Hall of Fame? Close? Or NO WAY!
#1
Stardust got an idea to do something like this in the pro wrestling forum, so I thought it would be good in the baseball forum.

We can throw out some names of former players, and we we classify them like this:
-Hall of Famer: This means without a shadow of a doubt they SHOULD be a Hall-of-Famer. (We are not including any legal, steroidal, political, etc... in this.)
-Close: Close means that they had very impressive numbers, a great career but they are not completely Hall-Of-Famers. A lot of players with hot starts that were derailed by injuries, or maybe just players with consistent but never great careers.
-NO WAY!- This can be the steroidal players if you want them to be. Also, this category can be for current Hall-of-Famers that just make you wonder how they got there.

Barry Larkin. I don't have any stats off the top of my head and I am too tired to look them up. IMO he is HOF.

Is the lack of gold gloves the sticking point with you? That is what turns me off to him. If he had 3 or more, I would probably put him in. His batting average is too low to put him in on his bat alone.

Got a separate thread on Albert Pujols and Griffey Jr. Both are Hall-of-Famers in my book.

Fred McGriff, very close but probably not to me. His numbers remind me a lot of Sammy and McGuire. Lot of HR and RBI, below-average average and defense.

Manny, without a doubt. 2nd ballot to give him the punishment for steroids (whatever it is the writers do) but he is a sure-fire hall of famer.

Mike Piazza, eventually voted in.

Derek Jeter, without a doubt.

Ichiro, not sure yet. Probably yes.

I am gonna get killed for this but:

Barry Larkin, close.
#24
The steroids thing is what gets me killed in just about every argument on this site. However, from the names mentioned above:
Barry Larkin- HOF (if Sandberg, Pee Wee Reese, Roberto Alomar and Mazeroski is in, then so should Larkin, because his numbers arent that much different than Alomar and Sandbergs, and are much better than Reese and Mazeroski)..
Bagwell should be in.
A-Fraud will get in, although I despise him.
Mike Piazza will get in, based on his hitting alone, but the guy couldnt throw out my 300+ lb fatass stealing second.
Derek Jeter is a lock.
Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine will all be in (any pitcher with good success during the steroid era will get in).
What about Pedro Martinez? IMO, he's in. 219 wins, a 69% win percentage, 2.93 ERA..yeah, he's in.
Curt Schilling will get in.
Ken Griffey Jr. is a lock.
Albert Pujols is a first ballot HOFer
Chipper Jones will get in.
Ichiro Suzuki will get in.
Manny will get in also.
To me, there are a few guys that get overlooked but should get more consideration.
Sosa and McGwire wont get in but should. Yeah they took steroids but baseball turned a blind eye when these two guys single-handedly rescued its popularity after the '94 strike. So based on saving baseball alone, I think they should get in.
Then there are guys like Larry Walker and my alltime favorite forgotten snub, Albert Belle. Albert Belle was an asshole, no doubt. But lets look at his numbers, shall we?
Played 12 seasons.
381 HRs
1239 RBIs
.295 BA
.370 OBP
389 Doubles
Finished top 10 MVP five times, 1 MVP award.
6 time all star
Never missed many games (8 seasons of missing fewer than 10 games, missed 19 games once)..and over a 162 game average, his stats looked like this.
.295 BA 40 HR 130 RBI .370 OBP .564 SLG%.
For years, Ive said that Albert Belle should be a Hall of Famer, but he has receieved 7.7 and 3.5% consideration.
Then you'll have guys like Paul Konerko, who has great numbers, but will be close.
Jim Thome should be a lock as well..
