#1
IIF YOU COULD PICK ONE COACH TO TURN YOUR FOOTBALL PROGRAM AROUND, WHO WOULD IT BE?
FIRST OF ALL I WOULDNT WANT A COACH FROM LOUISVILE, WHY?
THAT'S LIKE THAT NBA COACH WHO COACHED JORDAN AND THE BULLSTHEN GOT TO COACH SHAQ AND THE LAKERS.(YOU GET MY POINT)
THE COACHES FROM TRINITY OR ST.X GOT TO CHOOSE FROM ROUND 2500 KIDS.I WOULDNT CHOOSE THE GUY FROM DANVILLE( WONT SAY NO NAMES) HE DOES A GREAT JOB,BUT HE ALWAYS A WEALTH OF TALENT TO CHOOSE FROM(ALWAYS 1 OR 2 D-1 RUNNING BACKS) WHAT COULD THESE GUYS HAVE DONE AT A ##### #### OR ANOTHER SMALL 1 A MOUNTAIN SCHOOL.(NO NAMES LOL).ID NARROW MY LIST TO 3 COACHES TO TURN MY PROGRAM AROUND AND I WOULDNT HAVE TO GO TO LOUISVILLE TO GET THEM.
1-DUDLEY HILTON, 2-JIM MATNEY 3-PAUL RAINS
RAINS HAS WORKED MIRACLES FOR LITTLE OLE LEX.CHRISTIAN. BEAT BEECHWOOD LAST SEASON.BUILT A SOLD PROGRAM AT MONTGOMERY CO.(WHO 2 YEARS IN A ROW WERE ONE GAME FROM PLAYIN FOR THE 3A CHAMPIONSHIP). MATNEY, ALWAYS TOUGH AT SHELDON CLARK(ASK TIM COUCH,SC BEAT LESLIE CO. THAT YEAR.) LOOK WHAT HE DID THIS YEAR, HE KNOWS HOW TO WIN. THAT LEAVES MY FINAL PICK AND THE WINNER!
DUDLEY HILTON WOULD BE MY PICK! THE GUY WHO WENT TO BOURBON AND KNOCKED OFF ALL THE JUGGERNAUTS( LEX.CATH,BOYLE)IN THE PLAYOFFS WHO BEAT HIM BY 50 IN THE REG.SEASON. DUDLEY WON BOURBON CO. A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE FIRST AND LAST TIME . HE ALSO WON IT AT BELLCO. IN 3 A. THE BELL CO. (LOG MOUNTAIN) TRADITION HE HAS ESTABLISHED.BELL CO. IS ALWAYS A CONTENDER! IF I HAD MY PICK, IT'S DUDLEY HILTON TO TURN MY PROGRAM AROUND. HE'S A CLASS ACT AND A WINNER!:argue:

Hillard Howard-He was a master motivator and he could make you believe you could tackle a tank. You also knew you better do your job or youd wind up in the weight with him with a pair of boxing gloves on and believe me that was never good. The guy just had this no fear attitude that rubbed off on everyone that played for him. He was a master at the mental chess match that is football.

Nice post see you put some thought in to it.....

IMO, this is a no-brainer......it would have to be my favorite coach EVER, Phillip Haywood
#8
Robbie Harris would be a good Coach for a good football team
#9
Wasn't Robbie a Navy Seal?

I would go with Haywood because he is a proven winner year in and year out.

Quit using caps, please.......Capitalize when needed, but using caps on everything makes your post extremely hard to read.

Vince--

Do a little more research--Dudley Hilton walked into a great situaton at Bourbon County. Things were set up for him to succeed there. Even the people involved in the situation will tell you that. For that reason alone--he wouldn't be my first choice.

And keep in mind--the only person on your list who actually has "started up" or "rebuilt" a program is Rains. And--I am not sure that he would be the right man for the job either. He also walked into a good situation as well. I think that you will truly find out how good of a coach he is this year.

Matney--I agree with.

1). Haywood has been great for the Pirates! 2). Howard will prove he is a man for the job also. 3). I do think that Hilton is a great coach and could win at most schools with time and a good staff. I would love to start with any of the three.
#13
i would have to say jim matney what can i say look what he has done at central and look what he did with sheldon clark he just takes teams and converts them into winners what can u say
#14

Agreed about Dudley, one of my buddies from College played for BC when they won it, and they said they knew that class was going to be the best they ever had.

I agree with that.

Phillip Haywood or Hillard Howard b/c these coaches has been there alot and the love winning and they will do anything to come away with a win.
#21
ill take one Phillip Haywood over 10 Hillard Howards. Phillip Haywood can make the most out of less talent more than any coach i know of. Hillard can win with superior talent, but who couldnt win with that. Anybody with any football knowledge in the 80s could have won a state championship at Pikeville. They were not much less than a small college team playing in class A. And people can see now, that when your competition is stronger, you'll get beat more, just like Hillard is taking a pounding at LCC. And its going to get worse for him next year. Pikeville ran their record up in the 80s due to a VERY weak district, and then the small college team did win the class A championship 3 times yes, but, Phillip Haywood is a much better coach IMO.

I would say Haywood....I think Matney would be my #2.

