Paul Laurence Dunbar has hired a new football coach: Bob Lawson, who has been the defensive coordinator at Class 6A Henderson County the last three years.
Lawson, 30, is from Whitley County and played college football at the University of the Cumberlands. He was also an assistant coach there for four years before leaving to go to Pelham (Ala.) High School, where he was an assistant to former Elizabethtown coach Brett Burnett.
âThe thing that really interested me in Dunbar is that it is so good academically, and thatâs going to carry over to athletics,â Lawson said. âI think itâs a high-potential place where academics and athletics can go right together.â
Dunbar has fallen on hard times in football in recent years. The Bulldogs went 3-19 the last two years under Jason Howell. They have a 7-36 record over the last four years, and havenât had a winning season since 2005.
Lawson said the key to getting Dunbar back on the winning track âis that a lot of things have to get in place. Iâve got to get in the school and recruit the athletes there, and get the athletes who are already playing football to get on my plan and start working and preparing to be a good team.â
Lawson said he has a rapport with young people. âI think I have a lot of energy, and I think I have a great connection with kids.â
While football is important to Lawson, he said he doesnât âbase my life around football. Being the best person I can be and the best influence I can be, thatâs whatâs most important to me.â
Lawson will be making regular trips from Henderson to Lexington the next few months to get his players working in the weight room, and to run spring practice.
Lawsonâs wife Sarah is also from Williamsburg.
Lawson will be Dunbarâs fifth coach in the last 10 years. He replaces Howell (2008-09). Before Howell, the Bulldogs were coached by David Hensley (2005-07), Fred Barnott (2003-04), Mark Peach (2001-02) and Mike Meighan (1990-2000).

You must consider when Clevinger and Lawson took over at Henderson 3 years ago the program was in complete disarray from the Duffey's and the death of a player.
I think this is a good hire for Dunbar. I'm not sure if it is a good job for Lawson. 5 coaches in 10 years smells of a coaching graveyard.

did Clevinger and Lawson both Take Over Henderson County at the same time???
i believe this is a good hire for Dunbar. if he get the players and win games then if Dunbar is smart then they will keep him, if he does good and they still let him go then they need a whole new administration.

I agree it's a good hire, but I doubt he'll be there very long. If he's a good coach then it'll be a good relationship because he'll be there long enough to get it in the right direction and then he'll go somewhere else. If I sound pessimistic, I don't mean to, just looking the bouncing around he's done in the past.

Great hire! I think the fact that he has had previous experience at different programs will be a plus insted of a negative. All programs he left said they wished they had him back. Congrats coach!

Having seen the workouts he has began to do with the players, i beleive he is indeed a great coach and seems to be a good hire

As a player for him in his last year at county, I know how great of a coach they got. I have all the respect in the world for him and hope he does great, but he will be deeply missed here too.
