Bishop Brossart is taking at least one year off from wrestling after being unable to hire a head coach. The Mustangs, who sent two wrestlers to last season's state tournament, are in evaluation mode with regard to the sport's future.
"We had no intention of not having a wrestling team this year, but we struggled finding a qualified coach who is the right fit," Brossart athletic director Mel Webster said. "There were a lot of other factors involved."
Clint Bell resigned as Brossart wrestling coach to take the position of assistant at Conner, where Bell also teaches.
"We didn't have a teacher's position open so it had to be para-professional," Webster said. "We need 13 or 14 kids to wrestle but we only had five or six who were coming back. A lot of them play football, and there needs to be cooperation between the football coach and the wrestling coach."
Webster said that with the addition of boys' and girls' bowling, Brossart is holding steady at 17 sports. "We have about 365 kids at the school and about 270 of them compete in sports," Webster said. "The question becomes, for a small school, are we oversaturated with the number of sports we have. There's just not that many kids to go around."
Bowling has proved more popular at Brossart. There are eight boys' bowlers (and 12 girls). So far as wrestling's future, Webster said, "We're open to restarting it next year if there is sufficient interest."
Webster will continue accepting applications for the wrestling head coach position. "I would love it if somebody qualified would give me a call and say they'll coach," he said.

^ I've got to say that the attitude of all places, Campbell County, has changed on Wrestling. The new football coach, though he can't admit to it, has had an influence on guys not going back to Wrestling. Guys who wrestled over the past few years are now committing to football workouts this winter....

I hate seeing kids have to pick one sport at such an early age!

Wrestling improves kids in every other sport. Balance, power, conditioning, discipline, and mental toughness. If anything coaches should be loving them wrestling in the off season.
Khsaa study says numbers are actually on the rise for wrestling numbers.

I do think it is a shame that kids are often restricted to a single sport. My daughter is a cheerleader and we cheer and practice 10 months out of the year. It is almost impossible for her to do anything else. I don't agree with the Football teams being allowed to basically practice/condition year round when they get a huge budget for the months they play.
