The Boone County football team is 3-0 for the first time this century after defeating Cooper 35-14 Friday at home behind a suddenly explosive passing attack.

Senior quarterback Kameron Schwartz accounted for most of the Rebels' 381 yards total offense by passing for 280 and three long touchdowns.

Schwartz hit wide receiver Austin Howell with a 65-yard bomb to help put the Rebels ahead 14-0 in the second quarter. He found Howell again with a 58-yard touchdown pass in the third to make it 21-7.

Bryson Thompson hauled in Schwartz's third scoring pass in the fourth quarter on a 30-yard reception down the middle of the field. Howell led all receivers with four catches for 132 yards.

"We have definitely opened it up this year," Schwartz said.

Boone, ranked sixth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, has not lost to Cooper (0-3) in four meetings.

Last year, the Rebels completed two passes against the Jaguars while winning 34-20. They beat the Jaguars 26-3 in 2009 while completing five passes for 53 yards. Boone won the first meeting in 2008 with no passing yards.

"For us, it's always been about taking the players we have and finding the best way to win," Rebels coach Rick Thompson said. "In the past, we've had the right players to run the football and we couldn't get the passing game going. This year, we can throw it."

Howell said the Rebels can still run the football, but with a twist.

"We don't have that one big back like we've had in the past, but we have three guys who can run it and we have three guys who can catch it," Howell said. "It just gives defenses something to think about."

The Rebels were not devoid of key running plays. Tailback Cody Rodriguez had rushing scores of nine yards in the second quarter and 12 yards in the third. Mikel Reynolds led the Rebels with 30 yards on the ground.

Defensive end Sam Steele led the Rebels' defense with an interception and a sack. "He was everywhere," Thompson said.

Tyler Morris threw a pair of touchdown passes for Cooper, one for 30 yards to Tanner Kissel in the second quarter and one for 40 yards to Nathan Love in the fourth.

The Rebels are on a three-game winning streak for the first time since winning seven in a row in 2007. They are unbeaten three weeks into the season for the first time since 2000, when they went 2-0 following a season-opening bye.

Boone started 2-0 last year, but lost seven of its final eight games while finishing 3-7. Coach Thompson said it's nice to have already equaled last year's win total.

"Covington Catholic will give us an idea where we're at," Thompson said of Friday's showdown with the unbeaten Colonels, who play LaSalle today at home. "They're a good team and we're going to have to play well to win."
