Hillbilly Drag Races
#1
I wonder if Paintsville will miss the thousands of dollars they missed by not participating in the event. The Combs airport is a joint ownership between Paintsville and Prestonsburg, yet Paintsville refused to participate in this event. It is estimated that 15,000 people showed up for the event through the day. At 5 bucks a head, Paintsville missed a lot of money.

$5.00x15,000=$75,000

$75,000/2= $37,500

Could have helped with the city layoffs.

Is it going to become a yearly event?
#4
Please elaborate lol
What is a "hillbilly" drag race?
Is it any different from a normal drag race?
#5
Hand dropped 1/8th mile races at The Combs airport.

Rumor is the airport is going to be turned into a dragstrip.

It was great. There was some mean Cars there.

I heard they just sold over 5k tickets for the event and had over 120+ cars.

I went and it was an awesome event for everyone involved. No complaints from anyone that I know of, other than it being 100 degrees out.

Since the event was so popular I believe they're going to wait until next spring to host another race and repave the strip and add more bleachers and probably fix the parking problem that the everyone had.

I'd like to thank the city of Prestonsburg for putting on such a great event!

The guy giving out the armbands said they had 15,000 of them, and ran out. They need to block off the roadside to keep all the freeloaders from getting a birdseye view for free.

You may be right, but all that matters is that it was a very successful event and I'm glad there is some racing back in the Big Sandy area.

I talked to Stanley Haddix lastnight, who lives at the airport and has the racing parts store located on the property, AND is on the Airport Board. He said there was over 5,000 fans paid to get in, and around 300 racers. Two concession trailers that were backed up all night long.

The board has already got calls about having another event. As for the surface, the airport runway was just redone last year. For those of you who have high hopes of the Combs airport becoming a permanent drag racing facility, I wouldn't bet on it. Everyone on the airport board has as a plane or planes, and they are in the hangers located at Combs. This event took alot of time getting the board to approve. On a side note. I think they should have a race during the Apple Festival at the end of this month, first of October. That would bring in even more fans.

Back in my day, we had drag racing at this exact same location.