Hillbilly, you my friend need to do your research.Dudley walked into a situation of being in the hardest, toughest, most talented 2a dist. in the state. Great situation there Hillbilly , I mean great. Being in a dist. with Lex catholic, Danville, and ( oh yes) LITTLE OLE BOYLE COUNTY. Man, you dont even know what your talking about on this one.
Toughest 2a dist. in the state, losing program, Dudley was handed a good situation.
WTF are you talking about? Do you even know? Proably one of the greatest cinderella
stories in Kentucky football, Bourbon co. winning the 2a state championship and overcoming the odds to beat Lex. cath and Boyle co.( 2 teams that beat them by an avg. of 47 points in the reg. season) and to also beat a very good Lawrence co. team that just broke Breathitt co.'s 43 game win streak( and lawrence co. had the alltime leading reception leader in the state).Hillbilly , you wont find 1 other person on here that will tell you Dudley walked into a good situation when he got in a dist. with Danville,Lex.cath,Boyle co. and Garrad co( who had one of the highest winning %s in the 90's as well).Your way off Hillbilly and by the way Dudley didn't even know he was going to get the Persian kid( Bourbon's leading rusher) He moved in 2 weeks before the season started. So BUWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA TO THIS LOAD OF CRAP!
#25
Ok hillbilly, your way off on this one buddy!
How did Dudley step into a good situation?
In a dist. with such week teams like Danville, Lex.cath., and little ole Boyle county.
What a great situation it is to be in the toughest 2a dist. in the entire state and not to mention your Bourbon county. Hummmmmmm, What a cake walk! It seems to me your the one who needs to do alittle more research Hillbilly( a whole lot more to tell the truth). It's a real good situation Hillbilly to have to face 2 teams in the playoffs who beat you by an avg. of 47 points each in the reg. season.( lex.cath and Boyle co.)
Then having to beat a very good Lawrence co. team who just beat the best 2a team in the state breaking Breathitt co.'s 43 game win streak. Bourbon co. the only #4 seed to win a state championship in the toughest 2a dist. in the state, but Dudley just knew and Bourbon co. knew that they'd win it all along. That's pretty much what you said Hillbilly.Dudley took an avg. team and won a state championship playing in the toughest 2a dist. in the state. But it rained, but it was muddy, it all fell in Dudley's favor.( besides the fact and simply excuses by people who are excusemakers).
So mabey you need to get started on your research Hillbilly. Start by looking up Bourbon co.( don't go to good situations in your websters), then proceed to look up Danville, lex. catholic, and Boyle co.( see the ky. state champions section).
After that look up the word miracle( something you believe in but cannot see) and then tell me what you call what Dudley did at Bourbon co being a #4 seed , losing 3 games in the reg. season by an avg. of 40 points or more, then winning the 2a title in 97. Hillbilly, no way! ok now you tell me who your first choice would be??

What? Hillard made those teams what they were not the other way around. And you wanna talk about weakness Belfry didnt win anything till they went to 2a-the weakest class in the state. Ive got nothing but respect for Haywood dont get me wrong, but I palyed for Hillard and I played against Haywood and Ill take Hillard.
#28
Oh i have nothing but respect for Hillard too, but Im just telling it like it is, if Phillip Haywood was coaching those Pikeville teams in the 80s, you all would have had more than 3. Myself and two other brothers played against Pikeville, in the 80s and 90s and you all can say what you want, but you cant coach size, and you cant coach speed not including those transfers from hell you all inherited. Hillard was the luckiest coach in the state. Pikeville's athletes in the 80s were superior than every other team in that class, and he should have had at LEAST 2, maybe 3 more. Haywood gets more from his team than Hillard ever did.

Vince--I don't know what kind of drugs you are on--but by all means, PLEASE SHARE.

It WASN'T and average team that Hilton had. They were talented and had been coached well prior to him coming (which is 1 out of 2 reasons why he came to begin with). EVERYONE associated with the Bourbon County program at that time knew that they had a special group. IF you don't believe me--why don't you ask someone from Bourbon.

When you start to talk about the weather--that even proves my point even more. Hilton HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE WEATHER (unless he called in a few favors with God--which I seriously doubt due to some of his other classless maneuvers over the years).

He got lucky. Everything fell into his favor.

That doesn't make a coach great at turning around programs (which is the THREAD TOPIC). If this was about great coaches--I would agree. But it isn't. Pay attention--Dudley KNEW WHAT HE HAD. He knew if was a great situation.

All of these powerhouse teams that you listed were not in their "glory" days yet. No championships for Boyle at that time, LexCath couldn't hardly win a 2nd round playoff game.

YOU are the one who needs to learn the facts.

And to conclude--my pick--would be one of the best coaches in the HISTORY of Kentucky high school football:

MIKE YEAGLE . . . . . (and that should be all I have to say)--but I will give you a little more.

Took a perennial winning program that COULD NOT get over the hump against teams like Pikeville and Cumberland--and REWROTE THE 1A RECORD BOOK. Beechwood wasn't anywhere near as good as they were once he took over.

Years: 15
Career record: 181-27
State Championship Appearances: 11
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS: 8

Chew on that one for a while Vince . . . .

For me it would be a toss up between Haywood and Matney. They both have the knowledge of the game one needs to win and most importantly they know how to surround themselves with great assistants.
