Mayfield vs Paducah Tilghman
#1
By Lanny Lancaster

The annual battle between the Blue Tornado of Paducah Tilghman and the Cardinals of Mayfield is considered the outstanding game in Western Kentucky and one of the longest and best rivalries in the state. There is and always will be a keen, sometimes bitter, rivalry between the towns of Mayfield and Paducah when it comes to their football.

The Mayfield-Paducah series began in 1911, with the first game being a 0-0 tie. In 1921 the game became a Thanksgiving affair, and “Turkey Day” became the most important day of the year for the two schools. The game remained on “Turkey Day” until 1959 when the Kentucky State High School Playoffs began. The game is not played in the middle of the schools’ season but the intensity of the competition has not changed. To many, on both sides, this is still THE game of the year, and the rest of the schedule is secondary in importance.

From the Mayfield–Tilghman series:

*Tilghman records show the 1911 game a 0-0 TIE, Mayfield’s records show a 22-0 Mayfield victory.

*Tilghman records show the 1912 game a 26-0 Tornado victory. Mayfield records show a 22-0 Cardinal victory.

*In 1925 one player accounted for all five points in Mayfield’s 3-2 win. Weldon “Nappy” Yates booted a field goal and took a saftey to preserve Mayfield’s win.

*Mayfield won by the most lopsided margin 85-6 in 1919. There was no game in 1920 because Paducah “suggested the teams not play since there could be no doubt as to the result”.

*Tilghman’s longest winning streak is 6, Mayfield’s is 6.

Some of the following information is from Lanny Lancaster and the more recent stuff is from the Kentucky Athletic Association’s website

The Series is now 41 wins for the Cards to 47 wins of PT with 10 ties between the two. This will most likly be the best game of the night while it will be played at PT. There will be lots of speed on the field as two of the most prolific speedy teams in the state take the field fri night. Who will come out on top?? Will it be a track meet or will both teams be forced to go to the air bc of their stand out defences....?

PT by 6.
#3
PT by 2 scores. Coming off a loss against perenial power Reitz in a game that shoulda coulda ifa been......PT will iron out there deficianies in execution and with the added feul to the fire of being Mayfield week,,,Randy should have the boys firing on all cylinders. I think the inexperienced O for Mayfield will not be able to put up more than 14 and PT will look to Harmon early and often...

humm well not saying greenwood is a great team but they are 6a and were nearly twice the size (avg 260lbs) of our kids avg(205lbs)and jonathan jackson still put down record numbers on the ground. Not to mention last weeks game 59 pts... they proved they can score. Pt might win but i believe it will be cause Mayfield just can't stop them but believe me, Mayfield has way to many wepons to not score, but then again i can kinda see a low scoring game bc of the def's both teams poseses. i kinda think this one may be a higher score humm....... lets say....

PT 27 May 34 down to the wire

If the PT that played Lone Oak shows up - they may win.
If the PT team that played Reitz shows up - they may lose.
#10
Mayfield wins
#11
A better effort than we had Greenwood will be required or PT will win. PT is the favorite but it is a rival game so anyone any year can win
#12
Mayfield takes this one.
