Pendleton Co. 55 Cooper 42

Too much Mason Monroe for Pendleton County and not enough answers for Cooper conspired against the Jaguars during Friday's 55-42 home loss to the streaking Wildcats.

Pendleton County (6-1) won its sixth in a row while riding the hot hand of Monroe, who poured in a game-high 25 points, 15 in the second half. Cooper (3-3), ranked tied for 10th in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, has lost three of its last four.

"Monroe is one of the best guards in the 10th Region and Pendleton County has a good team, and we've got one returning guy who played significant minutes last year, so this is something we can build on," Cooper coach Tim Sullivan said. "We're trying to replace a lot, so the maturity isn't there yet."

A pair of baskets by Monroe and two of his free throws helped put the Wildcats on top 14-8 en route to a 20-9 first-quarter lead. Pendleton's full-court pressure flustered the Jaguars into a spate of early turnovers. A score by Ethan Moore in the opening minute of the second quarter opened up a 13-point Pendleton lead.

From there, the teams traded scoring runs. The Jaguars' 11-4 sprint pulled them to within 26-20 just before halftime. Monroe's basket in transition gave the Wildcats a 28-20 lead at the break. Cooper opened a 7-0 second-half run on Louis Maniacci's alley-oop dunk off a feed from A.J. Collins and rallied to within 28-27.

"That was by design; it just depends on if it's open or not," said Collins, who led Cooper with 12 points. "I put it up there for Louis and it sparked us."

Monroe, a 5-foot-9 left-handed junior, put the brakes on the Jaguars' run by scoring seven unanswered points and 11 of the next 14 for the Wildcats, who closed the third quarter with a 42-36 lead. Monroe, already in the 1,000-point club at Pendleton, hit the first basket of the fourth. A 7-0 Wildcats run put them ahead, 51-39.

"We didn't sit on his left hand," Collins said of Monroe, who is averaging 21 points per game. "Plus, he's got an amazing pull-up jumper. He just knocked down shots."

Andrew Antrobus added 10 points for Pendleton County. Gabe Antrobus, who entered play averaging 16 points, was held to three. Senior Alex Webster, the lone returning starter for Cooper, scored 11. Maniacci, a 6-7 junior center, finished with eight points.

"We were down, so I like it that we didn't give up," Webster said. "They took off the press because we were finally able to beat it."

Coach Sullivan said his squad could have caved in to the Wildcats' pressure in the second quarter after falling behind 22-9. The fact the Jaguars played Pendleton even the rest of the way offered some consolation.

"We're not going to use the fact it's just our fourth year with a program as an excuse. We're trying to build it," Sullivan said. "We talk about grinding it out, and that's all that was. That's what I was impressed with after 22-9. In the past, we might have folded."
