Ballard 81 Manual 79
#1
Lavonne Holland and an untimely timeout saved the Ballard High School boys’ basketball team Friday night.

Holland’s layup with 3.2 seconds to go gave the Bruins, No. 3 in The Courier-Journal Litkenhous Ratings, an 81-79 lead against 11th-ranked Manual.

What followed was heartache for the Crimsons. After a series of timeouts, senior guard Bryan Repishti hit a half-court shot with 1.2 seconds to go, seemingly giving Manual an 82-81 lead. But Manual had called a timeout just before the shot, and the 3-pointer was disallowed. When play resumed, Repishti tried another 3-pointer that missed.

“The second shot was better-looking than the first shot,” Manual coach Jimmy Just said. “The timeout ... well, we didn’t get the pass we wanted and we thought hopefully we’d get a better shot (after the timeout). When they blew the whistle, Bryan was approaching midcourt. Everybody might have stopped a little, but (Repishti) took one more step and hit it.”

Manual (11-5) had rallied from a 65-55 deficit to tie the score at 79 with 49 seconds left. Then Holland, a junior guard who led the Bruins (10-5) with 26 points, came through. He got support from Kelan Martin with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Quentin Snider with 15 points.

Repishti led Manual with 17 points.
