So now because they're poverty stricken schools, they don't have good programs? I beg to differ. Look at Bellevue and Holmes this past year. Bellevue is currently in the 1A region finals and Holmes just finished their season 9-3. Holmes also won the state championship this past year in basketball. Don't tell me these schools don't have motivated athletes like a Highlands, St. X, or Trinity.
I find it hilarious that you folks use this argument for football, but not for basketball or baseball.
I never once said that mountain schools didn't have success against the other schools around the state. I simply implied that overall eky/mountain teams have historically struggled against teams from nky.
If it wasn't for Highlands EKY would have a few more state championships. So i don't think EKY schools struggle with the might NKY teams. But Highlands has ended quite a few seasons for us. Thats respectable to me. They are one of the top football programs in the state if not the top. However i always loved Wrestling NKY teams and Lexington teams for that matter. They didn't seem to have the same fight in them. You go against these hillbillies here in EKY and WV and you know your in a fight.

You do realize that the first two sentences are a contradiction, don't you?
As I've posted many times before, the notion that School A has kept us from winning a lot more state titles is a terrible excuse. It means that School A, who is in the same class with me, has beaten me and proven they are the best team. Therefore I am not "entitled" to anymore state titles than those I have earned. :please:
Rockastle might have 2 state titles if not for Boyle.
Hopkinsville might have 2 state titles if not for Boyle.
Mayfield could very well have 4 more if not for Danville.
NCC could have 2 more if not for the Ads.
Get my drift?

No they are not contradicting. I'm saying that NKY schools in general are not any better than EKY schools. However Highlands is better than any school in Ky outside of Trinity every year. That means that they are the exception. Outside of them i do not believe NKY schools are that great.

Highlands also benefits from open enrollment which is an advantage. Lexingtons schools do not.

They do NOT have open enrollment. They are an independent city school district like dozens of others in Kentucky. The school district will allow tuition students (paying their own way) but the last football player that I remember doing this graduated about 10 years ago. He attended Highlands because the school system he went K-8 through, did not have a high school football team.

No, Boone has never won.
To the best of my recollection, the NKY schools who have won titles are Highlands, Beechwood, CovCath, Conner, Lloyd, Bellevue, Dayton, NewCath and Ludlow. If I've forgotten someone, my apologies.

I understand the pride, love and heritage. But as long as that is your focus, your teams will be staying home after the regionals. The last time I looked, no state championship trophy is awarded to the best anything in the mountains. I know the top teams outside of the mountains are proud to be their areas best, but they could care less about that come playoff time.

I think you've stumbled across one of the main reasons I started this thread. I've never seen this kind of regionalism in the other parts of the state. The term "Mountains" is used and I even find some define and redefine those boundaries to suit their purpose. Once I was told Ashland and Russell weren't Mountain teams and then told another time they were. Somerset is a Mountain team because they're in some TV coverage area but let's get real, I haven't seen anything other than a lake community with Somerset which is far from the typical idea of "Mountain football."
I just think the focus is so much on Regional accomplishment because statewide accomplishment (except for a few programs) is limited at the least.

Regional accomplishments, Please. If I do recall Breathitt, Bell, Belfry, Pikeville, Ashland, and Corbin have two or more state championships.

Plus the allure of a team full of country boys beating the teams from the big cities (which is where the vast majority of these state championships the other areas have come from) Unites the mountain folk. Look at it this way Paintsville and johnson Central are huge rivals But if central brings in someone from out of the mountains and we dont have a home game, you will see a huge amount of tiger fans there to support the eagles. The saying around here goes "We hate each other, But we hate everybody else a whole lot more"

In the last 50 years of playoff competition in KHSAA:
Breathitt: 3 Titles
Bell: 2 Titles
Belfry: 2 Titles
Pikeville: 3 Titles
Ashland: 1 title (BTW, I thought Ashland wasn't the Mountains if Russell isn't?)
Corbin: 3 Titles
Over 50 years.
Central Kentucky alone as Region surpasses that:
Boyle: 5 Titles
Danville: 10 Titles
Henry Clay: 1 Title
Tates Creek: 1 Title
George Rogers Clark: 1 Title
Mercer: 1 Title
Paris: 2 Titles
I would say CKY might be the weakest region in state titles (Unless you stretch it out to say Bardstown). Yet those schools have posted more State Crowns (21) than the Mountain Region (14) and with more schools involved.
I don't see threads stating: Whose the best in Central KY? Top 10 teams of the decade in CKY.
That's my point.

Take the teams that come from out of Boyle Co. out of the equation and it gets pretty thin, huh? If my math is right , I come up with a total of 6.

What good does it do? Do we punish the programs that have won them because they're in the same county?
Danville won theirs from 1962 to 2003. That's a pretty spread out margin.
Why not take out the one's that are one in a string?
So eliminate Boyle's 5 straight.
Oh, so then we would need to take out Pikeville's 3 straight, Belfry's 2 straight and Corbin won all three from '76 to '82. That's a short time and haven't won it since.
:please:
BTW, I forgot Middlesboro who has 1 I think.
Add Lex Cath and that gives CKY 23.

I did a little research and here's what i've come up with on the subject of mountain teams and state titles.... and offical state title didn't start till 1975 but records of champions date a few years before that
I could be wrong about this school, lynch east main, but i think i was told at one point that before they consolidated they would be a mountain team, and of course i dont know everything about every school in such that im going to list so please feel free to call me out on things i am wrong about or if i inculde someone who isnt a mountain team, and I am going to list the years a mountain team have won without who they played just because this would take forever and a coons age to type if i didnt, but I will put the years mountains teams have been runner-up at state and who they were beaten by and the score

The playoffs began in 1959. There were 3 classes. I think where you are getting the '75 date is that was when they went to 4 classes.
So the only "mythical" champions were prior to 1959. Hence I used the mark of "50 years."
BTW, Eastern is Louisville Eastern.
