2010 Newport team better than Dixie this Year
#1
Was the 2010 9th region champs the Newport Wildcats better than this years 9th region champs Dixie heights?
#2
No question. Not to take anything away from Dixie's championship, but the 9th region was down A LOT. Neither this years Dixie or NCC would have advanced past the first round in last years 9th region tourney. Newport was much more athletic and a better shooting team than this years Dixie. Hatton is a very good player, but the overall teams are down this year IMO.

I agree the ninth was way down this year but, Newport did not get past the first round last year either, I believe they got beat by around 20 by Christian County.

However, last year's Christian County team was probably better than this years Lexington Catholic team.

It's really hard to say which team is better. I actually think that this year's Dixie team had more talent across the board than last years Newport team.

IMO, Newport had better athletes than Dixie, but Dixie is the better team. Their ability to play defense and set-up a 1/2 court game is better than what I saw from the Wildcats last season.

Dixie is a nice team. As evidenced by their philosphy last night, they only want to play man to man. Last years Newport would destroy Dixie's man to man. As someone who played and coached basketball it's all about matchups. Last years Newport is a bad matchup for what this year's Dixie likes to do.

To answer the question, no, i think this year's Dixie team was better than Newport's team last year. Newport had the athletes, but that team is irrelevant without Demarko Foster. Dixie isn't as good without Brandon Hatton, but they're still a good team.

Dixie sounded a litte rattled at the start of the game (on the radio). I think that they got down by around 10 before really starting to break out and the game stayed at 7-12 for Lex Cath. In comparison to last years Newport Christian Co loss, this was not as bad but I think Christian Co last year was a little better than Lex Cath this year. So I would have to say that Newport is the better team between the two. How "down" was this region this year?

9th region had 5 teams capable of winning the region this year, but talent-wise, compared to the rest of the state, the 9th region was well behind.

That statement makes no sense. Fact is Newport had Foster. They were clearly better. Anyone who knows any basketball at all will tell you this.

yes newport had foster and including foster, i still think this dixie team was better. Newport had a great run in the regional tournament and beat a Holmes team that everyone was certain would make the sweet 16, but both 10-11 dixie and 09-10 newport played similar schedules and got similar results. So how was Newport "clearly" better?

Depends on when the two teams would play this mythical match-up. If during the regular season, I'd give the edge to '11 Dixie. If in the 9th Region playoffs, I'd give the edge to '10 Newport. Newport came out of nowhere to win the 9th Region in '10. Heck, they didn't even win their district. Dixie was consistent all year, but struggled some in the playoffs, almost blowing a 17-point lead to Highlands in a first-round game.

Holmes in '07-'09 was an aberration. One generally doesn't see that level of talent among 9th District teams. How the Bulldogs destroyed LexCath in the first half of their '09 quarterfinal game is still the best half of basketball I've ever seen played by a Northern Kentucky team. The past two 9th Region winners are more typical of what usually comes out of Northern Kentucky -- nice teams but no real threat to win the Sweet 16.

How soon everyone forgets those Cov Cath teams that went down to rupp and were always one of the top 3 or 4 teams down there.

well were just comparing this year's Dixie team with last year's Newport team. I don't think either team would've hung with the 03-04 Covcath team with Votel, Nestheide, and Kennedy

Newport won a region by beating the defending state champ who returned most of the key players. Dixie beat a bad Newcath team with 1 good player, that should have been eliminated in the districts if the draw had turned out accordingly.

I know Newport beat a very good Holmes teams in 1 game. But 1 game isn't enough for a team to be "clearly" better than a team that also won region. That's kind of like saying Morehead St. is better than Kentucky because MSU beat Louisville and UK only beat Princeton. I picked Dixie because they had alittle more depth than Newport and i think played better team ball.
