"Vincent Vega" Wrote:i am all for and wish testing would have been done when i was in high school.I am against it with it only being the people who take part in extra-curricular activities gets tested. If they want to do 60%, fine, do 60, but it should be 60% of every sport, band, choir, and even 60% of the people who dont do any extra stuff at school. And nope, I dont have anything to hide even though I am against it. I got tested, and do get tested for the bus driving.
everyoe should get tested. and it should be a surprise. no warning. and happen at least 3 times a year.
if u test positive then you should get searched, your car should get searched.
i dont understand why people are against this........what is the big deal. got something to hide? i mean this in no way infringes on anyone's rights. people complain about drugs and stuff but when someone tries to take action all you hear is bitchin.
Vincent, you said if people are against it, then they have nothing to hide. How upset would you get if when you come home sometime, you house has been searched, and you find a search warrent laying by the front door? Would you just say to yourself, I didnt have anything to hide, so you dont mind them searching your house? Or would you get all upset over the invasion of your life?

I think that its a really good idea....

You don't like the 60% of extra students only. With how bad drugs are getting in EKY, this is atleast a start to lowering the problem. Can we not go with a start? Anything to lower the drug problem in that area....Hell, that's one of the reasons I wanted to leave Pikeville...to get away from the drugs.
Another topic: What are the penalities if you fail? I know at Pikeville, first fail, as long as you agree to go to Counseling then there is no other penalty. Fail a second time, you are out of extras for a year from the date you failed. Third time...and it's over for you.

Floyd County's policy:
First Violation:
6 week suspension from extra curricular activities.
be assessed for chemical dependency
pass a drug screening (if you fail it is considered your 2nd violation).
Second Violation:
36 week suspension from EC activities (I'm assuming this is based on 4 nine week grading periods).
Complete a chemical dependency program
Pass a drug screening (if you fail this it is considered your 3rd violation).
Third Violation
The student shall be excluded from EC for the remaining of the studen'ts eligibility. in other words- see ya later- you are done.

Another thing to consider, is who is going to be doing the random test? Sometimes coaches may feel a little pressure in keeping there jobs. Lets face it, if you dont win, you dont stay long at one school. Is there going to be police or someone else to oversee the test that are random? If a coach has a all american player on his team, and there number comes up to be tested. Who is to say if that player told the coach they may not pass it, then the coach gets someone else to do it in his place and say it is the one that is supposed to be tested? I know some will say coaches wont do that. But in order for them to say that, they would have to know every coach in the state personally.
The first step in a drug test is to show the person taking it your ID. My son is in high school, but he doesnt have a photo ID. Are they even going to do the test the way it is supposed to be done? They must not if the first step is skipped over. They dont have to be watched while they do there business as long as the room they are doing it in has been checked, and has no running water in it. One teacher or principal or coach is going to have to let the students do there business in there office, (I see them all agreeing to let it be theres) The kids need to be instructed BEFORE they take the test to not let the bottle out of there sight untill the bottle is sealed with the paper strip, and then AFTER it is sealed they need to inital the bottle. Are any instructions being given to them before they take it? And how random is it going to be? Or it will be like this time, they get notice before taking it? Is anyone even worried about the students rights?
Beef, it isnt 60% of the students, that would be a good start. It is just 60% of the students who are involved in extra curricular activities. So in other words, if you dont drive to school, or play in any sports, be in the band, cheerleader or anything, then I guess it is ok if you do drugs according to the school systems.

Personally I think ALL students need to be tested.. No emphasis on just the players, yada yada.. Yes some sports people are using but there are probably more regular students that use than people who actually play sports.. So test everyone, and on the random tests, let a computer or something pick them...
Or if a teacher or someone has a reasonable belief that someone is using then they should notify someone and get that person tested..
Same for the students, if they are suspicious of a teacher.. Now i know this could cause some problems. but it's what needs to be done..
I'm goin to go out on a limb here but i would bet a lot of money that almost 70% of high school kids, use drugs at one point or anohter, whether it be casually, or habitually.. Especially here in EKY. It's everywhere you look..
So IMO.. Test everyone..

Thank you for the post CTD, that is what I think to, test everyone, not just a portion of the school.
11-18-2005, 11:31 PM
The protocol for test is as follows random number will be drawn by the independent testing agency. 2 REPs will come to school each person whose number is selected will be pulled out of class teacher or student by that schools principal then walked directly to the female or male testing site as a group they are not to stop for any reason, if they do it will be declared as an automatic positive. there will be a holding area where a rep from the agency will sit with those to be tested as the others are.
Principals will not be notified all testing will be random with no notice to the BOE or the school itself. Coachs will not be notified of players results from the agency notification will come directly to the Superintendent or his designees.
as far as my rights as a American I am glad that we have freedoms, these students are free not to be tested they just wont be able to participate in sports and other activities. As far as that goes they are held to other standards Studnet athletes have to attend school on the day of a contest and the day after. Fans don't.
Anyone who thinks that all people are treated equal in this country is somewhat foolish.
And Once again I will state it a school has a right under the law to check your bookbag, locker or person. Some schools has medal detectors is this an infringement on your rights. In some counties students who are member of the FFA are allowed to carry pocket knives.
The gestapho has not made a visit to my house as of yet. But I would love to see the cops visit some of my neighbor and even family members.

