Are there any current football schools that will disappear in the near future? The number of football schools seems to be ever shrinking with closings, consolidations, etc... Is any school on the radar to disappear? There's been some good football schools that no longer exist. Cawood, Lynch East Main, Bishop David, just to name a few. Who's next on the list?

yes ..... in the west Lone Oak Heath and reidland will all disappear so there is three more gone........ BUT .....BUT they are all three coming together to form what could be the team of the west to beat.... They should be 6a and LO's Jack H. should get the job as coaching.... this should happen in 2013 .. they have already bought the land and its a done deal......Welcome McCracken County High School in the near future...it will be fun seeing what they can become..:pondering:

If they are 5A they could be dominant. 6A, they have no chance.

Allen Central and South Floyd?

Hint: Fulton City and Fulton County should consolidate. Even after the merger, it would still probably be a 1A school. What a huge waste of taxpayer dollars to fund and operate two very small schools in a county with a disappearing population base. Makes no sense whatsoever.

Allen Central and SF are consolidating from what I've heard, but I don't know why you wouldn't throw BL in that, too.

Hopefully Brossart and NCC combine. Or they just close NCC. Both are land locked and in dire need of decent facilities.

that was actually in the works a LOOONG time ago. School would've been located across the street from St. Joe's Cold Springs. However, neither school wanted any part of it and still don't.
If they did merge though, they still wouldn't play Highlands

There is a very small rumor going on that Campbell County and Kentucky are trying to get Newport, Bellevue, and Dayton merged into one school. They would call it Campbell North, I would call it Cluster**** High School because it would be a disaster.

Most in the BL school district would be closer to P'burg.

Don't be surprised in Newport becomes Campbell North and they take some students out of Campbell County and put them there. Campbell is growing and something will be done with Newport. I don't know about the Dayton, Bellevue part. But, I think the part about Newport and Campbell North has merit. We'll see.

If Trinity stays on the roll they have been on, you're right. However, I can think of a lot of schools class 1A-5A that never have had a chance and never will have a chance, in the grand scheme of things.
I think this McCracken County High School could end up being very similar to Henderson County and Scott County. You're talking about a school that will start out of the gates with right around 2,000 kids and I think they fully realize there will be growth, so, if this McCracken County High School becomes one of these 2,500-3,000 population high schools (like many down south and in texas), then they will definately have a chance in due time.
Remember, it was only two short years ago that Shelby County was still one, and they took Trinity to what I believe was a 14 or 21 point game in the region finals. Imagine what would have been in 5 years had Shelby County dumped all of the money that they put into a new school and facilities, and into the Curren Shelby County High School/facilities?
Another new school beginning next year will be Thomas Nelson High School in Nelson County. They are splitting Nelson County High School up.

I would like to see more reverse consolidation occur. Big schools are cheaper to operate but now near as good for the students.
11-03-2011, 08:44 AM
This isnt a eample of consolidation, instead a new school.
In Laurel County, theyve been talking about opening up a new high school in the county called West Laurel i believe.
Its been talked about for a while now, but North and South Laurel are overcrowded and they are two of the biggest schools in 5A.
If a new school opens, you could see 3 3A or 4A teams going at it and IMO one of them will get all of the athletes and dominate smaller schools in lower classes.

I am all in favor of it being 3 4A teams. Make a new district of West, North and South Laurel and Rock. If there has to be 5 teams, then drop Whitley County to 4A. Talk about saving money on gas in a tough economy.

No doubt, id love that, maybe even move bell back up and have a six team district. that would be AWESOME.
You know how Laurel county is though, they'd redistrict it to where on of the schools magically get all of the athletes lol jk.
South always seemed to get the athletes back in the day and while North actually has more kids, has lacked the success that South has had especially in basketball and baseball.
i to agree that now a days, the more money you save the better and that would be saving money big time.
man i miss our old district...

