Bell Co vs. Middlesboro
#1
Does anyone have a score on this girls game last night? The boys game was posted on the KHSAA, but I couldn't find the ladies' score.

The Bell County Lady Cats hit five 3-pointers and made 22 of 29 free throws Friday night as they outdistanced the Middlesboro Lady Jackets 67-51.

“Both teams played hard and both gave a lot of energy,” said Bell coach David Teague. “We got into a little bit of foul trouble early and had to make a few adjustments. I was proud of our kids. We battled and put four pretty good quarters together.”

Freshman forward Maci Morris lit Middlesboro up for 31 points in the teams earlier meeting this season. Friday the Lady Jackets held somewhat in check as she finished with 18 points. Sophomore guard Morgan Garnett also scored 18 for the Lady Cats while senior Makayla Neal added 13.

8th-grader Anajae Stephney led Middlesboro with 21 points and senior guard Ashley Mason added 15, but the Lady Jackets just weren’t able to keep up scoring-wise with Bell County.

“When we needed a stop on defense a few times we just couldn’t get it,” said MHS coach Elgie Green. “They were able to drive to the basket on us. They hit some threes, we were out in guarding distance but didn’t get up in their face. They were just a better team than we were tonight.”

Garnett and Morris hit early 3s and combined for 12 first quarter points. Middlesboro got a 3 from Mason, who scored five of her points in the opening period. Stephney also had a basket while Emily Pannocchia and Bailey Hensley hit two free throws each. The Lady Cats also got baskets from Neal, Paige Robbins and Jessica Sanders and led 18-11 after one quarter.

The Lady Jackets tried to make a run in the second quarter as Stephney scored nine of her points in the period and Mason knocked down another 3. But Garnett hit three shots for six points and Neal and Morris both converted three-point plays for Bell. The Lady Cats got into some foul trouble in the period, but were able to maintain their lead thanks in part to baskets off the bench from Kelli Smith and Jamie Boatright. By halftime Bell’s lead was 36-26.

“The kids that came in all played well I’m really proud of them,” Teague added. “They did some things defensively, knocked down some shots, rebounded the basketball and gave us some very good minutes.”

Mason hit her third 3 of the night in the third quarter for the Lady Jackets. She scored five in the period and Stephney added four. Rayann Moyers and Taylor Prater also had baskets for Middlesboro, but Bell answered nearly every time.

Neal hit a pair of 3s and Morris scored eight points in the third as the Lady Cat lead grew to 56-40.

“Our shot selection I didn’t think was real good. There were some things we talked about before the game and at halftime that we just couldn’t seem to do,” Green said.

The Lady Cats hit 9 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter as they went on the 16-point win. Garnett was 9 of 10 from the stripe in the game and Morris hit six of eight.

“Morgan shot the ball well tonight and made free throws. You know Morgan’s our second leading scorer right now and she’s capable of scoring in a lot of ways,” Teague said. “She and Maci both made shots and did a good job of attacking the basket and finishing and making free throws.”

The win puts the Lady Cats into a three-way tie for first place in the 52nd District standings. Bell, Harlan and Harlan County are all 4-2 and seeding for the district tournament will be determined by coin flips on Monday.
