FOOTBALL FRIDAY UPDATE: Louisville Central 35, LaRue County 14 (10/22)
-AA+A

Mr. Football candidate Anthony Wales ran for three touchdowns and caught another to lead the top-ranked Louisville Central Yellowjackets to a 35-14 win against the host LaRue County Hawks on Friday night in the Class 3-A, District 3 regular-season title game.

Wales carried the ball 20 times for 278 yards – giving him exactly 2,000 rushing yards for the season. He scored on a 10-yard run less than 2 minutes into the game and added touchdown runs of 68 and 60 yards in the third quarter on his first two carries of the second half. He also caught three passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore fullback Tyree Huguley ran for a 1-yard touchdown late in the first half for the Yellowjackets’ other score. The plunge came four plays after LaRue County botched a punt after limiting Central’s preceding five-play drive to 21 yards and a 12-yard holding penalty.

After his team had fallen behind 28-0, senior Cody Thompson got the Hawks on the scoreboard with a 23-yard pass from senior quarterback Slade Owens with 3:18 left in the third quarter as the teams combined for three touchdowns in a four-play span. Wales’ 60-yard touchdown run came 18 seconds later, while Thompson scored on an 80-yard run after a 3-yard carry by senior fullback Drew Newberry.

Thompson, who entered Friday as the area’s leading rusher, finished with 167 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Newberry added 60 yards on 17 carries.

Both teams ran 48 plays each, but the Yellowjackets (7-2 overall, 3-0 district) more than doubled the Hawks (5-4, 2-1) in yards, 509-253. LaRue County didn’t break the 100-yard mark until a 7-yard run by Newberry with 8:14 left in the third quarter.

Although Central has been playing football since 1925, it was the first meeting between the teams.

UP NEXT: LaRue County plays at Washington County (5-4) at 7:30 p.m. Frida

Thanks for the info L-ville.

This was actually a very good game. It was 13-0 central with 30 ticks left in the first half. LaRue forced a central punt, only to fumble it deep inside their own territory. Central scored to follow.