That tends to happen....
I remember when Laurel County split i was still realitvely young, however, i had family that attend Laurel County Schools.
I remember when it split, South got all of the athletes, rich kids, and money and all North got was a new school since south just kept the old Laurel County high school.
I for one always though London should of had a city school. This would have take the capacity down quite a bit, however, north and South laurel are both inside city limits lol.

^Laurel County would be scary dominant if they had a 6A Laurel County school and a 1A or 2A London High School.
Could you imagine if they put all the money and athletes in the London school?

The 6A school couldn't win the Class A title right now. How they going to win it with less?
11-03-2011, 10:34 PM
^Put North Laurel and South Laurel together and they can seriously contend for the 1A title, I guarantee it. Couldn't be combined until 2014 anyway, so we are not talking about right now.

No they could not, Combined NL SL couldn't beat Beechwood or Mayfield in 1A. Those schools currently struggle when they play smallerschools and have never ever won with any regularity.
As far as someones comment that they could make 3 dominat 3A teams, REALLY? They cant beat Bell 3A, Corbin 3A, Breathitt 3A, Rock 4A, Knox 4A, Belfry 3A, Somerset 2A or Danville 2A on a regular basis now, what makes any one think they could if they were smaller?

Allen Central & South Floyd are expected to consolidate in the near future. The school will be located in Minnie and I also don't know why Betsy Layne also isn't going to consolidate with them either, as the new highway they're building will go right through both communities.
Would be nice to see Prestonsburg become a independent school once it's all said and done.

I don't think there's been a new independent school district created in decades. They are eliminated but not created. The state already has about 170 districts.
You'd have to draw district lines, plus Floyd County isn't going to give away all that property to an independent district.

If you combined both Laurel County schools back together and made a London Independent then it could be 1A and 6A.
However, if the City school wad 1A and it had ALL of the athletes than it would be a threat in football. It definitely would have been back in 03 and 04. However, i still dont think they could compete on a consistent basis, maybe one year out of every 4 or 5.
Now basketball is a different story.
They would of had some dominating teams over the past 20 years.

Laurel County has always had great basketball and been well respected. I totally agree about basketball. Fun teams to watch.

I am going to get blasted for this again, but I don't care: The problem is community involvement and coaching. I think it is getting better but when both have been that bad for years, it takes a long time to change.
RIUTG got it. I was saying if ALL the athletes were at the 1A school they could COMPETE. Competitive does not mean they win the title. Nobody expects Lex Cath, Boyle, or Cov Cath to win the 4A title, but they can compete for it.
I guarantee if every male in the Laurel County school system stood side by side and we looked through each one of them, we could find the athletes to field a good football team. However, they are not playing and they do not really know how. Coach Welch and coach Larkey need time, I do not care if it is them or Frank and Dean coaching, whoever is there needs time to create a good feeder system, get kids to come out, etc...
I agree that right now, they could not compete but if we went on just athletes, they have them.

If memory serves me correct, the last time North Laurel played Knox Central, NL won and it was like 2 years ago.
Name me a few schools that do beat those teams on a regular basis anyway.

Have you ever been to NL or SL and seen a game they have played?
Have you ever been in either school?
the biggest problem i have is posters commenting on what every team should have when they dont know what every team has or what kind of kids are in the school systems or talent the kids have.
Rockcastle has plenty of big kids walking around, but dont want to play either because mommy wont let them, didnt let them, or too lazy to play. i am sure it is the same at other schools. i am sure every coach wants the best athletes in teh school to play adn tries to get them, but if they dont want to play, what are you going to do, put a gun to their head and force them.

Do we not give Larry and Chris time?
Do the kids not need to come out?
Has the coaching not been bad over the years?
Have the athletes not came out to play?
It seems like you troll my posts, I can never say anything right to you. I don't let it bother me, but it gets old. RIUTG agrees with me, and you aren't commenting on his post. Interesting........
Just answer me as to what I said incorrectly.
Oh and to what you asked:
I have attended a South Laurel game, been inside both schools, have a good friend that played for 4 years at North Laurel in the early 90's. I also have a friend that teaches at South Laurel, etc........
