Solid win for the Bulldogs. Highlands is a tough team if you take them lightly.
I'd like to hear kywldcat01's analysis for this one.

This was a game all about runs.
First quarter Holmes jumped out 9-0 after Rice scored 5 straight. Birds then got on the board but back to back 3's by Rice and Pittman pushed the Holmes lead to 15-2....8 of those points were from junior Kevon Rice. Birds called a timeout and then would go on a 8-1 run to make the score 16-10 Dogs. Both teams traded baskets to close out the first quarter and Holmes led 18-12 after one. Ben Watson would score to cut the lead to 12 again, but back to back 3's by R. Johnson and Hayes would key another 6-0 run and give the Dogs their largest lead of the game at 34-16. Highlands then scored 3 straight but an Elijah Pittman 3 pushed the Dogs lead back to 18 (37-19). Kowlonek, Dill, and Gordon then keyed a 6-0 run to make the score at the half Holmes 37 Highlands 25.
Birds got the ball to start the second quarter and a Ben Watson jumper cut the Holmes lead to 4 at 18-14 but Holmes would go on another run. Back to back 3's by Pittman and J. Johnson and then back to back scores by the Johnson Brothers put Holmes on top 28-14 to cap a 10-0 run.
In the third quarter, Highlands got the ball out of the gate and scored first to cut Holmes lead to 10 at 37-27. Dogs would then hold a 8-12 point lead until the 4:18 mark of the 3rd when the Birds scored 6 straight to cut Holmes lead to 44-38. Like all big time players do though, Ricardo Johnson responded with a 3 to push Holmes' lead back out to 9 at 47-38. Highlands cut the lead to 47-40 behind two Gordon free throws, but an alley oop dunk by Pittman and 3 by Jaydale Herndon at the buzzer would send Holmes in to the 4th up 12 at 52-40.
With Ricardo Johnson on the bench in foul trouble to start the 4th quarter, Elijah Pittman would take over. The senior scored Holmes' next 8 points to help extend their lead out to 16 at 61-45. Pittman would then go to the bench for a breather as Ricardo Johnson re-entered the game and Highlands would go on a 9-0 run to cut the Holmes lead to 61-54 behind 6 points from junior Jack Stewart. Kevon Rice responded for the Dogs with with a big steal and lay in to give Holmes a 63-54 lead. Both teams traded free throws the rest of the game and Holmes leaves Ft. Thomas with a 69-58 win over the Birds.

For Holmes, Elijah Pittman was a man among boys tonight for the Dogs. He did it all, from scoring outside, to driving and scoring off the dribble, to posting up and scoring with his back to the rim. I really believe Elijah is finally playing like the best player in the state and living up to his potential. I said in the predictions thread that he and Ricardo Johnson wouldn't let Holmes lose this game.
Both played extremely well. Despite being in foul trouble, Ricardo managed to score 15 points and hit some clutch free throws down the stretch to keep Holmes lead at double digits.
The X-factor tonight though was junior Kevon Rice. He had 8 of Holmes first 15 points and finished with 13 for the game. Second year in a row he has given the Birds fits.
Holmes team defense and movement of the ball on offense was the key to the W tonight. They moved the ball extremely well against the Birds zone and eventually shot them out of the zone and forced them to defend the bigger, more athletic dogs man to man.
Holmes started slowing the ball down up 16 at 61-45 and this was a big reason for Highlands somewhat making a game of it. Holmes came up empty on a few straight possessions which allowed Highlands to creep back in the game. This easily could've been a 20 point blow out for the Dogs.
Herndon, Hayes, and Avery all played well for Holmes off the bench. Herndon and Hayes both hit a couple big 3's and Avery played outstanding defense.
BTW, for those who said Holmes couldn't score I think you may want to re think that. I tried telling you guys if Henley lets them get out and run, they're more than capable of scoring some points. Holmes has scored 67 or more in 4 of their last 5 games. They have to continue to be consistent with their play though. They can't play well like tonight against a good team and then play down to the level of the competition against a lesser opponent.
All in all, a solid game by the Dogs against a veteran Bluebird squad.

