Checking in: Shelby Valley
#1
From Jody Demlng's blog;

There will be plenty of chances to see University of Louisville walk-on Elisha Justice and his teammates across the state this season.

Justice is the leader of the team that has won two of the past three 15th Region titles and is favored to win its sixth regional crown since 2002.

Senior Ashley Hatfield also has over 1,000 career points and Tyler and Tyler Newsome and Cody Varner are the other top players for the Wildcats.

Fans in the Louisville area can get a peek at the Wildcats on Nov. 21 when Shelby Valley faces Jeffersontown in the PRP scrimmage.

On Dec. 12, Shelby Valley will play Miller Grove (Ga.) at the East Kentucky Expo Center before heading to the Kingdom of the Sun event in Ocala, Fla., Dec. 28-31.

After the holidays, the Wildcats will participate in the WYMT Tournament Jan. 5-9 at Knott County Central and then the All "A" Classic. The small school state tournament will be Jan. 27-31 at Eastern Kentucky University.

Several other key regular-season games: the Wildcats will host Christian County (Jan. 22), North Laurel (Feb. 6) and travel to Perry County Central (Feb. 19).

Thanks for the information, can hardly wait to see how the team meshes with the loss of their post players of last season and the new transfer. Taylor Newsome will have to pull a heavy load under the basket and his teammates will have to help out. Hatfield will probably have to play some center sometimes.

I heard they were playing Jeffersontown tonite.

They were playing in Louisville, but not a Louisville team. Just got confirmation that the Varsity won. Don't know about the JV or the score. Sorry.

Any more details?

We did play Iroquois and we beat them like 20 points i believe. And our JV got beat by 6 points. The JV lead the entire game and ended up getting beat at the end...

they beat Iroquois, a Louisville team, by 18 I believe. Were up 21 when starters when out. Justice wowed the crowed multiple times. Shelby Valley didnt play great at first and got down 14-3 but came back put it away hard.

How did Valley handle Donovan Gibbs?
#14
Gibbs was definitely Iroqouis biggest strength, but Valley handled him well. He scored a lot, but majority of his points came from the free throw line, where he only missed one I think. He was probably 12 of 13 from the line. Lots of fouls were called in this game, Justice and Hatfield and maybe one of two others would have fouled out, but bc it was a scrimmaged the rule was not enforced

Gibbs looked really good, about 6'7 and fairly strong. Had a good handle and pretty good form, but the team did not focus on him enough. Too much guard play by Iroquois. Justice wore those kids out, made more than one fall over with his handle. Even the Iroquois fans were 'ohh'ing and 'ahh'ing. When Gibbs had the ball, he usually got fouled or occassionally got a decent look, but Valley did deny him the ball a lot too.

No one else really impressed me on Iroquois though. Gibbs had great potential in college, but Justice is currently the better ball player. I would say Shelby Valley did not play that great of a game, and still got a big win. They started off slow, and even in the second half Iroquois had cut the lead to one point.

I would chalk the sloppiness up to experience right now, Varney and Ramey both played good but could still feel the nerves coming into play maybe. Justice played great. Tyler Newsome I thought played very well, had some great passes and hit some big shots, even took one up and under over Gibbs for an 'and one'. He may have forced a shot or two. Hatfield was up and down, made some big shots as well and looked great when he did, but other times he forced a shot and often he went in for a contested shot when he had teammates open for a better look. When his head is in the game hes looks great though. Taylor played well, battling on the board as usual. Put a lot of shots in from close.

When subs other than the top 6 came in, there was a big drop-off in what they could do offensively. Also, another problem seemed to be the press. The front three gambled every single time on the press, trying to double team and force a turnover. RARELY, if ever, worked. Most of the time Iroquois would get the ball past the front three quickly and it would be a 3 on 2 situation in favor of the other team, with Valley's three guys trailing and trying to catch up to the action.

All in all, still says a lot for a team not to play anywhere near their best and still beat a team with a 6'7 D1 prospect by around 20.

I knew the team was not Jefferstown, and it was a weird name, so I was not aware it was a Louisville team.

Seminole, Cherokee, Arapaho, Sioux and Pueblo. Do they sound weird? The Native American groups today would like to sit down and talk to you.

I guess I should have said that it was an name that was hard for me to remember. but it didn't dawn on me that it was an American Native name, because I didn't know the correct pronunciation of it. My sincere apology to anyone who was offended by this. When my father was stationed in Ft. Carson Colorado, in nearby Pueblo, my parents were friends with the chief and we spent many times going to the reservation. I also have a friend who is a trainer for the Florida State Seminoles. We went to high school school together. So I have no problems with people of any ethnic background. I wasn't raised that way.
I hope that clears this up?