So basically, it sounds like the state thinks that the students who dont drive to school or do any extras at the schools are the only ones who are not using? Or do they think that those kids are not worth testing? There has to be some reason they dont get tested just the same as everyone else has to.
And yep, the gestepho also was sort of targeting one group of people. But answer, how would you feel if they was to search your house because you post on this site, would you feel ok with it because you have nothing to hide?

to be honest with you it would not bother me one bit if the cops took my computer as long as I got it back.and I have been tested in 3 different jobs that i have held in my life and I never ranted, why because it was a rule just like criminal background checks, or a TB skin test, its part of life my friend. If you fly today things have changed at the airport why saftey.
We don't live in a perfect world, or perfect country but its the greatest one on Earth today.
If you look at history drugs and the downfall of morals have ended many great reigns, our children are our future. i for one enjoy tohe fact that our nation has made some attempts to protect it even from its self. As i said my views changed over time I refused to shop a wal-mart for several years because they bowed down to the moral majority and pulled all the ACDC cds off of their shelves.
Drugs kill people and destroy futures. Your point is moot we are not talking about invading your home we are talking about a simple rule that doesnt affect you or your child, but if he were to be riding on your bus and it was struck by a HIGH ball player or chess club member who hadnt been tested who decided that cruising with a buzz was the cool thing to do then how would you feel then.
If it saves ONE child its worth it. And it doesn't matter who the child is.
Beef you said it best they have to start somewhere.

While I hate the thought of "children" being subjected to random drug testing- I hate even worse the thought of myself or family being subjected to an idiot on drugs (driving).
I heard some schools have told students that PROM is an EC- and that they were required to be part of the EC pool to attend. What about the students who bring dates from other counties or dates no longer in school? How will that be addressed?
I asked previously what the cutoff was for the EC pool- middle school/high school?
I talked to a parent from SF the other day and was told that they dropped down to 1st grade at McDowell- they had to include their twirlers and pee wee dance teams.

Isnt it just a likely that the driver who gets a buzz and decided to drive couldnt do any thing extra in school? Is someone getting hurt or killed going to be what it takes for them to test the WHOLE student body instead of the ones who do the extra stuff?

If it didnt matter WHO the child was. Why are they not checking everyone in the school. I agree that there is a problem with drugs in school. But you talk about the downfalls of reigns in history, I agree with that too. But in history, look at the goverments that tried to discriminate against a certian group of people. Are they still around?
My thoughts are this. I am going to guess that there are roughly 1200 students in Floyd County. If 60% of them are in ECA at school which was mentioned in a earlier post, that is a total of 720, which leaves 480 students that do not do any ECA. So just testing the 720 that do the ECA will wipe out drug use in schools? Or does the board think that the other 480 students that are in the public eye by being on the field, court, chess table, or playing music either dont need to be checked because they are not using, or they just dont care because it wont make headlines if they get busted because they are NOT in the public eye with the school system. You say all the time, if it saves 1 life it is worth it. But the school system dont think the 480 students are worth the time or money to try to save? If you say they do, why are they not being checked?

East Ridge tested around 50 students a few days ago and it wasn't just those involved in EC activities. It was students, drivers, band members, basketball players, etc. Boys and girls alike.
So many names were called in for testing that it disrupted classes for over 3 hours.
I support drug testing anyone. If you are in school then they should have the right to test you. I understand right now they are doing all that they can, 60% is fine by me because it is a start.
At ER we are also forming a UNITE club which is the same as the UNITE Coalition thing against drugs that you have heard about in your community. We are going to raise awareness in younger kids, get people in the community and schools help if needed, etc. etc.
We are working hard to fight the problem that we know exists. A solution always has to start somewhere and we are trying to do just that. Start something and have success with it.

Please tell me you don't actually believe that there are no drug problems in Prestonsburg or Betsy Layne High Schools.
FYI-- heard about an incident at PHS just a few weeks ago- A student with a headache (or similar ailment) was given a "tylenol" by a classmate. An hour or so later he began feeling "strange"- turns out the student was given Oxycontin. The "pusher" was actually laughing about it before he got caught. The "victim" spent the afternoon in an ER being observed in case there were any complications.
Drugs are everywhere. Please don't kid yourself or anyone else. This is a serious problem, not a joke. Drugs are not cool and they are not funny.

I agree WOW i hadnt heard of the incident that is nothing to laugh about.

The reason that it is only EC students is because that is all that the Supreme court has ruled can be tested.
