A look at Beechwood's schedule reveals not a single Class A opponent outside of the Tigers' district foes.

That big school competition is intended to test the Tigers' mettle. And they had every bit of that mettle tested by Holmes on Friday.

The Bulldogs (1-1) forced six turnovers and pushed Beechwood (2-0) to the brink before the Tigers escaped with a 21-13 victory over their Class 4A opponent.

"Obviously (games like this) are going to make us better," Beechwood coach Noel Rash said.

"I mean, lord have mercy, they put 11 (defensive players) in the box and came after us. Holmes played their butts off and we got lucky and got out of here with a (win)."

Outside of the occasional long run by Beechwood senior Cameron Vocke - who finished with 94 yards on 11 carries - Holmes' physical defense stifled the Tigers.

However, field position left the Bulldogs at a disadvantage. In the first half, Beechwood's average drive started on Holmes' 42 yard line - 33 yards better than the average starting spot for the Bulldogs.

Beechwood's defense was equally impressive, holding Holmes under 100 yards of offense and keeping the Bulldogs out of the end zone.

But Beechwood's offense spoiled the shutout by allowing two of their five fumbles to be returned for touchdowns.

The first - an 82-yard return by Jamel Cutright - gave Holmes a 7-0 lead early in the opening quarter.

Beechwood wasted no time responding. Vocke returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards and punched the next play into the end zone with a 2-yard touchdown run to tie the game.

Vocke added a 25-yard score to give Beechwood a 14-7 lead at the break despite four first-half turnovers.

"(Holmes) came out and punched us in the mouth and we weren't ready for it," Rash said.

"We were not ready to play football."

The game time was pushed back an hour due to the heat and the muggy temperatures made for a slippery pigskin.

Slippery enough that in the first quarter a Beechwood receiver coughed up a would-be 54-yard touchdown inches from the goal line without being touched by a defender.

"(To win a game with so many turnovers) speaks to the talent that we've got. It also speaks to a lack of mental toughness that we have right now," Rash said.

"Our guys are on cruise control a little bit and hopefully (this game) will wake them up."

A 67-yard fumble return by senior Greg Clemons left Holmes trailing 21-13 midway through the third quarter, but the Bulldogs never again got closer to the end zone than Beechwood's 37-yard line.

"We were so happy that (our kids) kept fighting back," said first-year Holmes coach Terry Liggin.

"They did what we coach them to do - they continued to play for four quarters and they continued to get after (Beechwood). We've got a long way to go, but we're getting there."
