Baseball America is out with its Prospects Handbook. Itâs a great read if youâre into following the minors. Here are the Redsâ top 30 (notice five them are gone):
1. C Devin Mesoraco: Rates as a 65 on the scouting scale â thatâs a perennial all-star.
2. INF Billy Hamilton: Probably the fastest player in baseball. Probably still two to three years away.
3. 1B Yonder Alonso: Traded.
4. C Yasmani Grandal: Traded.
5. SS Zack Cozart: Dusty Baker called him the most complete player heâs gotten out of the Redsâ system.
6. RHP Daniel Corcino: Johnny Cueto-lite. Similar build to Cueto, similar numbers at Dayton. Corcino throws a bit harder than Cueto did at a similar age.
7. RHP Robert Stephenson: Last yearâs top pick. Hasnât played a game professionally yet.
8. SS Didi Gregorius: Reached Double-A last year and hit .270. BA rates his ceiling higher than Cozartâs.
9. INF/OF Todd Frazier: Will battle for a roster spot with the Reds this spring. Hit .232 in 112 at-bats with the Reds.
10. RHP Brad Boxberger: Traded.
11. 1B Neftali Soto: Hit 31 home runs last year, first Redsâ minor leaguer to reach 30 since Adam Dunn in 2001. Soto did it despite missing a month with a broken left wrist.
12. RHP J.C. Sulbaran: Great stuff, but so-so numbers so far. Went 9-6 with a 4.60 ERA at high A Bakersfield last year.
13. 2B Ronald Torreyes: Traded.
14. OF Ryan LaMarre: Second-rounder in 2010. Stole 55 bases last year.
15. LHP Tony Cingrani: Third rounder in 2011. Went 3-2 with a 1.75 ERA at Billings.
16. OF Dave Sappelt: Traded.
17. 2B Henry Rodriguez: Hit .340 at Bakersfield and .302 at Carolina.
18. LHP Amir Garrett: Heâs currently playing basketball with St. Johnâs. Throws up to 95.
19. OF Yorman Rodriguez: Great tools. Was one of only three 18-year-olds to play in the Midwest League last year.
20. 3B Gabriel Rosa: Second rounder in 2011.
21. INF Chris Valaika: Coming off knee surgery. Has an outside shot at making the Reds.
22. OF Kyle Waldrop: Signed to play football with South Florida before Reds signed him for $500,000.
23. 2B Ryan Wright: Hit .298 with seven home runs in 161 at-bats for Billings.
24. 3B Sean Buckley: Son of Reds scouting director Chris Buckley. Hit .289 with 14 homers and 41 RBI in 225 at-bats at Billings.
25. C Tucker Barnhart: Very good defensively. Could end up backing up Mesoraco down the line.
26. 3B David Vidal: Hit .280 with 20 homers and 85 RBI for Dayton last year.
27. LHP Donnie Joseph: Third rounder in 2009. Had a rough year last year â 1-3, 6.94 ERA at Double-A.
28. OF Juan Duran: Signed for $2 million at 16. Great raw power. Strikes out a ton.
29. RHP Jonathan Perez: Signed for $825,000 out of Venezuela. Only 16.
30. RHP Kyle Lotzkar: Supplemental first rounder in 2007. Troubled by injuries. Hs struck out 11 batters per nine innings in the minors.
