Mountain teams don't leave the mountains
#1
I realize the road trips may be further to away games, but something I have always wondered is why mountain teams generally never leave the mountain area for pre-district games around other parts of the state? I personally believe it would be very beneficial to mountain teams to play outside the mountains, and improve post-season preparation by seeing other teams from across the state (lexington, louisville, nky,..etc). Seems as though mountain teams have excellent support and very loyal faithful fans with the top notch facilities and crowd support following, that some top-tier programs across the bluegrass would love to welcome in a pre-district game. Generally speaking, is there a specific reason why they usually never leave the mountains to see/play against different talent/style of play from across the state?

One big reason is money. We don't have near the money most of the city schools and others have in the program. Our community sponsors are not near what a Lex. or Louisville may be. On the competion side. Bell plays the state champion each year. The comp. is just fine and don't have to travel. Looking at this years schedule we go to Lex. twice. Travel and school time is a concern.

Travel and time are tough on teams leaving or coming into the Mountains.

I remember when my girlfriend (wife now by gf then) lived in Hazard, just from London, it took at least 1 hour and 20 minutes, if you went speed limit, and it is only 60 miles. It takes less time from Mt. Vernon to Lexington up I-75.

I could imagine that travel is much harder and slower the further into the mountains that you get. Places that are not on the parkway are probably considerably harder.

good points, I can completely understand how money, travel and time could be an issue, I just think it would be interesting to see how the Mountain teams matched up against others outside the mountains on a more regular basis during the season instead of just seeing the match-ups in the State Championship games. Most likely beneficial to them and their potential opponents. win-win situation for all involved

i remember one year we (bell county) played shelby county during the regular season. the game was delayed due to lightning and when it was all said and done they game ended around midnight. By the time we got packed up, and got back to the high school it was almost 4:00am. lexington is 2 1/2 hours or so by bus and louisville and nky is close to 4. that is a lot of travel for the players.

I have traveled from Shelbyville to Bell County before and it sure is a long ride.

Sheldon Clark did come up to Shelbyville to play Collins last year. I'm sure it was a long ride for them!

When Whitley was 4A back when there was only 4 classes we would have to play GRC, Madison Central, and Montgomery County.
The Madison central trip wasnt to horrible but it was still 2 hours on a bus.
The Montgomery County game was awful to drive to, around three or more hours all together and the last GRC game i went to up there caused me to get home at like 4 in the morning.
I guess its the same reason western ky teams dont travel much, to far and cost to much.
But as far as your statement goes, for the last few years Whitley has played Lex Cath, Shelby Co., Newport, Belfry (which is much farther away then lex), johnson central which is just as bad, and Woodford Co and thats just the teams i can think of off the top of my heads and that doesnt include long playoff trips so as you see, some mountain teams do travel to get the best competetion.

The real question here is ..... Who's going to have the best Hydration engineer in the mountains this year?

How about teams come to the mountains without getting paid to do so.

That kind of travelling would necessitate a Sat. game, overnight stay, and a strong boosters program to pay for it. But it's possible, with a lot of planning. BTW, I recall seeing Breathitt Co. play Beechwood (?) at Highlands in 2002, the year they won the 2A...... and Newport used to have a home/home with Breathitt in basketball.

nky Wrote:The real question here is ..... Who's going to have the best Hydration engineer in the mountains this year?

That question is usually best answered by the fans of the program from northern KY that picks up a star player because it "was in the best interest" of the family to move into that district...

As do WKY teams but it makes more sense for us to go to Nashville, Memphis, Evansville or even St. Louis area due to being closer for deep west teams. There are many series with TN, MO, IL and Indiana teams just as Im sure there are some playing teams in EKY from WVA, TN, OH and VA.
Usually its the stronger teams that seek out distant competition. The more of them you have the more likely you are to see a team travel.

Bell Co traveled to Chattanooga and Marion Co this past year. I think a few years ago to Volunteer High which is outside of Kingsport, TN.
