straight game to improve to 19-2. Tapp also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

If both teams win their respective region tournaments, Henderson County and Calloway County would meet in the first round of the state tournament March 8.

Henderson County won the junior varsity game, 44-19, to improve to 13-2. Taylor Polivick led the scoring with 12 points, while Brooklyn Williams added 8.

The Lady Colonels will host McLean County on Thursday in a late addition to the team's schedule.