Game story from nky.com:
When the Highlands boys’ basketball staff scouted Holmes in preparation for Friday’s game, it saw an outmanned Ryle team upset the Bulldogs on the strength of a zone defense.
“They kind of got happy shooting jumpers,” said Highlands coach Mike Flynn. “We wanted to limit them off the dribble, so we zoned them. That’s what Ryle did and it worked.
“But they shot that down right away.”
Literally and figuratively.
The defending state champions made a case that the in-region loss was an isolated incident. And if Friday’s 69-58 win at Highlands was any indication, area coaches who thought they’d found a blueprint to beating the Bulldogs might want to go back to the chalkboard.
The victory was Holmes’ fourth straight since losing to Ryle. The victories have come by an average margin of 25 points.
“We’ve been playing like a team that shouldn’t have lost that game – a team that knew it was slacking and has stepped it up,” said Holmes senior forward Elijah Pittman. “We were losing focus of who we are and what we want to be. We were looking at ourselves as last year’s state champions. It’s a new year.”
Highlands, which never led, threatened twice in the second half. Both times Holmes answered.
The Bluebirds cut the lead to 44-38 with 2:47 remaining in the third quarter. But then Holmes senior Ricardo Johnson hit a contested 3-pointer that started an 11-2 run.
“That was the biggest shot of the game,” said Flynn. “That’s the kind of shot that players like him make.”
Pittman picked up where Johnson left off. He caught an alley-oop pass from Jeremiah Johnson for a dunk. Then, after Jaydayle Herndon hit a 3-pointer to end the third quarter scoring, Pittman scored the Bulldogs’ first nine points of the fourth quarter.
Pittman led all scorers with 23 points.
“He’s so long and he’s learning how to post up and score in the post,” said Holmes coach David Henley. “Last year he didn’t know how to score in the post. Now he’s hard to handle one-on-one down there.”
With 2:31 to play, Highlands cut the lead to 61-54 on a Zach Lother 3-pointer, but Holmes closed out the victory at the free throw line.
Henley gave his team’s performance a mixed review.
“We have to get to the point where we’re more consistent, instead of playing well for a spurt here and a spurt there,” he said. “But you have to give Highlands credit too. They have experienced players who know how to execute. You’re not going to blow everybody out.”
Early on, it appeared Holmes would have another blowout victory. The Bulldogs hit eight of their 10 3-pointers in the first half and led by as many as 18 points.
Pittman finished with six rebounds, three blocks and three assists. He also hit three 3-pointers. Ricardo Johnson tallied 15 points to go with five rebounds, three blocks and two assists.
Both teams are scheduled to play at Holmes Saturday night.
Highlands will play Simon Kenton in the first game of a double-header. Holmes will play Warren Central. The game will feature a reunion of Holmes’ 1990 state runner-up team, which Flynn coached.

For those who say I'm a homer when it comes to Ricardo Johnson and Elijah Pittman, check out the following comment from Highlands' coach Mike Flynn after the game:
After the game, Highlands coach Mike Flynn called Pittman “the most talented player in the state. Ricardo (Johnson) is the best player in the state, but Pittman’s the most talented.”
This comes from one of the most established and well respected coaches in the state.

Actually, if you look at Holmes games since the Ryle game, you'll see that they've been playing very well lately.
Sure Dixie gave them a game, but this team is playing extremely well right now. As stated in today's paper, their last 4 wins have come by an average margin of 25 ppg.

Avery did play but he didn't score. I don't remember him taking any shots either though. Avery did however play a lot of minutes and played some very good defense.
Demetrius isn't going to get in the scoring column night in and night out. He is a very unselfish kid and honestly just goes out there and does whatever the coach tells him. He is constantly passing up wide open looks to get his teammates better shots.
I realize people are wondering why he isn't scoring, but it has a lot more to do with him playing unselfish basketball and passing up shots than him simply not playing well. His defense has been outstanding for Holmes this year.

Offensively, Avery has played more of a 3 or 4 this year. He usually comes in for either Slusher or J. Johnson.
Defensively though, he has defended every position from point guard to center. His size (6'3), athleticism, and quickness gives Coach Henley a lot of different options as to how to use him at both ends of the floor.

Considering how good Highlads is, yes, Holmes did dominate them. I believe Holmes is back into their swag. I would guess that the only teams in their class at this stage are Ballard, Scott Co if Guyn is healthy, Trinity when Sewell is on and GRC if they play at their best. Other than that, I don't think their is anyone in the state that can compete with Holmes come showtime, which is February and March. And this is coming from someone who is not a Holmes homer.
