John Wall...Best College Guard since

There were a ton of great college guards. I'm pretty confident that this thread is going to get lost in "great College Guard" to "great College Guard that was a great Pro Guard". If this sticks to just the college game and throws out any discussion of post college, this could be an interesting debate.

As for Wall, he has had maybe the best "First 15 games" of any college freshman guard in history. The last three he has been a mere mortal with not a lot of great highlights.

yea keep it at college...cause alot of great college guards never even played pro
#4
but i gotta say raymond felton is comin to mind

I'm going to give you 3 names. Oscar Robertson, UC. Jerry West, WVU.
And the best and the best of them all, Pistol Pete Marivich, LSU.

I hope you aren't comparing him to these guys. I would venture to say that he's not as good as Jay Williams of Duke was at the college level. And I mean people are saying he's better then Derek Rose, thats even a little premature considering Memphis went undefeated that year and was National Runner-ups.

The 3 players I named are the best that I've seen play in college. I wasn't comparing Wall to any of the 3, that would be a basketball sin. Wall will be a 1 and done so you can't put these guys that leave after one year in the same catagory as a 3 or 4 year player.
If you want to compare who the best 1 and done guards that is an entirely different story.

 Yes, he does not compare with these guys. What I don't know is the records and stats for their teams in their Freshman years. I'm doubtful that Freshman were elligible when the Big O and West played. Not sure about Pete.

And then that is not even a fair comparison because guys were not even leaving straight for the NBA as a common practice until the 80's. Magic leaving after his Sophomore year was consider such a rarity of it's time.

To make this a valid comparison, you can only make the Comparison of Wall to players who played their legit Freshman year and never came back.

Dwyane Wade

Wade is the latest to come to mind in my eyes, too. Some great ones that were early outs are Allen Iverson, Stephon Marbury, and recently Derrick Rose.

To the poster who said Wall has looked to be a mere mortal his last 3 games, I agree 100%. To be honest, until he starts hitting jumpers more consistently his draft stock could also be plummeting.

I kind of thought a few UK die hards would say he is the best thing since sliced bread, and compare him to MJ or Pistol Pete or the best guard I can remember watching in the SEC, Chris Jackson of LSU. He's not there yet, but it seems like he has a very good work ethic and will do what it takes to become a better player. Right now, I'll settle for what he's doing. Making clutch free throws at the end of the game, pushing the ball at all times, and making exciting plays we haven't seen from UK guards in quite sometime. A few less turnovers and a consistent jumper would be nice though.

One thing you got to look at though when your comparing John Wall to people like pistol pete and other old school players is the level of competition.

Back then the competition wasnt as good as it is now. If John Wall was playing back when some of "the best" guards were I think he would be more dominant because overall the competition is better now then when the others played so that makes it harder to stand out now then it would have been 25-30 years ago. JMO.

yes. I think that he will impact high school basketball players for years to come. Young kids need to see what an outstanding point guard looks like.

Marbury
#17
Chris Paul
#18
He's kinda like an athletic Jameer Nelson.

When John Wall is on, he reminds me of a smaller LeBron James.

Flynns probably stronger and better shooter..Same explosiveness...Wall is probably a lil quicker and decision maker. :Cheerlead:Cheerlead [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHY4vduNoRo"]YouTube- Jonny Flynn Dunks on Rutgers![/ame]
