Mountain Top 5 Passing Teams For 2011
#1
What's your top 5 passing teams in the mountains for the 2011 season? Here's mine.

1. Prestonsburg
2. Pike County Central
3. Perry County Central
4. Harlan
5. Middlesboro

There could be others that will make this list after the season starts. These are all schools who did not lose thier QB's to graduation, have most if not all of thier recievers back and most if not all of thier off.line back . Hazard is one team that comes to mind that could make this list if they can fill the void that John Combs left.
#2
Where is Combs going to play college ball at?
#3
I've not heard. I would like to know myself. I saw where you had posted that question on another thread and was watching to see if anyone would give you an answer. Surely someone on the Hazard thread knows.
#4
No way that Harlan's QB puts up better numbers than Chase Roark at M'boro. No way.
#5
I wouldn't be surprised to see Harlan (Saragas) have as many passing yards as Middlesboro. Harlan threw it a lot last year and will probably throw it more this season with three linemen graduating. Bianchi is a very good receiver, and they have several backs (Morris, Williams, Jones, Logan) who can catch the ball and pick up yards after the catch.
#6
The reason I put Saragas and Harlan over Roark and Middlesboro is because of the comparison of thier sophomore seasons and the fact that Middlesboro has to reload thier off.line. Chase Roark had good numbers last season. Ty Saragas had better sophomore numbers. Not by far. Only in td completions and int's. Heres thier sophomore stats.

Rec Pass Att Pass Comp Ints Pass yds Pass yds pg tds

Roark 4-7 249 116 12 1752 159 15

Saragas 5-7 238 145 7 1877 156 25

Thier sophomore seasons were definately comparable. Saragas has all his recievers coming back and Harlan's off.line is better this year. Saragas should put up some major numbers this season. I'm sure Roark will be good to but he may not have the protection that he had last season.

Don't forget David Allen at WR, HDE. He had as many TD catches as Bianchi and roughly half the receptions. May just have the best hands on the team. Harlan lost three linemen, two that were really solid starters and one who shared center duties with an underclassman. The center position is filled by junior Stephen Jones at 5'10'' 240 and the two tackle positions are filled by Kenny witt and a kid they call oskie. Both kids are good athletes with some size, about 6'0'' 220. The guards are Okie Boggs and Christian Turbyfill. Both good strong kids with lots of ability.

Mayfield - I asked everyone I could find at the gym this evening after reading your post, and I could not get an answer or even potential choices for Combs. I'll keep trying. The information and optimism I did get makes me think that Hazard should be in this top 5 list somewhere.
#9
Dungy, Hazards chances of making that list this season are pretty darn good. I was only thinking that Combs was a very good QB and whoever takes that spot will have some big shoes to fill, not that Hazard doesn't have plenty of athletes that can fill'em. Zack Blanton would be the one I would think that is gonna get that chance. I just wonder if he'll be able to form the kind of bond with his recievers that Jon Combs had. Also, I noticed that in the last 2 seasons that he has been the backup QB, He has not thrown the ball much at all. I think he has thrown 6 passes, 6 completed for 102 yds and no TDs in 2 seasons. Combs had a years experience going into his senior year and also a good amount of time at QB his sophomore season. But, like i said, they'll probably be one of the better passing teams in the mountains anyway. Who knows maybe better than last season.

i also expect to see Roark at Middlesboro put up nice numbers this season.. id put Middlesboro more toward the top of that list, but Prestonsburg #1 passing IMO
#12
Roark will be in Gerogia next weekend ....ESPN RISE invite for top Jr, Qb's. Chappell does an outstanding job with that offense. Recievers coming back Riddle 6'4 ( numbers out the roof last year)...Epperson 6'1 (if he doesn't concentrate on Baseball...Can be one of the best in FB) Poindexter 6'4....will be one of the best (could be div. 1) Mike 5'11 great hands and moves well with ball, different player than last year.....Harris 6'0 getting much stronger. Foister 5'10 with great speed and hands. With a loaded fresh. class. Look for BIG numbers from Roark. They have a strength, it is their passing game.

How do you think the Yellowjackets off. line will do with the one senior and the rest sophomores? I know that Middlesboro has the QB and recievers but do you think that Roark will have the time he needs to throw the ball? I have heard through other posters that he stays in the pocket and thats good. How well does he scramble out of the pocket? That could be the key to thier season this year.
#14
I don't think anyone in the mountains has the athletes and QB play like Perry Central!!!
#15
Breathitt Also has Fletcher and Wes Noble coming back and Richard Trent coming back.
#16
Coach Haddix will have his first full year under his belt at Perry Central and although Perry Central's passing game was very good last year it will be much improved this year. Perry Central has the athletes, quarterback, and Coach to have a very successful year. Perry Central vs Prestonsburg should be a shoot out this year with two of the better passing teams in the mountains. Good Luck Commodores and Coach Haddix.
#17
Knox Central has one of the top rated receivers in his class in the nation. Search Jeffery Canady and see his interview on NUC. KC will have a senior QB who has been underused as a passer for the last 2 years. Our new coach will take steps to ensure this pair gets to connect more often.

I don't know how our stats compare to others and have no idea how that will turn out this year either. But I know with Canady and Barger on offense we should have one of the best passing attacks around.
#18
PCC tops my list with Huff at QB and his stable of recievers. Its hard to beat their speed and athleticism. This team with a lil luck, heart and motivation could make lots of noise in November 2011. Haddix has gotta do something on D though.
#19
Williamsburg has been 1 of the top passing teams in the state the last 8-9 years. I don't see that changing much.
#20
Wiliamsburg has had alot of success passing the ball in years passed. They will have to replace Payne, who I think was one of the best recievers out there, and two of thier remaining top recievers. Filling Payne's shoes is the key for Williamsburg. Could be tough to do. If they can they will certainly continue to have a good passing game. Good luck to the Yellowjackets.
#21
Last year K.C. had a very balanced attack. Thier rushing game seemed to be more of thier bread and butter. But you sure are right about the Canady kid he's tough. K.C. has always had a Canady or two and they have all been tough. Good luck to the Panthers.
#22
breathitt bobcats has alot coming back running back an all wr . the trent kid will have a big year in the air
#23
In no order and IMO

Breathitt
Perry Cent
M-Boro
Hazard
W-Burg
Somerset
Pulaski
#24
Pike Central had the #1 passing team last year in the state and only had 9 games. Dont see any change. Only better.

The Canady gene definitely has laces on it. This should be a fun year for KC offensively. Barger is a very underrated QB. He led our basketball team this year with an amazing combination of athleticism and attitude. His accomplishments on the football field fuel that confidence.

And with a speedy set of back for defenses to have to keep linebackers watching - his passing may be difference for us this year.

Good luck to the dragons as well.

Derek Forrest Just tweeted that Combs signed with Union today.
#27
Good luck and congrats to former Hazard Bulldogs QB, Jon Combs, for signing with the Uion College Bulldogs. He must have bulldog in his blood.
#28
I don't know much about what Bell has in terms of receivers, but the Ossolonian kid is a true athlete. He has a cannon for an arm and is just as talented with the run. He will be exciting to watch.

How can this discussion happen without mentioning Rowan Co. and Adam Wing?

Rowan County isn't really considered a MTN school.
