Paducah Tilghman 21 Somerset 0 (3A State Championship)
#1
Sloppy game from both sides, I believe almost 10 Turnovers, Somerset's QB had 3 INTs. Paducah's D shut out somerset, this was moslty a defensive battle, but Paducah comes out on top. Good Job and Great Seasons to both teams.

Final Score
PT-21(9-6)
SS-0(14-1)

Congrats PT. Congrats Somerset, but a hard way to nd a great season, laying an egg in the biggest game. 3A is just terrible in 2009, thank goodness it is over.

I cant wait for the Trinity-St. X game tonight Smile

As I've stated all year....3A is and was simply horrible. Team with 6 losses is your champ......

This should finally put it to rest.....
#5
congrats to tilman, told everyone your defense was tuff and fast
#6
I say anyone who could beat central would be champs and it held true.

Central played the big 6a dogs all season long.
#7
Really surprising loss to me, snowy, sloppy field must have contributed to play and interceptions, but it was the same field for both teams, just surprising to me.

Congrats PT

Paducah Tilghman won its third state football title Saturday afternoon by beating turnover-plagued Somerset 21-0 in the Class 3A finals at WKU’s L.T. Smith Stadium.

Tilghman, which won championships in 1973 and ‘85, led 7-0 at halftime thanks to D’Shon Jackson’s 28-yard interception return for a TD. Somerset had 6 turnovers in the first half, including four interceptions.http://fieldsnotes.bloginky.com/2009/12/...-tilghman/

Tilghman controlled the second half, with Kris Jackson throwing a 48-yard TD pass to Jadarion Harmon and running for a 31-yard TD.

The Blue Tornado was outstanding in blanking Somerset, which brought a 14-0 record into the finals. Tilghman forced 7 turnovers and limited the Briar Jumpers to 156 total yards. Javarious Hodge and Bobby Caldwell led the winners in tackles. D’Shon Jackson had two fumble recoveries to go with his interception return. Josh Forrest also had 2 picks for the Tornado.

The championship completed a remarkable turnaround for Tilghman, which was 2-6 in mid-October before winning its last 7 games under Coach Randy Wyatt.

AAA was very good, because you had 8 teams capable of winning the title

Don't forget to throw in the "A" team that beat us, plus all the other schools too. Doesn't matter. This is not the same team that lost those games. This is the team that won 6 straight. Somerset had not faced this kind of speed all year. Speed forces turnovers. Tilghman did not play particularly well offensively, but played well enough to win. We lose 2 on O and three on D.

Wow, good luck next season

Congrats to Paducah Tilghman. You played a great game defensively today and had a remarkable turnaround.

I'd also like to congratulate my Briar Jumpers on a very special season. I know it hurts right now but you've made us all proud. I know I've got a son that's hearbroken right now but hopefully he and his teammates will work that much harder to have a chance to get back there next year........Again great game Blue Tornado, hopefully we can hook up again.

Turnovers kill, but the speed wasn't the cause of most of the turnovers, just careless mistakes. Somerset had not seen that kind of speed all year, Tilghman had less turnovers and came away with the win.

Somerset also had classy fans and I enjoyed talking with several of them after the game. I know they were disappointed but they were very cordial. PT is a very unpolished team, lots of flaws and mistakes and quite frankly, their play at times has been just awful. It would be hard for anyone to take them seriously with their record. But if they come to play, it can be interesting. PT scouting decided early on that Somerset's D was too tough up the middle. And PT knew they would key on Deray Edmunds. But I think they were also surprised by the speed on Somerset's corners which shut down a lot of the outside game. Tilghman's D controlled the line and the secondary. Thirteen kids quit this team. Two more lost to injuries. It was a dream that came true.

Do you know what they call the team that wins the "weakest" class?

State Champions...........

Paducah Tilghman and Somerset deserve congratulations for accomplishing what they did this season, it doesn't matter what you think of the class as a whole. Both teams have a lot coming back next season so all those teams that were "down" this season may be looking up at them again.

I thought Tilghmans's secondary was outstanding. The interception on the long pass heading towards the closed end of the stadium was just a great play by PT's safety. Somerset's quarterback was playing with a sprained ankle and I think it was hurting him more than he would let on. Several times when he tried to step into a throw the ball came out fluttering and high. Usually when he misses its low and hard. Against a secondary with the speed and skill of the Blue Tornadoes that spelled disaster. Also he wasn't able to scramble enough to keep plays alive for his receivers to get open--again credit goes to PTs speed on defense. This was a game where Somerset was good enough to win, especially on defense but the way Tilghman was playing and speed the Jumpers margin for error was small.

My son was #55, he's a sophmore and had to play the rest of the game after #77 went out with and ankle injury early. He held his own but said that your defensive line (he mainly went up against #55 and #27) was the best he had faced all season. He was also very complimentary of your players and wanted me to offer congratulations--but he did say he hopes to see you guys again there next year to get another shot at it, lol. Again congrats on a remarkable story.

^ I agree. Congrats PT on a great season. I'm proud of our boys in how they handled victory and defeat this year. This is a great group of kids and we loose some great leaders from the senior class.

Great run for Somerset this season.
#21
PT made this Mayfieldian proud, way to go Big Blue. Next year will be exciting, PT returns a ton and I have to wonder if this might be the start of repeat or maybe a 3peat for PT. WKY football will be good next year as LO and Mayfield aslo return most of their teams.
#22
Not the best offensive game but both teams played very hard. A great year for Somerset ended just a little short. PT was very good defensively. #8 was outstanding, covers a lot of ground in the secondary and has great hands.
#23
First off I would like to congratulate PT, you guys played your butts off yesterday and didn't let any turnovers get you down. You guys fought hard to get there and you deserve your title.

That being said, probably the worst high school football game I've ever seen. I think there were 8 turnovers in the first half, something like 11 or 12 for the game. I seriously want to know if this is a record for turnovers in a state championship game. Neither team executed very well in the first half, but PT was able to in the second half where Somerset couldn't which turned out to be the dagger. This was the worst game Somerset has played all year by far. No one could catch the ball, there were several passes that could have gone for touchdowns but the receivers just couldn't make the open grab. The running backs were running the ball well and running hard but just couldn't hold on to the ball. You can not commit turnovers and expect to win especially against a fast team. Defense for Somerset played excellent until the end of the game when their frustration kicked in. Again I am not trying to take anything away from PT they made the plays they needed to to win the game.

Jumpers, don't get down on yourselves. I know this is going to be tough because you guys were much better than you showed on Saturday but that's the way the game goes sometimes. You had a much better season than anyone expected of you and you have nothing to be down about. Sometimes things just don't go your way in football and it happens, I'm sorry that it had to happen in the biggest game of the year but that is life. Congratulations to all the seniors you guys played your butts off for the Purple and Gold and we are proud of you!!!

Actually it was a great day for football. No snow, a little windy and chilly but sunshine and around 35 degrees. East KY got the snow none out West.

#8 was a heck of a player to see in person.

Yes, the sun was out it was a nice day, but very cold.
#28
Got really cold during the 1A game as the sun went down.

I beat it was real cold especially for Somerset. The outcome didn't really surprise me but being shutout was a total surprise.

Add to that the home side where Somerset fans were was in the shade.
